This is hilarious.

I do however think Japan needs to be made so I can play as the Imperial Family. I will never accept the shogunate...

This. If I manage to reunite all Japan and decrease autonomy to a very low level, I'd like to restore the emperor back to power. Or at least have some kind of rebels that want to restore the emperor to power (not pretender ones).

It almost happened a century before EU4's start, and actually happened 47 years later after the game's end.

Exactly. I would love to play as the Emperor of Japan, and unite the land through force. The Shogunate should not use the Imperial Seal! They need to implement a shogunate system, similar but not exactly like the system in EU3 Divine Wind.

I would say that it would be based around the strongest Daimyo clan, with there being a casus belli on the current shogun to overthrow him. The Emperor would be able to annex Daimyo or allie them through events leading to a Meiji Resoration-esque war, in which the Emperor takes power. This really needs done.

Perhaps a new mechanic entirely would be great. Something that takes mechanism from HRE, Celestial Monarchy and other things.

For example, 'Japan' would be a grouping of clans similar to HRE, led by one faction who will be the 'Shogunate'. Kind of like HRE without voting or elected monarchs. The Shogun's power would be based on 'Shogunate Authority', similar to 'Imperial Authority' in HRE. It would affect a lot of things, including probably tax and manpower among other things. The lower the authority gets, the more the vassals will begin to hate the Shogun and if it gets low enough, clans would be allowed to declare war on each other and also get the casus belli to overthrow the Shogun.

I have yet to think how to integrate the Imperial Court into this, but at least this will be better than the current system. If the Shogunate authority gets drastically low, there should be an option/casus belli to restore the emperor, who will not be a Shogun but a regular despotic monarch (absolute/administrative with high tech).

Emperor Go-Daigo also took power from the collpasing Kamakura/Minamoto Shogunate this way back in 1332.

Yeah the pig iron part was me being an idiot...

Nevertheless being a single edged sword is fine for fighting a single opponent or a small group but in a battle one edge suddenly becomes unwieldy as you are stuck in a large group and its not so easy to twist so as to get the blade to kill an enemy.

Nevertheless even if the one edge makes it more effective it also means that said edge will become blunt much faster due to all the stress being focussed on said one edge.

As for the video, I can't link it because it was removed from YouTube but whether it is real or not the point still stands. Katana can break relatively easily due to the metal Tamahagane, as you said, it requires a special process to make due to the carbon making it either too flimsy or too brittle. This is why the swordsmiths fold it over a maximum of 8 times to purge the carbon but nevertheless (I DO love that word) the Katana can break relatively easily. I'm not saying that Katanas are horrible swords (although I MAY have described them as such in previous posts) but they certainly aren't the God-swords people think they are and they are certainly no better than cutting through metal bars than other swords.

I will admit that the person in the wood video likely was using the Katana wrong because they aren't meant to be swing so much as slit- slitting is much more effective as the Tamahagane generally won't be able to withstand much swinging- but even so, slitting isn't very effective for battles although it could work for 1 v 1 fights.

But let me admit, I love Katana, I love everything about them, but they certainly aren't the God swords people seem to think they are.
Honestly it really was likely that it was a fake katana. I own several knock-off weapons and while some are certainly sturdy enough for demonstrations of force (I once hacked a tree stump in half [not in a single swing mind you] with my replica axe), quite a few are barely held together enough to even exist as a solid object (I have a spear who's adhesive was so shitty that it literally just fell apart). If someone was using a poor quality (or no quality) weapon then it's quite likely that it could just explode like you're describing.

I like this idea. An HRE style system would represent Japan better than it does currently for sure.

Don't worry. I didn't read your attempt at sarcasm but most likely it was too subtle for some to understand. You see, the OP's joke was damn too palpable for me to even chuckle at, and there still were people who took it seriously. Don't be disappointed if people don't get your joke.

Y SO SRS? This is a great thread for relieving stress by laughing. And given that Japan still is somewhat unbalanced (subject interactions make everyone Ashikaga for example) and eastern religions are crap, it's a nice reminder for the devs to DO SOMETHING about it.
