try reading Eiji Yoshikawa's books. I don't know the titles in english... the most known is about Myamoto Musashi's life (early 1600, but life don't really change.. medieval times in japan end in 1868) ; another one is about Kyomori No Heike (aka Taira No Kyomori).
i think it's the kind of books you want to read...

As was said Eiji Yoshikawa wrote good books.

I would highly reccomend his Shin Heike Monogatari. Yes, this one has been translated into English. Its translation is called The Heike Story. :) Eiji Yoshikawa is a more modern writer (The book was written about 50 years ago).

This is a novel based on the Heike Monogatari, an ancient story of Japan that is very popular. Surely you can find an English translation of this too. Probably you should look for book with title The Tale of Heike, the translation of Japanese title. This book is from the years after the fall of the Heike.

These stories are about the Heike clan and the Gempei Wars, which were in early 1100's years. There are samurai in these stories. In fact, it was at this time that samurai became important. Before, they were less so important. They were called by the nobles of the Imperial Court to defend them from enemies such as the warrior monks. The samurai soon became very influential and powerful.

Another good Japanese book from the Heian Era would be Genji Monogatari. It was written by Shikibu Murasaki, a courtlady living at that time. Probably there would be an English translation of it. However, this is not a tale of samurai, but of courtlife of nobles in Heian. This story was written at about the time it takes place. :D

I hope this helped. :)

Aren't there also a number of mangas of the period? If so, which one would be the one to be recommended in terms of seriousness and historicity?

i could only recommend the OAV of Rurouni Kenshin. The mangas are crap (silly humour), but the OAV is really really good (dark, sad etc)

Yes I am very interested in magnas too. Are there any good (translated in English or in Greek :D ) with a mythical or historical backround? Does anyone knows a good site to buy translated in English good mangas?

I searched at Amazon for Shin Heike Monogatari and the reviewers said that the story was fabulus but the translation was very poor (ex. sake=wine). Have anyone read the English translation? If yes, is it worth it?

Thank you again.

rurouni kenshin (the OAV) is during the early meiji era, when conservatives samurai tried to stop the reforms. really interesting...

but it's the only one i know during an intersting period. all the other are a mix of fantasy-history set during the sengoku jidai... at least for those translated in french...

another manga with an histroical background is (in french, i don't know the english titles); "le tombeau des lucioles". the story o a young lad who see his sister starve to death right after the WW2... one of the saddest movie i've seen...

In middle school all english students had to read "Samurai Sword", which was historical fiction. I don't know if it was translated from Japanese or not however.
