I've come back to HOI3 after many years and I had a few questions.

For upgrading infantry equipment (or anything else) does it have to go step by step so INF 1 -> 2 -> 3 or if I turn the upgrade slider all the way down then research several levels of INF tech can I upgrade from 1936 equipment straight to 1940? I dimly recall being able to skip upgrades like that in HOI2, but its been a while.

It seems I can roll China very quickly (they are at 99% surrender by early 1938) but I assume its best to drag the war out longer for the wartime production benefits. However communist China and the other warlord states don't join the war, is there a date for an event for fire, or do I just have to declare on each of them? Do I even want to, is it worth the threat generated?

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I bumble through Pacific conquests

Thanks

As faar as I can tell, upgrades happen in order, so it's 1 > 2 > 3....

Not sure about the Chinese warlords, because they never joined China in my own Japan campaign. You should already have conquered Shanxi by this point, since they're included in the Marco Polo Bridge decision. Guanxi and ComChi both have significant resources and leadership points, so I would consider them to be worth the effort. The others are practically irrelevant, and a pain to garrison. If you do fight those others (Xibei, Yunnan), puppeting is probably the better option, even though they may never have enough excess resources to provide any actual benefits.

I think (but don't quote me on it) that Nationalist China might have claims on the warlord states, which means if you want to play around a bit, you could conquer it all, and then release a puppet Grand China.

Thanks for the answers, so no gaming the upgrade system ;)

Making 1 large China puppet seems like a good idea (too bad I already puppeted Communist China) I guess I'll have to start 1 more war on Guanxi, then I can help Germany clobber the allies!

If you are after clobbering the Allies early, then I would suggest that threat may not be much of an issue anyway? There's the worry that threat may cause the Allies to prepare for war earlier. Yet the UK and USA are not highly motivated by the AI to come looking for you, so you get to regulate the battles. The other downside is that the Allies will embargo you sooner, so build up stockpiles earlier.

This is a good point - Germany just conquered Poland, and I was thinking about joining the war right now. I figure the best way i can help Germany is by distracting the Royal Navy. Also I have all these marines just waiting to invade the beaches under Yamatos guns...

The down side to releasing all of China as a puppet is that you don't get the best parts of it: the Leadership and resources from ComChi, Guanxi, and a few key pieces of NatChi. My preference would be to annex ComChi and Guanxi, and select your choice of either Puppet or Annex as a war goal for NatChi, depending on how much you're willing to play "whack-a-mole" against partisan uprisings. I would definitely puppet the other Chinese warlords, since they lack serious Leadership points or enough resources to be worth the cost of a garrison.

Once GER has pulled the trigger and dragged the Allies to war, your own Threat is basically irrelevant except for its effect on the US. Distracting a big part of the Royal Navy BEFORE Italy joins the war is a major consideration, otherwise the Italian fleet usually makes a fine heavy-duty carpet on the floor of the Mediterranean and Italy gets kicked out of Africa for lack of supply, after getting double-teamed by both the French and UK fleets. GER in the hands of the AI doesn't help, because they'll lose their fleet in the first few months of the war before Italy gets involved, so the Allies are able to concentrate their full resources against each Axis member's fleet, one at a time. GER in the hands of a human player can wreck enough of the Royal Navy to distract them and save the Italian fleet, so Italy runs rampant in North Africa and onward from there into the Middle East. Japan should be able to do something similar.

This was my thinking as well - I joined the European War by Oct 1939, I had to contend with several RN fleets, but only sunk a few CA. I did trap nearly the entire French fleet in Vietnam though, their CV and 3 BBs, quite nice. I think the RN might still be lurking off of India or in Australia.

Italy joined shortly after I did and broke through Southern France and they're doing well in Africa. Germany hasn't declared on Netherlands yet, not sure if they even will. Even if they do I think France will fall before they can break though Belgium. Its a strange war.

I've seen GER declare war on the Netherlands early in 1940, but they usually wait until around mid-year or later. In one game, they waited until Paris was surrounded and France was about to collapse. I'm not sure about the scripts, but the exact timing seems to depend on how GER is doing in either NOR or DEN, or how many troops it has available to put on the BeNeLux borders. This game can produce some VERY strange wars, but at least most of them are reasonably plausible.
