Komichywa (that's hello in Japanese to all you westerners)
I was playing EUIV recently as the nation of Nippom (Japan) and I noticed Japan's treatment in the game is very ahistorical!
My name is David (but my Japanese name is Ryu), I'm a 30 year old art major at the University of Michigan, I draw manga (Japanese Comics) as a side hobby and also minor in Japanese history up to 1500s, as you can clearly see I know a great deal about Yomatoe (ancient word for Japan) and I really care aboput how it's treated in game.
While the game is correct in having Japan divided by Daimyo (Japanese noblemen) at the start, it really has lackluster national ideas, especially in military! I should know, I got my Katana license 3 years ago and imported a Masamume Katana sword straight from Japan for $12,000. I've practiced with it every day, and I'm now good enough to cut clean through steel beams (for comparison, not even jet fuel can bend or melt steel beams!) I'm getting better every day, and I hope to impress many Japanese people with my knowledge of their powerful sword art.
In history Japan was feared for it's disciplined Samurai and Katanas of doom, that's why England never invaded Japan, and why during WWI Japanese Katana Soldiers would always lead the charge into the trenches of Europe. Japanese smiths used only the finest steel, that they folded over a million times to make a blade sharper than any scimitar and stronger than any Zhweihander, while also being light as a feather. That is also why Japan continues to use Katanas in their modern day armies!
As it stands, Japan can quickly be overrun by the Nanban (Japanese for Westerner) while they only have mustkets I think you can clearly see this is a mistake. That's why I made a new Japanese National Idea tree that I feel is far more fitting of how the nation of Nippom was historically.
Idea 1: Bushido Discipline: all Japanese units get +20.00% discipline and +10.00% Morale along with 8 base shock
Idea 2: Shogunate: Nippom gets +30.00% Manpower Recovery Speed and -2.00 War Exhaustion Monthly
Idea 3: Zaibutsu: Japan gets +25.07% Global Trade Power
Idea 4: Shintu Syncretism: Japan gets +6.00 Tolerance of Heretics and Heathens and Shinto provinces can't be converted
Idea 5: Zen: Japan gets -45.00% stability cost and westernization is cut in half.
Now that seems much more representative of the "Prussia of The East" don't you think? :3
TL;DR Japan is really underpowered in EUIV and needs some extra buffs, see my idea tree above.
Thank you and Shalom (That's "Thank you and goodbye" in Japanese)
EDIT: While it's important that Parodox adds this to the main game, in the meantime I'd like to thank the amazing Voffvoffhunden for creating a mod to properly balance Japan for EUIV
