It's All Greek To Me - starting nations?

I wonder which country is eligible for the achievement "It's All Greek To Me".

The only greek nation in 1444 is the Byzantine Empire, which should not be able to form Greece.
Naxos, Athens, Corfu, Cyprus and the Knights are all relics of the Crusade Age with a western culture.
Trebizond and Theodoro have the wrong culture (Pontic or Gothic).

When I start for example Trebizond, achievement is not shown as possible.

Is there some culture switch needed? Or did I miss a greek nation, eligible to form Greece? Or do I have to play as released vasall?

According to the wiki, in order to form Greece, your primary culture needs to be Greek, you need admin tech 10, you need to own and have cores on Morea, Achaea, Athens, Naxos, and Epirus, you can't be Byzantium, and Byzantium can't exist.

I've played a game as Venice before and formed Greece with it by Culture switching, idk if it works anymore

2. switching tags from Byzantium to something else, and then forming Greece
3. playing as a released Greek vassal - Epirus, Crete, Achaea, or Morea

Yes, player and AI custom nations are allowed for this achievement. So if you have El Dorado, you should be able to get it on 1444.11.11.

Several other 1.22 achievements are similarly very open to custom nations. Check out the wiki; I've just updated it with that info.

(EDIT: Greece needs admin 10, so, not in 1444 but as soon as you can afford admin 10.)

Doesn't he need to form Greece for the achievement as well? I'm pretty sure he does.

Yes. One of those options is a prerequisite to forming Greece. That's the whole reason we're talking about Greek primary culture.

Forming Greece does take admin 10, so you can't quite do it in 1444 like I suggested.

While it may be pretty cheesy for this one, it's well suited to the spirit of the Laughingstock achievement to trololol a custom nation province snake across two continents. U mad pdx?

Seems like the only way then is to take one of the crusader states and culture shift to local culture, which you can do at once since they are OPMs. That is, unless you find that too cheesy, of course. It's obviously less so than some other suggestions here, but I'm personally rather on the fence about it. However, I can't find another way to do it.

Got this achievement in an Orthodoxomans into Romania into Greece run. Then I formed Byzantium and finished Laughingstock as well. So there are options.

Ok, so if an achievement is not shown in start its still possible to get it, if requirements are met? So for example I can also go for Dar al Islam, when starting as christian and converting later to Islam?

Some are, some are not. Some achievements specifically require conditions met at the beginning of the game, while a lot of others only require conditions at the time of getting the achievement.

General rule of thumb is if the text says "starting as" you can not get it another way, but always check the game files or wiki for clarification

Ok, thank you, that is what I feared. At least, the thread made it as clear as possible.

How i did:
I started as Ottomans;
Conquered the provinces i needed for the achiev;
Release Greek as vassal;
Gave it the provinces needed for the achievement (and the ones on the way to the provinces. Remember, it needs a sea or land connection to the vassal receive the province);
Integrated Greece;
Release Greece again and play as vassal.
Done.

Ps.: Ottomans can't form Greece, thus the intagrate/release.

I've done it with Naxos by culture shifting and in the same occasion Athens managed to receive independence support from Ottos.
That's why I guess the easiest way to do it now is to play as Athens, get support independence from Ottos and try to keep them as allies as long as possible. Attacking Venice for Crete and fabricating claims on mamluks only to attack them while they are at war with the Ottomans can stop the Turks from expanding too wildly. Stay catholic and gain alliances before betraying the Ottos for the provinces needed for Greece. Stopping them before they reach Palestine harms them and gives you a decent trade node in Alexandria and one extra missionary thanks to the conquest of Jerusalem. If you shift to Orthodox, ally Russia and form a strong block against Ottos.

Pre 1.22.1 you could just make a custom nation with all the required provinces and greek culture and after reaching adm 10 form Greece and walla, Paradox did of course patch this out so I would say the Ottomans tag-switching would be your best bet if you want the achievement easily.

i did it by starting as ottomans, culture shifting to syrian, forming arabia, then culture shifting to greek and forming greece.

Clearly the way to do this is to be Serbia; push back the Turks; and form Greece by culture-shifting from Serbian.

You get some pretty sweet NI's for doing so; while being rightfully Orthodox!
