Specifically, the Shogun should not be able to spontaneously declare war on their own vassals. Every game they attack Hosokawa within a few months of the start, which results in Hosokawa and any allies ceasing to be Japanese vassals.

Japan also needs a tax base and manpower buff, currently they're dirt poor and their manpower reserves are so pitiful that they can't even sustain a decent sized army.

No, Japan does not need to be further buffed to ahistoric proportions. It does need Sakoku law to work and to be unable to use Daimyo CBs though.

It's not ahistoric at all, if anything the current depiction is the ahistorical one, in-game Japan is currently significantly poorer and weaker than it was in real life after the end of the Warring States period.

Japan hasn't been right since 1.7 when annex anyone would have you annex the shogun.
Isn't that bug fixed?
And if I am not mistaken it wasn't unique to Japan but due to Shogunate system Japan is the one hit hardest by the bug...

But Shogunate do need to be rethink or redone...
The shogunate-daimyo relation do feels unique, but only apparent once you conquer non-Japan nation (the 'vassal can attack other vassal' thing) and when you play as daimyo, it just felt like playing other independent nation but you just can't interact with non-Japan nation...
Also, Unite Japan decision shouldn't result in you become the emperor...

But I guess that isn't the point of this thread...

Haha, no. I suspect people are mistakenly concluding this due to LA.

Comparing Japan vs Korea/Ming/SEA and actual history, it's a complete joke to assert that Japan is underpowered, especially if you look at their ideas on top of it.

I just did a Japan game very recently. Even with all the base tax buffs to countries in the mainland, it still wasn't even challenging to dominate Korea, the hordes in Manchuria, and China even before westernization.

Whether or not Japan is "ahistorical" in terms of its total base tax, it doesn't need a buff. Gameplay always comes first.

No one can express how historically powerful or rich Japan was in EUIV terms. It stalemated Korea very inconclusively in the late 16th century, and it was under sakoku policies for the majority of the time frame -- there's no game mechanic that can model the yottsu no kuchi that provided Japan's only measured interactions with the outside world. Could a warmongering Tokugawa Japan have conquered Joseon Korea, the last remnants of the Ming, or even Qing China? There's no way of saying.

In terms of game balance, Japan is already a demon in player hands. It has, what? Over twice the base tax of Korea, and more base tax than all the Machurian region? Shinto Japan also has some of the best overall ideas in the game: regiment after regiment of powerful infantry and very few revolts.

But on-topic, yeah, Japan needs fixing. But if you're willing to hold out hope that Paradox has a Divine Wind 4.0 in the works, you could just not play Japan right now :p

AFIAK, Japan in EU's time frame had roughly the same population as France, with about 2/3 of its GDP. In game term, which probably means Japanese provinces can use minor boost, especially since Chinese/Indian provinces finally got the deserved buffs.

Now, Japan as the tag/country that exist at the start of the grand campaign -- it really needs to be fixed. "Japan" is much stronger than it was in reality, and the whole political situation in Japan has the little resemblance with its historical counterpart. Ashikaga Shogunate was the weakest of the three Shogunate by far, especially after Ashikaga Yoshinori was killed in 1441. In-game Japan usually have no problem annexing its Daimyos, or mobilizing much larger army than its Daimyos.

Fixing this would require a lot of works, though. Perhaps bringing back the HRE-style "Shogunate" mechanic would do it. If it nerfs the starting "Japan" tag, it will cut down on its early expansion. It would be nice if Daimyo "government" is split into Shugo/Sengoku/Domain, as well. Going to Sengoku daimyo should require the combination of monarch skill/tech, and should give substantive bonus while removing the influence of Shogunate. The unification decision should turn them into Domains.

Now, for the mods that start at 1356 -- I don't think EU can manage it, the political mess that Japan was in 1356 is far more suitable for CK2, if anything. China in 1356 is such an interesting situation, on the other hand -- but that is going off topic.

What I don't understand about the current unification: Why does Japan turn into a monarchy with the Shogun's dynasty as emperors? If there's one thing all these Daimyos could agree on, it probably was to keep the Yamato on the throne, albeit as puppet emperors for a long time, with the Shogun basically being the de-facto ruler - a practice that ended after the Boshin War and the Meiji Restoration.

The last Shogunate ended 1867, a few years outside the timeline. It would be better to have Japan keep its Shogunate government post-unification and only lose it if you westernise - some kind of early Meiji Restoration, if you will.
