Listen, I'll have you know that I've learned Japanese from only the best fansubs of imported Kamen Rider episodes. I not only speak Japanese fluidly, but also the Ainu language as well as teaching myself both traditional and simplified Hanzi.

7 is a lucky number in Japanese religion and the Zaibutsu were incredibly powerful, ever wonder why most people drive "Toyotas" or "Camrys"? That's because of the superior Japanese Zaibutsu corporations.
Also the Catholics attacked Japan first, their crusaders didn't stand any chance against the disciplined samurai though.

On a serious note, Japan actually could be a little better. Japan is quite lackluster in terms of game-play after you unite the nation, which you can pretty much do before a max of 50 years. Korea usually allies Ming and in this version, is totally beyond your reach. Asides from taking a thing provinces from the tribes and doing a little colonizing, there isn't much to do as Japan.

I fully agree with the OP. I'm sick of all this "Inherently superior Western tech" bullshit that's going on in the Clausewitz system right now. Japan deserves much better than that. Much, much better than that.
I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my katana.
Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.
Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.
Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.
So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, Japanese units require better stats in the Clausewitz system. Here is the NIs I propose for Japan:
Traditions: +25% discipline, +50% morale
-25% tech cost
-30% idea cost
-4 national unrest
+2 land leader shock, +2 land leader fire
+50% global trade power
+33% siege ability
-1 monthly local autonomy
Ambitions: +100% naval force limit, +400 yearly settler increase
Counts as unique tech group "Japanese", tech cost 75%
Now that seems a lot more representative of the destructive power of the Japanese in real life, don't you think?
