...and the one getting hammered is poor Netherlands. It's 1874, and the Dutch Empire already encompasses a great deal of Africa (former Egypt - annexed - and three dozen colonies) southeast Asia (the starting provinces N. gets and two more colonies) and Belgique (of course ;) ).

Not too shabby, huh? Add a standing army of 48 divisions (42 of them colonial, but all with add. brigades and war-experienced) a navy that is second only to UKs and you get the picture. Money issues are no issues whatsoever.

What about BB, you ask? Well, presumably it's high. Not skyrocketing (just 23+) but enough to get me a host of wars .

First, Brazil declares. Chile&Argentina follow, but my British allies mop the floor with all three and after a few months Brazil asks ...me  for peace giving ME  a few of their provinces.

Whatever, I stupidly did accept that deal (after turning it down once, I tried to get a white peace and they wouldn't accept it no matter what) and that brought my BB even further up. So, after a couple of weeks (and while I was watching for the Frenchies, I had really bad relationships with them) my former allies the Prussian (Germany never formed) DoWed me and attacked with 120 divisions, plus 40 or so from the German minors they were allied with.

While I was trying to fend off the Prusskies ( :D ) with my 32 divisions (no mobilization, all my european population are clerks and craftsmen so a mobilization would kill my industry permanetly) on Dutch ground, the Portuguese DoW me too and start snatching away my African possesions.

Managed to gather my colonial force (5 cavalry divisions) and after playing cat and mouse with the Portuguese, I managed to kill all of their divisions, one by one and started retaking my land back.

Meanwhile, in the European front, I managed to ship in 11 more divisions, and the Brits have send me 10 or so, and by adding lots of manpower to the pool (by my colonials) I manage to go on a dynamic offensive, recapture Luxemburg and Arlon, and take the whole Rheinland and three more provinces. I have a warscore of +15 and try for a white peace but the Prussian refuse, and a couple of days later the offer Two of their Rhine provinces for peace! I take them, BB goes further up, France DoWs, I manage to hold them off (with British help) and capture half France (Brits captured a great deal of the rest) - in teh meantime Portugal has sued for White peace and I grant it with joy - again the French refuse my attempts for a white peace or a peace with indemnities, and offer four of their provinces! Having a war exhastion of 70+ I had to make piece (rebellions started going up here and there and I had 95% of my troops tied up against France).

BB goes further up, I release Java, not much good, so I release Egypt too... much better. Then, while I was trying to build up, UK declares colonial war! Not much of a deal, I think. Wrong. Brazil - after the peace treaty expired - declares again, along with their allies, and occupies all my possesions in S.America. Britain, allthough loosing half of their claim buildings to my mobile colonial cavalry, does not accept peace - even with several provinces - so my nave is tied @home.

Needles to say, right after the p.t. with Prussia expires, they DoW me with all their following and throw 160 divisions at me. My manpower is exhausted after all those years of fighting, rebellions errupt all the time, I can't move my fleet, the Prussian armies of 10 and 15 division are steamrolling over Netherlands... well, Oranje is as good as dead.

Just a question to the experienced players frequenting this forum: is there any way out of this death spiral? It seems impossible to get out of it. I even tried to reload a position which seemed quite favorable, but nothing goes. The whole world hates me, I can't improve my relations with anybody, I am being DoWed every second week by someone (I am surprised Benghal hasn't DoWed me yet too :D ) and I can't win the war against Prussia this time - they are too bloody strong and I have no allies.

Man, thats a fargin brutal scenario. Twas entertaining as well, but alas i have no advice for you. Your BB seems out of control. Im shure riding it out would be about as much fun as hammerring nails into your foot. Just restart and apply all that you have learned in hindsight.

I always try to set goals for myself, it helps me plan better. Some decisions need to be made as circumstances change, but a long term goal can really help you focus on playing as efficiently as you can.

Easiest way is to release satellites...

Dow Egypt, take as many provinces as you can but don't annex. After Annex, release all as satellite, BB goes down.

Taking civilized nation's provinces, regardless state or colony = 2 BB...

Just get satellite and/or indemnity instead.

Unless you play a strong nation, such as UK, Russia, China, France, heck, even Prussia, BB war is something you need to watch out for.

Its too late for that guys. He has already released three, but keeps getting sucked into BB wars because he keeps taking those peace deals that up his BB even further. He is in a perpetual cycle of BB wars. Offering his way out of future warsat a considerable loss(Land) is the only way i can think of him surviving but how fun is that? His nation will be in ruins and it would take him forever to get back to some semblance of a status Quo'

Rosa, sounds like fun can i have your save game? ;)

Now im really off to bed i swear, just one more thread!

Hey at least i turned Vicky off!

If you're so blood thirsty....

Why don't you start a world conquest? I wanna to see what you think of world conquest, it's not too hard, fairly easy really, but it's "work" :)

After 1 WC, I changed from war is great to a docile pacifist :D

I cant do a world conquest unless i use some gamey tactics/exploits. Dont like playing that way for some reason. The A.I. is not very smart at times.

Russia and China are the nation i came closest to a true WC, and still there were many patches of free nations that didnt get to experience my big black boot heel of oppression on their neck.

I did once edit the Ionian islands to a population of about 200 million at the get go of the 1836 GC. It was fun until i literally couldnt keep up with em all.

Never even got to expand the rgo's enough to accomodate half of them. I also had max health care. Talk about massive population explosions. Pops were splitting every day it seemed.

my eyes hurt...

what do you mean by gamey tactics/exploits?

China doesn't count, I want you to experience the full joy of Chinese rebellion :D

your eyes are getting very very heavy

Any thing that takes advantage of game mechanics too exploiting the AI's mostly predictable behaviour.

Like uber large hussar armies(300-400k) that swallow a nation up before it can even mobilize. Not very realistic.

Or manipulating manpower to have 300/25. Raping conquered nation's Mp.

So on and So on...

Good night for real :)

That's the deal folks. I got sucked down a death spiral, when I accepted that first Brazil deal - but I couldn't do otherwise, they wouldn't accept any offer for peace, no matter how favorable for them. Or before, when I annexed Egypt in 2 steps but... with 10 provinces in the "2nd step"

My latest game with the Prussian&gang was really fun. I managed to encircle and destroy 30+ of their divisions (completely annihilated them), but they kept coming and coming and coming... After a while and with half my land lost (and them not accepting any reasonable deal for peace, like giving 5% or even 10% worth of land over their warscore) I gave up and I am going to restart the game... as Prussia this time :D That was the thired attempt at the same sequence (loaded previous savegames).

Hmm... maybe I should just neville them... but how fun is that? ;)

Rosa, sounds like fun can i have your save game? ;)

Absolutely! When I go back home I'll e-mail it to you. Just give me an address. I wish you better luck than I had
