Oooooooh! Japanese Conquest of Korea! Silly Kamchatkians-don't know when a blessing hits them! ;)
Oregon Trail is now updated for the iPhone and iPad, so our family owns both actually. It is a very fun game, though I haven't seen that exercise thing yet! :D

The exercise thing (along with many other features) is only in the sequel.

A less exciting update, but laying the groundwork for some fun in the future.

And yes, Oregon Trail on the Apple IIe was awesome! I never got all the way to the end, but I got close. Years later, I was able to visit my approximate endpoint in real life. It was interesting to do so.

I drove to Independence from Manhattan, KS to do some archival work -- I saw a lot of highway signs advertising various landmarks, but was not able to stop, sadly.

This has been a fun read so far. :)

Dotted.

Glad you've enjoyed it, and I hope you will continue to do so!

I'm looking forward to seeing Japanese Mexico, once those explorers run out of sea to drown in. ;)

Or what approximates to Mexico, of course.

Those pesky Kamchatkans. I always place a single regiment or more on any colony just to avoid that.

Yes, you're taking on Korea next! The first major step in the creation of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere!

Lol, Oregon Trail, what a classic. I always thought the only way to die was from dysentery. I personally preferred Yukon Trail because it was closer to home and you could choose to take a box of kittens up north with you. :p

Normally I do too, but I thought to myself "Surely, Kamchatka can't be that bad?!" How wrong I was. And clearly, you've forgotten cholera and drowning from fording rivers you really shouldn't. :)

Finally, it's time for war with your oldest rival! I hope you can vassalize them in one go (I don't think so though :( ).

Yeah, me too. Unlike EU3, after the natives attack their population stays the same, meaning as long as you have a regiment there (and don't attack the natives yourself) you will still get the native base tax/manpower bonus.

Well, in 1.5, you automatically attack natives when you first arrive. No, I sadly can't vassalize them, but maybe another time!

Starting to get missions to conquer Korea?

It's been a choice I could take for some time, but I just did some claims fabrication this time around.

This reminds me to state that the Zero-width space needs to be more common on the Internet.

:):does some quick math::)

I didn't even know that was a thing!

Event pictures fail
Gaijin samurai? Really?
We need manga now!

I don't see any gaijin samurai in the story... even the emperor of Korea is Japanese, remember?

I think he refers to the picture to the event "Unruly Samurai". The men are clearly westerners, and hence "gaijin".

My other favorite bizarre event text in the last update is when they say they want to explore the New World to find a "new route to India". Uh, pretty sure unless there's a portal, warp hole, or other teleportation device, the quickest way to India is just, you know, to go west.

EDIT: Possible update tomorrow, more probably Wednesday.

Maybe it's the other way round: parallel-universe Uesugi think that "India" means North America (like the conquistadors etc. calling Native Americans "Indians")... and then discover the REAL India and don't realise it's not North America... etc.

Well, at least the Merchant arranges an expedition-event states that he wants "to explore the uncharted waters to the west" in order to find a sea route to India. Maybe he just have some really old maps, and haven't realised you already know the western waterway to India.

I visited the Whitman mission while on a visit to my girlfriend back in our long-distance days. I didn't even make the Oregon trail connection until we were reading the signs. And I never did figure out to what extent the history was whitewashed, as is done at the California missions (I'm so grateful to the elementary school teacher who had us read Island of the Blue Dolphin and at least alluded to the fact that the mission system wasn't so great from the native point of view).

Edit: Yes, I'm completely on an off-topic trail, and I'll stop, but mentioning this reminded me I had meant to ask some questions about the events there. I got some answers.

Life for the natives was pretty horrible...still is in some parts though, the reservations in the Dakotas and Montana are like going back in time a hundred years with how impoverished they are.

But having grown up in Montana everything is about Lewis and Clark, signs and parks all over the place with their names plastered on it. With the exception of Custer's battlefield, seems like in Montana they regard ole Custer as just slightly less great than Lewis and Clark.

Well, PDS haven't though of Japan taking part in these kind of events (nor would it make any historical sense to sail east from Japan, w/o 21st century knowledge, that there are lands ripe for taking in the east.

Surely your expeditions are looking for the Venetians! And by the time you've finally discovered America and the error of your ways the natives will have become 'East Venetians' :)

Well, this is one good explanation. Venetians, Dutch or Portuguese, Maybe even Romans, from what Japanese hear in the markets of China.

One weird update that was. Kamchatkans getting in the way of your dragon hunting, Korea beating Manchu, someone is dancing to avoid death from snakebite.

I thought you would pile up and bit off pieces of Ming in such situation. Eh, at least you will practice dragon hunting with Koreans.

Yeah... maybe!

Show those Kamchatkaniks who is boss!

I have not and will not forget their treason!

Well, at least the Merchant arranges an expedition-event states that he wants "to explore the uncharted waters to the west" in order to find a sea route to India. Maybe he just have some really old maps, and haven't realised you already know the western waterway to India.

That's possible!

I know very little about the Whitman mission (apart from Oregon Trail II), which pretty just presents it as a "who knows?" kind of story.

I have heard so many horror stories about living in Montana... I think I'll pass. :p (All weather related, naturally).

Well, PDS haven't though of Japan taking part in these kind of events (nor would it make any historical sense to sail east from Japan, w/o 21st century knowledge, that there are lands ripe for taking in the east.

Obviously, but I like the other explanations better. ;)

Surely your expeditions are looking for the Venetians! And by the time you've finally discovered America and the error of your ways the natives will have become 'East Venetians' :)

You could be on to something!

Well, this is one good explanation. Venetians, Dutch or Portuguese, Maybe even Romans, from what Japanese hear in the markets of China.

I've only played one more update after this, and I haven't ignored the possibility of getting more involved in the Old World. I will decide soon!

I'm going to post the next update Friday (possibly tomorrow).

Haha, yeah the winters are horrible! Snow snow and more snow! And then the summer time is hot like 90s to 100s so you get both extremes lol. Reason why I left there and only go back to visit the fam.

Chapter 8: This update brought to you by the number eleven

The tricky part about fighting Korea: no matter how much you cajole or threaten, the Japanese army refuses to swim across the straits. Come on, guys! If my math is right – and if we know anything about my math, it’s infallible – it’s an inch, inch and a half tops! If this were Oregon Trail, I would be telling you to ford that strait. Ford it like there is no tomorrow!

cjjc.jpg

I must persevere. Clearly, from that screenshot, there is only a Korean army of two regiments. Nothing could possibly go wrong!

pfey.jpg

The fog of war: my old nemesis. Can we declare war on fog? Since this is more than just Korea and Japan, let’s take a gander at the theater at large.

nl5s.jpg

Manchu, if you recall, is my ally, whilst Ming is the ally of Korea. Wait… Manchu! I try a new and more exciting tactic. I ask for military access; I’ll land my mighty armies on the coast of Manchuria, then proceed into Korea from the north! Just call Japan the Carthage of the East, and my general Hannibal. Things turned out okay for Carthage and Hannibal, right?

I hire an admiral both to lead my fleet and for future explorations, and he’s a good one. He wipes out a Korean fleet (and gets me a free ship in the process).

0yl1.jpg

So, with the enemy fleet gone, it’s time to land in Manchuria. Wait, what’s that? The Korean army decided to attack Laoxi, in Manchuria? To the boats, my friends! I dub this strategy the “Chain o’ doom.” Anybody ever using this strategy after me must use that name, and only that name. If I had a time machine, I would go back in time and enforce it in advance. The US Constitution only says no “ex post facto” laws, not “ex pre facto,” so it’s legal.

8fhe.jpg

Ming surrenders to Xi (I didn’t even remember them fighting) and gives up a lot of provinces. Xi is clearly a future player in the game of Asia, and they would be receptive to an alliance if I were not presently at war. We’ll come back to them later. I get admin tech 6 towards the end of 1565, which is kind of boring, but is one tech closer to #7, which means more ideas. In April 1566, we take Gyeonsang. Japanese and Korean forces clash again a few weeks later, with a different outcome.

jrmm.jpg

My plan was simple: I detached a few regiments to begin a siege, fooling the Koreans into attacking me. Then the reinforcements charged in, and victory was mine. A couple of battles later, the Korean army is gone, and I spread out to siege. I lose my diplo advisor and replace him with +10% to morale. I start colonizing the Kurile Islands in later 1567; I need them and Sakhalin to finish my mission. In 1568, I get 100% war score against Korea, only to discover that they are too big to vassalize. Boo! (I’d hoped the war score would drop, as it does in Vicky 2, when provinces were occupied. No such luck.) I settle for two provinces, a transfer of trade power, and some cash.

4x0h.jpg

Manchu considers me a rival again, but Xi just signed an alliance, so do what you want, Manchu. We return to peace and a bit of boredom. I finish the Kuriles in 1573 and start on Sakhalin. My new mission choice is to colonize Samtoy again. I also get a new idea.

fxb1.jpg

This is also enough for my second national idea – a handy +1 prestige per year. My new colonist is sent off to Samtoy while the other continues on Sakhalin. Ming and Xi fight again in 1575, and Xi gets even bigger. I definitely backed the right horse in that race.

pnd4.jpg

Easiest. Mission. Ever.

1n32.jpg

My army advisor dies – the new one is +10% to land morale. Samtoy becomes self-sustaining in 1577; next up is Manila. In 1578, I claim the throne of Ming, but it will sadly eventually come to naught. I finish in Sakhalin and move on to Visayas. In 1580, I complete the Colonization set.

w7ur.jpg

For finishing the set, I get a free CB against pagans; almost time to start going after the New World again. I sent a conquistador and explorer east and discover… Guam! (I’m going southeast, just for a change of scenery). I lose my admin advisor in 1581; new guy is +1 prestige. Manchu proves to be a jerk, even when they aren’t trying to be, making vassalizing Korea that much harder.

mn54.jpg

The old Emperor dies and I get a new one; good deal!

5kvg.jpg

I like the heir too. I join the coalition against Korea in 1587.

1z83.jpg

Right now, it’s Ming and Japan against Korea, but it’s a start. I get mil tech 11 in August. Ming goes bankrupt in 1588. 1589 gives me admin tech 7, which gives me a decision to make.

cj61.jpg

I’m thinking of going with a military idea, since admin is hard to come by and I don’t want to lag behind in diplo tech any longer. Quality is attractive, since it helps both the navy and the army, yet the bonus to leader siege offered by Defensive is also a possibility.

What do you think, dear readAARs? Am I being paranoid, and should I go for Expansion or even Naval instead and damn the diplo tech? I have to say, a third Colonist sounds pretty enticing too.

I haven’t played any farther, and I won’t for a day or two, so please do share your thoughts. I’m committed to some expansion in the New World, but I’m starting to think I’ll end up annexing Korea. I just don’t know.

I am mostly a noob at EU4, but with a 6 military ruler, picking a military group sounds good! I can't really advise as to which though. Given that your heir has only 1 diplo, I would avoid those groups. I think diplo tech boosts your colonial range too, so that will help when you finally find the new world!

Looking at your current emperor and his heir, I'd probably go for economic/administrative ideas, depending on how much you rely on mercenaries. As for military: Quality or offensive. Leader siege is a nice gimmick but not more - offensive offers discipline (reduces your casualties), leader fire/shock/maneuver and forcelimits.
For diplo tech: lag behind. Diplo tech is the least important of the three early on, unless you deliberatly need the additional colonization range.

Wow, you completely destroyed that Korean fleet

Don't think I've ever seen that with two fleets of similar sizes.

I'd go with either administrative/economic or offensive, depending on whether you primarily need money or better soldiers. I'd say offensive; that discipline bonus is juicy, and if you finish you get the Forced March which really helps you win battles and bravely run away. Plus I've usually found that I tend to pile up mil points because there isn't really much you can do with them other than advancing tech.

I am mostly a noob at EU4, but with a 6 military ruler, picking a military group sounds good! I can't really advise as to which though. Given that your heir has only 1 diplo, I would avoid those groups. I think diplo tech boosts your colonial range too, so that will help when you finally find the new world!

You might well know more than I do. :)

Won't going for admin ideas hurt me? I'd have less for stability, cores, etc.

Maybe Trade ideas. You'll need money from trade to pay soldiers and getting money from two more trade notes is tempting.

Trade is something I understand almost not at all.

How trade works:

It's like a domino effect. You put a merchant into trade node A, with orders to pull money to trade node B. You put another merchant in trade node B, with orders to pull money towards your home trade node. You use Light Ships to enhance your trade power, allowing you to better steer trade (money) where you want it to go.
Your home trade node (the one that your capital deals with) automatically collects trade (money) and you technically don't need a merchant there. Just enough Light Ships to keep control.

Going with a Spain example: you colonise the Carribean and part of Brazil. Both have their own trade node that sends money towards Europe and the general Moroccan area. From there it gets distributed between London, Antwerp, Sevilla, Bordeaux. So, in ideal circumstances, you would require Merchants in the Carribean, Brazil, Western Europe and Morocco trade nodes. Only problem is that you start with 2 Merchants. The only way to get more is with ideas (and, I think, some countries/events give you an extra merchant, but I could be wrong there).
