Its expensive if you put it that way, but in reality you wouldn't buy all dlcs at their full price and all at once.
There are sales in which you can pick up dlcs for like 75% off. There are also third party sellers who pretty much sell these DLCs at a big discount all year round.
And only 3-4 dlcs are a must have, the rest are dependent on what nation you play.

You also don't need unit packs or cosmetics.
So if you either wait for an official sale or buy from 3rd parties, you can pickup everything you need for like 20$

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

I just wanted to explain why, as a Paradox-noob, EU4 isn't on my radar but EU5 would be an insta-buy.

I would also love to see EU5 in the near future, but I asked the devs in a thread not too long ago and they said they will continue working on EU4 for the time being.
So If you like Europa Universalis (the concept), I wouldn't hesitate to play EU4 now.

Problem is then you will get an even bigger price tag. Base game will have a higher price and there will then be more DLC released over the years, current stance is Pdox keeps making DLCs as long as they sell.
