So I recently took Constantinople as the last part of the pentarchy that I didn't have. I have miaphysite patriarchs in all the rest and after finally fabricating a claim on the duchy of thrace and fighting a protracted war, I've got it.

I noticed I did seige the actual bishopric of constantinople and took it successfully before enforcing my demands on my brother-in-law, the Byzantine Emperor. However, once the war was over, and I was liege of everything in the duchy, I was not the liege of the Ecunemical patriarch of the bishopric of the Constantinople. He was actually still the vassal of the byzantine emperor?

What? How? Help - I want to make the ecumenical patriarch a) my Vassal, b) make him a miaphysite...

Why did not simply become my holding like everything else I conquered? I didn't have this problem when I CB'd and warred rome. That bishopric was mine at the conclusion of the war immediately.

Thanks

It's because he's a King ranked vassal of the ERE. You'll need to go to the Ecunemical Patriach's screen and declare a county claim war for his Bishopric.

The Ecumenical Patriarch in Constantinople isn't a pentarch for non-Orthodox religions. For Miaphysites, the fifth pentarch is the Coptic Pope. (Counter-intuitive, but that's the way Paradox designed it.) There also isn't a "mending the schism" equivalent event for any religion but Orthodox.

So I can still use my fabricate-claim-option even though it is my duchy? I don't see how I else I can declare war on him. :)

You should have a county claim (I think that is what its called at least). Basically if you own the county you get a claim on all castles, cities, and temples in the county.

Actually there is an entry for "Constantinople" under my religion tab for the Pentarchy. I'm not after any special event, I just want to fill in all the portraits under my religion tab, in the pentarchy section. Currently there is a question-mark for Constantinople.

You don't need a claim, if you hold a county you can declare war on anyone who's not a vassal who controls any barony-rank title within it. It's called a County Claim casus belli, as it basically entails you asserting your authority over a rogue lord who sits inside a county that's hostile to him. It's this casus belli that lets you take out the Hashashin and the Holy Orders, and its workable for awkwardly inherited baronies and religious leaders too.

Whats annoying is that it says he is not independant, so I guess I have to declare war, AGAIN, on the byzantine emporer.

Which you would think, I wouldn't have to because my first Casus Belli was for the Duchy of Thrace, which covers the bishopric of constantinople anyways... So if I understand correctly, I gotta declare war on the ERE again, with a claim of just this county.

Ugh... I don't understand why it was treated differently from every other county.

It's not. If you declare war against a liege for his vassal's ducal title, you don't get any holdings other than what that vassal controls in the relevant duchy. If the liege controls titles, or others of his vassals control titles, you don't get those. In this case, replace the vassal with the liege, but you don't get control of what the Ecumenical Patriarchy controls of Thrake because the Patriarchy is not part of Thrake, it just controls part of it.

I had this same problem.....years back, a High crown law HRE had conquered an autonomous vassal ERE, which was my doing, trying to weaken the empire so I could take it over ( overdid it a bit :p ). But thankfully the new HRE lost it through inheritance. Anyway so I'm now the ER emperor, but the HRE (strong as ever) still controlled the Consti bishopric, and the Ecu. patriarch was their vassal.

I managed to take it by roflstomping some coastal provinces, and thankfully, while the Ecu. pat. was still HRE vassal, after he died the title reverted to the current holder of Consti's bishopric.

To get a Miaphysite bishop of Constantinople, declare war on the Ecumenical Patriarch using your county claim and appoint a Miaphysite as Bishop in the Hagia Sophia. I note that the Miaphysites do not accept Constantinople’s claim of theological priority over Alexandria. If you appoint a Miaphysite bishop to the bishopric of Alexandria, he will turn the holding over to the Coptic Pope, who, if you are a king or higher, will become your vassal. It is also possible to give the Coptic Pope a landed holding, including the bishopric of Constantinople; as his title is considered ducal-level, he will (potentially) accept an offer of vassalization, unlike the Pope or the Ecumenical Patriarch, although he is unlikely to do so unless you are an emperor and the same culture. Click on his portrait in the religion screen to conduct diplomacy. Note that you must completely control Constantinople to reunite the Roman Empire, so you cannot do this unless you control the Hagia Sophia.

It is in fact possible to end up with a Miaphysite Ecumenical Patriarch, by converting Constantinople and then bumping off all the Orthodox courtiers until only Miaphysites are available to inherit, but the game doesn’t notice that this has happened. It also doesn’t match what historically happened when Catholics or Muslims captured the city.
