It should be noted that the red saltire that "graces" the post-1801 UK flag is NOT the legitimate cross of St. Patrick. It is an entirely English invention that never existed until the 1780s, when it was inserted as part of the badge of the English-founded "Order of St. Patrick". There was quite a furor in Ireland at the time against what was called "The Bloody Cross of Scotland" being imposed on Ireland.

St. Patrick's cross is a Cross Pattee.

Vince Morley wrote a good summary of the truth, reproduced at http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/ie-stpat.html, among other places.

I thinks it well known the cross meant to represent St. Patrick is of English invention but, after all, before 1800 Ireland was basically a colony of Britain so we could design whatever flag we wanted :D

The key here is that the crosses of St. George and St. Andrew were adopted by the peoples OF THOSE LANDS as their OWN symbol and not imposed upon them by a foreign satrapy.

So?

If what you say is true (and I couldn't open the link), so what? In terms of EU2, what difference does it make? The cross of St. Patrick was still included on the British flag in 1801.
