I don't know about the weight of Katana, but for sure it is not the most amazing cutting blade as some western stereotypes have made it out to be. There is the Talwar, actually having nearly twice the weight of Katana but used to an excellent effect since 13th century.

The unique disk-hilt that was used in Indian swords since antiquity, forces the wielders to move the sword in a particular style, and combined with weight it can make for very fast and unstoppable attacks.

Of course katanas aren't the best cutting sword. That distinction is obviously going to go to some scimitar or sabre, because those are curved swords designed for cutting. Likewise, you'd have to be an idiot to think a shamshir is the best thrusting sword. Katanas are probably not the best specific function X sword in any category. They're designed for versatility.

That guy sure took a long time to say not much of anything and backed it up with the burden of proof is on the viewer.

Talwar was designed with exactly that in mind. It is curved but not as curved as Shamshir or Kilij for example, so combined with the blade's extended shape and weight near the tip, it can thrust very nicely just as it can inflict enormous cuts. Most probably due to the older Indian sword used before Talwar, the Khanda, which was a straight sword.

That guy did around 5-6 videos on those swords, as much as I know he has detailed everything in those videos already, hence this one sounded like half-done, since you'd have to watch his previous ones.

I want to point out that the Katana, as a sword, is designed in the way it is out of necessity and that makes it actually relatively poor as a sword.

The metal used in making a katana is known as Tamahagane in Japan or Pig Iron in the Western world. Tamahagane wasn't used by Western nations for weapons because as a material for the production of a weapon it is actually not very good. This is because it is loaded with carbon which makes the metal brittle, therefore a blade made of Tamahagane would shatter. As a result Japanese sword smiths folded the Tamahagane up to 8 times maximum to work out the iron while not folding it any more because the lack of carbon would make the sword flimsy and weak. As it is, the katana is still relatively poor as it requires a lot of training and wielding the sword wrong causes it to break (I've seen a video of it shattering against wood). Its actually no wonder the samurai never actially used the katana..

Pig iron isn't even steel, so thats by definition not too good for swords.

8 pages of discussion, at least 3-4 of which are arguing about whether Katanas are shite or not.

This is delicious.

Please. Please feed me more.
Heck, I'd be proud if I were a troll and this happened in my thread. People caring enough to have a serious, tangencial discussion? This must be a dream.

Japanophilia should have a dan system like martial arts. OP can't be that much higher than the low kyu grades.

Also, one thing in the thread seems a bit suspicious. From what I know, a Masamune blade would cost a lot more than $12000. The going rate for nihonto is about 20 million yen (roughly $18000 or so) for a non-Masamune (that I know for certain), so an actual Masamune would cost about twice as much as OP suggested...

Signed, Shokyu Japanophile.

That being said, I agree that Japan should be overhauled and also that Katanas are superior to western swords.

Take this thread to the OT please, and not the EU4 forums. It's barely tangentially related to EU4, and now we are only feeding the delusions of a feeble minded, poor humored OP. If you want Satire, try the onion, otherwise stop.

I agree Japan is currently really under-powered.

Asia_Japan.jpg

Such butchery of history is only found in EUIV.

I was really surprised, I only found out that Japan was Korean in late 17th century, I looked back at my saves, I manually save on average about once every 15 years (I play non--ironman) and I went through all the saves and form it I found out that the Korean invasion of Japan began in about !1520! first the Koreans landed in Kyushu (westernmost island of Japan) and annexed it, over the next decades and even centuries the Japanese were gradually getting pushed back but when the Koreans controlled about 1/2 of Japan, Japan managed to somehow pull off a victory and push them off of the largest island (my save showed Korea losing A LOT of land in a span of 15 years in Japan), even so later Korea recovered and reclaimed their lands, and by 1700 the situation looks grim for Japan.... Oh and none of this was caused by player action, I was playing Austria in Europe and I haven't built a single transport nor allied anyone who did anything in Asia.

Pig iron isn't even steel, so thats by definition not too good for swords.
Yeeeeaaah about the "Pig Iron" part... I wasn't thinking when I wrote that part but my point still stands, the steel used in the making of a Katana was only folded over because it was full of carbon which makes it horribly brittle. Even when folded over, the katana can easily break if swung in the wrong way. Being one sided, the katana is horrible in actual battles although it can be effective in one vs one fights which works fine in that case.

In regards to the Samurai they never really used katanas, during the Sengoku period (which was when all the fighting was until Japan was united in the early 17th Century), the use of a katana was thought to be dishonourable unless it was greatly needed and the Samurai themselves much preferred to use bows and/or spears in battles. This doesn't mean they didn't carry them, but they wouldn't use them unless it was vital, however at the end of the Sengoku Period when Japan was united and the Edo Period began, there was no longer much need for Samurai warriors in the new stable and peaceful Japan. As a result of the peace during the Edo Period, the Samurai mostly settled down and became local administrators, it was during this time that the Katana finally became popular as a status symbol.

In regards to the production of the Katana it wasn't anything special, as I said above the process of folding the Katana was to work out the carbon in the steel which was a process used by the Vikings much earlier to make their weapons. By this point in other parts of the world, nations had moved onto using better steel for their weapons and their swords were largely double-edged which made them a lot more practical in battle. The higher quality steel of their weapons meant that the weapons could take a lot more punishment in a battle without breaking and were a lot more effective for wielding in a battle against large groups of enemies.

Although I will admit that unsheathing a katana looks so much better than unsheathing another type of sword.

I feel all that needed to be said. Goodbye.

At this moment are you Euphoric because you're enlightened by your own intelligence?

No, I'm not. I'm simply pointing out the reality. You made this as a joke, not for serious discussion or suggestion. Therefore it is a topic of the OT forums. Not the EU4, CKII or any other game forums. It should be moved to its rightful location.

As to my words, Opinions they are. My own. I'm allowed to express and project them in any way I see fit, and as are you. As to being enlighten, I'm not religious, so not enlightened in that sense. Not Buddhist, so not reaching a state of enlightenment. I'm simply your run of the mill Physicist.
As to Euphoria. No.

In summation, you're trying to troll me. I'd appreciate you stop. I expressed my opinion on the direction of and banality of this thread, and what its course of action is, with my interpretation of you from your very obvious trolling. Take it as it is.
