I am working very hard now to do a semi-historical Japan where Hirohito does everything right and actually wins the war.
But, I cant stand the fact that when you do the border conflict with the soviets you get a random general to do the fighting, and its almost everytime a lvl 1 general and I get destroyed. Since Japan instigates the attack, I should be allowed to choose what general is to handle the battle.

I want my Land Doctrine boost!

Thanks.

It's not about general, really (Soviets also get a random one), it's about:
- reinforce rate
- great purge
- division templates
- planning bonus
(roughly in that order)

I assure you it is perfectly possible to win the border war. It is not trivial, but if you put strong units, you can win.

I don't know if anyone has this. But playing as the Soviets, the Japanese started the border war and then after it was running for a few days they would just give up on it. I reloaded and the same. They refused to fight to the end and lost, even when I assigned inferior units that should lose... a wierd bug? Anyone else saw this?

Sad because I was hoping for an epic battle.

There's a time limit to it. If no one wins, it ends in a draw.
As for epic battle - it's, again, on Japan to escalate it.

Not just the planning bonus, but you can also add extra effort for attack or defense. Back with 1.5 I was getting rather good with that mechanic, and t ensure the right units were picked, I made sure I had nothing else to be picked. If you only have the maximum of 6 units and only one general, then the program only has that to pick from. It was when I got too worried about my borders to leave them empty that I started having inconclusive battles as the program would pick whatever was near. I recall that if it was in any state bordering the one you were attacking, units could be drawn in [as would their generals].
