I love the comment when you get one of those: "We are doomed!" :D

Did I mention, that for some reason after depleting almost my entire manpower, Sweden declared war on me? And is in an alliance with Lithuania, Poland, and Bohemia?

This is going to be an ultra-difficult war (at least for me), where I'll have to be extremely careful where to fight my battles and to use my cold climate to ruin my opponents lust for war. Soldiers really don't like it when their little Fritz falls off due to freezing...

But that borders on thread-jacking and doesn't belong here.

Now I want to see hordes of Samurai taking over the Pacific Rim (and especially the Americas)!

Sakoku at last! (And appalling American geography on the Paradox RNG's part!)

P.S. Why did you protectorate the DPRKM (Democratic People's Republic of Korean Manchuria) instead of taking 3 provinces and leaving Pyongyang isolated and surrounded by a closed country? Vassalising I can understand, but protectorising?

I couldn't vassalize, sadly. I was under the foolish impression at the time (despite the fact I already had experienced this) that protectorates became vassals after Westernization. I was clearly mistaken. I'l just attack them later. :)

It isn't an official update unless Japan loses some ships. :p

Truer words have, sadly, never been spoken.

3/3/3 mediocre? I'd love that!

Currently my Muscovy has a 0/0/0 ruler who just won't die at the front lines. :( And his heir is one year old and not much better...

I love the comment when you get one of those: "We are doomed!" :D

Wow. You have my commiserations. (And now, I'll probably inevitably get one.)

This AAR does really show off some really good writing skills and I like the way you comment your actions! Subscribed, of course.

Thanks so much!

See, that's what happens when you presume to gain some naval competence. There's only one thing to do: start a seemingly endless war of attrition and drive your war exhaustion to previously unseen heights.

My ultimate goal is to get my entire army to toss its cookies, per the scene in Miracle. They will run back and forth for hours a day!

Yeah, ships sinking, that's what I like to see!

I thought I was unfortunate with a 0/2/0 regency for a one year old with a 0/0/1... At least we now have the ability to send poor heirs to the front lines. Paradox, encouraging us to recklessly endanger incompetent sons!

It is in the finest traditions of history, since can't send them off to the church.

NORTH COREA IS BEST COREA!

Especially when protected by Avindian, our Glorious Leader!

:D If I were the Dear Leader, I would probably do a better job, but doing a worse job would be pretty difficult.

I'm sure the non-europeans always benefit and get free cookies when they border Europeans.

I've read in a book somewhere.

I want you to know that this comment and the next few made me very hungry.

Just invent the internet a couple of centuries early. that way everyone gets cookies, whether they want them or not :D

I'd also have to invent electricity, computers, and a number of other technologies early. Sadly, I do not think EUIV has "Future Tech."

How about an overview map of the New World? Oh and a map of Europe of course, I'd like to see how the Purple Blob is doing. :)

Those are already scheduled!

Best use of cookies ever:

And then deep fry it! It's an American tradition to deep fry things normal humans have no business deep frying.

When I saw "Pacific Rim," I immediately thought of the movie, which I haven't seen yet, except for trailers. If I can't invent the Internet, I would have to caution you to restrain your expectations for giant robots.

I object. Pizookie is in fact the best use of cookies ever.

I'm afraid to click on that link.

I'd like to see the list of current wars and the coalition page, get an idea as to who is fighting, if anyone is expanding aggressively etc. Obviously if there are no major coalitions or wars, then no point.

Great idea! I really do need mess around with the ledger more.

Does anybody know how to do a world map screenshot with EUIV? F12 and Shift + F12 don't seem to work anymore. (Shift + F12 actually seems to make EUIV freeze.)

Should have the update up tomorrow evening. Keep an eye out for it! (Possibly two.)

They both still work. However, Steam has it's own screenshot function on F12 by default, so Steam (as the parent process) eats the keypress, takes a regular screenshot and continues. To take map screenshots, either rebind Steam's screenshot funtion in their Settings, or launch EU4 w/o Steam. ((Yes, contrary to popular belief, Steam isn't carrying a DRM by default.))

I'm afraid to click on that link.
Just a Yankee restaurant chain providing their menu online. Pizookie is apparently their name for a cookie with some ice cream on top.

Yeah, this should work. It'll take a map based on whatever map setting you have on at the time, so if you're looking at the religious map you'll get a world map of the religions etc.

Re: Steam -- I know that song and dance. :) I actually find Steam quite handy because it's one of the few ways I can get PC games while I'm in Russia.

If it's just a cookie with ice cream, maybe I'll need to try it some time.

:D Stream of consciousness comments are the best comments!

In all seriousness, comments are the entire reason I make AARs. (Well, that and to amuse myself.) Don't worry about making me take time to answer them. And, if it makes you feel better, it's not that time consuming.

Chapter 15: No Japanese ships were harmed in the making of this update (unfortunately?)

However, may I offer you some ships sinking which aren’t Japanese?

h7k9.jpg

I pick up ADM 15 a few days later. I attack my first Zhou army and the results are both bloody and fantastic.

kabz.jpg

Fun fact: I had 130% discipline to their 110%, but they had slightly higher more morale (possibly because they had a larger army to begin with?) and tactics are the same. I still have a long way to go in MIL tech, and not much game left to do it in. I end up choosing a new MIL reformer (old one died); the new guy, oddly enough, is a +10% morale guy, so in a future battle I should have higher morale, I think, since the difference was slight (5.4 vs. 5.1). 23 regiments rise up in celebration of my glorious and bloody victory in Kai. Also, they change the province to Shinto.

I get this event to help compensate:

ezwj.jpg

Battle #2 against Zhou goes much better, as you can plainly see.

65pe.jpg

Thus, the war ends. I feel I did my part (blockading Zhou and killing their soldiers).

We get a new Naval Idea too!

v1rdx.jpg

Followed shortly afterwards by a new Emperor and a terrible heir.

b5bg.jpg

I immediately name him as the General of my army and advise him to personally inspect every cannon to make it is clean. I even offer to light the cord on the back to make it easier to see! I’m just that kind of helpful guy. No need to thank me. Your viscera splattered over the landscape is thanks enough.

So, that’s it for the gameplay. I picked a really weird time to stop, I guess. I think it was the moment that I drove the last few rebels out of Japan. In any case, I have lots of exciting and interesting screenshots to captivate you while I find time to play this weekend.

We begin with a map of Asia.

1o6t.jpg

Ming is still alive, if you zoom in or squint: they’re the tiny OPM just south of Manchu (all they have is Beijing). The white country is the Oirat Horde – I know it’s a bit difficult to read.

Here’s the New World:

aoj9d.jpg

Everything under the “Paused” banner is uncolonized.

Europe:

v0th.jpg

Apart from Super Hansa and Utrecht in Scandinavia, Spain is the main power, or so it would appear from this map. Ottomans are also doing well for themselves.

Let’s look at the scores of every country in the world.

e3zz.jpg

And… no Japan. That’s a bit depressing, isn’t it? Let’s scroll down a bit.

yrdc.jpg

There we are. While our total score looks unimpressive, perhaps, remember that you don’t gain any points unless you are top ten in at least one category. I’ll also have you know that I am superior to France in every way, and if they didn’t have a headstart, I’d be ahead of them. I think, with some luck, I could probably overtake a lot of these countries; I’d be surprised if I can’t crack the first page by the end of the game.

Let’s look at religion.

ukyk.jpg

The two Shinto countries, of course, are Japan and Alaska, but that’s two more countries than the Reformed Christians have. I’m a bit surprised at the persistence of Animism.

Armies of the world:

7q1f.jpg

I apologize if my unscientific army composition causes anybody to go into cardiac arrest. For a long time, if I wanted to expand my army, I just added infantry because I couldn’t really afford artillery. That will soon change.

Let’s look at navies.

4gk7.jpg

Tied for the second largest navy in the world, despite losing at least 60 ships to stupidity. I do need to build some more large ships. It looks like my transport fleet is excessive, but I have a lot of water to cover.

I am the richest non-European power!

w021.jpg

Note how Spain in our timeline is being played by Portugal (and, to a lesser extent, by Spain). Burgundy still irritates me for stealing two Australian provinces. I may have to… “borrow”… those colonies.

It isn’t EU without pies!

swsz.jpg

Without religious ideas, I’ll never get those Muslim provinces converted, and I’m beginning to have doubts about whether that would be even practical.

Here are the trade nodes:

iww7.jpg

Can somebody tell me what “Can create office” means? I can place a merchant there? It’s weird that Collectors shows zero on this screen – my merchants are in Australia and the Philippines. I think I’ll move the Australian merchant to Mexico, and possibly the Philippines merchant to Malacca, if I understand how this screen works. I just recently got enough trade range to trade in Mexico, if you were curious as to why I haven’t gone there yet.

There’s only one coalition in the entire game right now – the Timurids against the Uzbeks. No, really, that’s the whole thing. It’s even a “neutral coalition.” Whatever that means. “We think you’re being sort of a jerk, so if you’d kindly stop, we’d be happy with that. If it’s not too much trouble.”

Wars are equally kind of dull. Burgundy is stomping on Cornwall, there’s some fighting in the New World, Spain is jumping Algeria, and Ayutthaya is fighting most of Asia for Thakhek. Oh, and Mainz is attacking Wurzburg.

Let’s close with a couple of world maps, one political:

v868.jpg

And one religious:

p4l5.jpg

Since it’ll take me a day or two to play, I thought I’d ask for some advice while you wait.

1) I’ve been neglecting buildings pretty horrifically. Again, no money to build them in the past. What should I be building, keeping in mind that I don’t need much in the way of manpower?
2) I know I need more artillery in my army (and probably cavalry too). What’s a good ratio? I know you want even numbers of cavalry, but that’s about it.
3) Next group of ideas? I’m thinking maybe Innovative. Trade is a possibility (although I don’t want a second diplo group). Offensive could be handy too.
4) I’ve accomplished most of my short term and medium term goals. I want to defeat at least one European power by the end of the game. Burgundy almost seems too easy, since I’d be jumping their colonies, but the New World game would be very intriguing. I’m going to colonize as much of “Louisiana” as I can – all of it if possible – and I want to see how that turns out. Russia is probably too tough for me unless they’re tied up in a war somewhere else. Any other thoughts?
5) Anything I’m doing horribly wrong with trade? I’m curious as to why I’m making okay money, but not great money. Maybe it’s just the COTs I’m collecting in? I think moving to the New World could help, naturally, and possibly taking the Trade Ideas down the road.

So, please share your thoughts, and in a day or two I’ll play and update!

1) if you're short on MP, then armories, barracks and so on are an obvious choice.
there is a naval building that increases your naval limit by +1. Given that Japan is a series of islands and peninsulas, this would be good as well, but I don't know when you reach that level.
docks are handy for an island empire, plus they give you greater trade power.

2) As long as every army has at least 1 or 2 cav on either flank, you're good. Artillery/infantry: I usually go with a 60%/40% in favor of infantry, since they die faster.
3) offensive is very powerful.
4) no real opinion, but it would be nice if you could get a couple of Indian provinces (that trade node is so rich...)
5) Could you give us a pic of the trade map mode of the general area? Kind of hard to decide like this.

Blasphemy! Cthulhu demands a Japanese sacrifice every update!

Well I just hope that you get that entire empty continent before the Europeans swoop in. You should also smack Burgundy around for daring to colonize next to you. The audacity of those Europeans!

Russia needs to get the rest of Finland and all of Uzbek. Ugh. I blame the lack of sunken Japanese ships.
