Hello, I'm new to Victoria2, and I've been having a blast with this game. Started as Belgium, the USA, then Prussia, now getting a little more adventurous and going with Japan. After a decade or so into the game, I've noticed a few problems in playing Japan, and I'd like the forum's advice on how to solve them.

1. Lack of naval supplies: With the westernization by conquest mechanic in place it makes sense to invade other countries to get Western reforms faster. The problem? You're on an island with 1 ship, and usually not even enough supplies to take care of that. After 1838 there is a chronic lack of clippers that usually persists until like the 1850's, which is a problem if you're trying to get off an island. I've found the only way to counteract this, is to conquer somewhere ASAP. I build 3 more clippers with what I have in stock, build 4 irregular infantry, and justify war from day 1, usually with either Borneo or Jahore. And then I ush my troops there, rush my ships back and let them rest in port attritioning to 5% health, and accept the fact that the 12,000 irregulars sent to conquer Johore/Borneo will likely be staying there as colonial guards in the near future

2. Infamy limit: The first time I played Japan, I tried justifying war against Korea after conquering both Jahore and Borneo, but that got me over the infamy limit and Korea and the Netherlands promptly declared a war of containment on me. The problem is that conquest costs so much infamy to do. Conquering two countries seems to be about the limit. Does simply humiliating nations give research, or do I have to take land?

3. A lack of allies: The only ally I found as Japan was China. That's it. When I'm an unciv, none of the GPs want to ally me, and by the time I westernize, I have so much infamy no one wants to ally me, and I became a GP quickly, and I was te odd man out. Everyone except the US had GP allies, and the US wasn't interested. The problem is that the Dutch eye Jahore and Borneo hungrily, and I'm worried about the UK eventually trying to eat my soul.

1) You'll have low supplies and a poor military until you Westernize. Luckily, so will everyone else! If it really boils down to it you can just transport your units one at a time from Japan to Korea (definitely the place I would suggest conquering first rather than Johore or Borneo) but the much easier route would be to ally China/Manchuria and let them do all the work for you. REMEMBER that you need one (preferably more) of one military the reforms that gives RP from conquest (I suggest Imported Weapons as this will also allow you to recruit infantry) before you do this, otherwise you're just wasting potential RP. Once you've got Korea you may be able to raise a slightly bigger military. Still, I would suggest you stick to Chinese neighbours so that they can kill them for you. Keep naval stockpile at 100% so that clippers are bought quicker, and get Imported Ships if possible.

2) Not a lot you can do about this. Just wait for it to go down to a reasonable level before you start another war, since going over the limit will have.. poor consequences.

3) You'll only ever get 1 GP ally, most likely the US. Keep your infamy under the limit and increase your relations with the GPs. You'll need the GP allies since Korea doesn't like being conquered and will start a crisis every 5 f*cking years.

You should be able to Westernize around 1860, so with some focused research and perhaps some annexation in the Arabian peninsula you can even do some colonization.

Actually, if you are trying to build new clippers, shouldn't you set your stockpile as low as possible? That way the clipper convoys you purchase will go toward the new ships, and not toward maintenance on your existing ships (which are all going to go down to 5% health anyway, so no point in trying to maintain them).

I was thinking more along the lines of he'll want the ships as quick as possible, but with a low naval stockpile they'll be bought slowly. Idk.

I'm no expert, but I think your construction slider will determine how quickly they are bought. So max out the construction slider, but set your naval stockpile low, if you want to build new clippers. That's how it was explained to me, anyway, and I've always been able to build 8 or so clippers as Japan. Also helps to queue them up first thing in 1836.

You're probably right, tbh. I always keep construction at 100% so that's probably why I ever noticed.
