I was just curious why when you form Italy they change to a Monarchy. Why doesn't the nation just keep it's old form of government. I understand why it would change to a Monarchy because of their Idea's, but can't they just remove the Monarch central idea's and just replace them with other ones. I really like playing as a republic, but never have really tried playing in Italy because I never can stay a republic when I form Italy.

Yea, it this kind of major railroaded non-optional boring stuff that destroys the sandbox which has been what I've been loving about EU for about 15 years of playing. Atleast there could be a bloody option, couldnt it? I thought alternate history was one of the points of this game. If I play Venice and forms Italy or plays the Hansa and form Netherlands, atleast I would like to have an option to keep the lovely merchant republic or whatever existing government you like to play.

Except you don't have to - theocracies will remain theocracies when forming Italy. It's just republics that become monarchies.

I used to really like theocracies but they ate a big relative nerf :(. I just wish more formables gave you a republic; there are precious few of those.

Same with the bloody ideas, for RP reasons mainly.

Local autonomy was introduced, and in terms of reducing it, theocracies are roughly as good as tribal federations, except you don't even get a decision to reform naturally.

You could say the same of merchant republics. How does Admin ideas not have a -autonomy idea anyways?

Merchant republics make so much money that you could give them the celestial empire LA floor and they'd still be pretty damn strong. Taxation (which is what really gets hit by LA) rarely accounts for even 10% of a merchant republics income.

Actually, LA directly impacts forcelimits and everything else from a province too. At 100% autonomy, you have 0% of most things and 50% trade power. Merchant republics do have the option to switch out later though, and can rake in a ton of cash early, so are much better than theocracies.
