I am reading a book on how Japan invaded its neighboring countries for their resources during WW2 and it really interested me in playing as them. The problem is, I’ve never played as the Japanese empire before, and the reason is that I don’t know how to play es them. Do any of you have any strats that are particularly useful or tips that help?

How good is your grasp of game mechanics per se?
I would also point you to the wiki and the Interservice rivalry, second sino japanese war and London naval treaty Pages, which deal with mechanics concerning Japan (and written by yours truly).
Also, play the historical path!

Well I have 600 hours on the game and I know the game mechanics pretty well. I just want to know what specific strats worked well for you and base my gameplay on that.

OK. Quite important is to plan for 1: the war in China and 2: the pacific war.
This ties into Interservice rivalry (IR): you first pick an army focus like prioritize steel for guns (because you pretty much need 4 Mic badly) or indiscriminate conscription (for the manpower). This has you then at "army strengthened", giving additional boni for land forces.
You Pick the "purge the kodoha" path, maybe one or two foci from the army branch or manchuria branch and hit china in mir 1937. The buildup requires some army XP to get better templates. Also, GBP doctrine should be a priority from the get go.
Good source for XP and doctrine Research bonus is the border conflict with ussr, pick your six best/strongest divisions, park them in north korea at the soviet border, start a border war and escalate within 30 days. You should win and get XP and a doctrine bonus.

The 2nd SJW uses a set of debuffs (because of Marco Polo bridge incident) that you can get rid of by paying 50 PP every month (?) - do this. The debuffs are significant and China has a much harder time getting rid of theirs. Use a lot of naval invasions, with carrier air support to get the upper hand. Concentrate on industry heavy coast states. Chinas Equipment is outdated, so you can get by with quantity in production and build your economy while fighting.

I think you must focus on rifles, arty and logistics, you will need to launch some amphibious assault, first in Qingdao, then Shangai and so on wave after wave, taking more coastal land, you will need this if you want to avoid attrition, I started almost my amphibious assaults with 20w marines and 14+6 infantry, when port is secured, I sent Manchu or 10w infantry to seize land.

Good luck commander

Ok thanks I’ll try that.

You can try the "no navy" strat :D Spamming TAC, HF, DDs with depth charges, M.armor, motorized and marines, with a few infantry divisions thrown in. Then you goal is to capture Soviet and middle eastern oil fields, invade Britain and then mop up pacific and invade central America for a firm position to invade US from. Just make sure you have enough DDs and TACs to get rid of US subs, those are very annoying.
For SJW, beeline for it, since the earlier you start, the worst state of Chinese army will be, and you have air power, to make things easy for you,
