If possible I'd like to play as the Duke of Franconia, or should I choose a duchy closer to those of other players? So we're having our first session next Sunday (New Years' Day) right? What about house rules?

No, not really. I am actually thinking of maybe choosing another duchy, somewhere a little deep in the Balkans so no one accuses me of trying to build a huge empire in central Europe so early on in the game.

Hmmm, lets try another ground rule. No starting as Uber Duchies. IE Baghdad, Thrace, Alexandria, Venice, Genoa, Ile de France, Peryslavl, etc.
Probably should limit yourself to a duchy with a "Yellow" provice. No higher.
The idea of only grabbing county titles and having to Usurp Duchy titles seems like a good one.

Rather little. Tech will spread to provinces of the same culture faster and provinces of the culture of their ruler will convert faster if a differnt religion(Matters little in this scenario). Other then that its purely astetic.
