Chapter X
Holy Intervention

The effects off the battle of Genoa could still be seen in the city. Holes in the blackened walls, buildings in ruins, some of them still burning, corpses in the streets and an unnatural silence. Both the Milanese and Savoian armies were camping in the outskirts. Only two figures seemed to be alive in this sea of death, walking through the roads of Genoa.

“Well, what do you think of our triumphal parade across Genoa, dear duke Visconti?”

“I see it more as a recount of damages and an estimate of casualties, a thing that any of our officials could do. I would rather be really celebrating back at the camp, where I’m pretty sure the soldiers are having a great time with all the goods they looted. I think as well this is dangerous, as we have no escort and people could see us as a tempting target.”

“Come on! They are too scared to even show their face, do you think they would attempt to attack us? If they do we’ll defend ourselves, they are finally just peasants. Now stop worrying and let’s finish our little trip before we get back to the camp as we suggested.”

The two victorious leaders kept walking through the devastated city, pointing out some reparations that should be made, Ranieri wanted to rebuild the city and make it the port where the Savoyard Navy would be born. He also stated he would put a statue of him in the center plaza of the town, so every citizen of Genoa could see their new ruler and liberator. However, a there was a little surprise waiting for them in the south of the city. A dozen of Milanese soldiers were hanging naked from the walls, with a message carved upon their chests: “Beware little bird and bearded duke, for this could be your destiny if you are not careful. The bulls are watching.”

“I presume we should fear them, whoever they are” said Ranieri smiling.

“Right, especially since they are probably dead” responded Visconti raising his eyebrows.

“Oh dear duke, I doubt that a group of men would take the time to hang a dozen bodies if they were fighting for their life. I’m sure they managed to escape, but still, our informs report that we practically annihilated the Genoese army, so if a group of any kind managed to escape, it will be a small and insignificant one, so there is no need to worry” concluded Ranieri, patting his companion in the back.

“I never said I was worried.”

“Yeah, whatever, let’s get back to the camp, so we can celebrate as you said.”

“All right, just tell someone to put down those bodies and bury them with the rest, I don’t want the rest of the troop being upset for something like this.” Said Visconti sighing, at the sight of Ranieri laughing once again.

The rider crossed the gates of Rome at full speed; he had been instructed to give the message directly to the Pope. Cardinal Canciani had given him his ring for that purpose, so he wouldn’t have any trouble. He had also stated it was urgent matter, so he should arrive as soon as possible.

After moving quickly through the crowded streets of the Holy City he arrived to the heart of Rome, where the Pope resided. He dismounted and gave his horse to one of the servants that approached him. A soldier asked him what his business there was. The messenger said he had a message for the Pope and we would not hand it to anyone else. The guard was reluctant of letting him pass, but after he had shown the Cardinal’s ring, there soldier let him pass. He was conducted by other soldier through the infinite corridors of the Papal residence, why looked more as the house of a prince than that of the Vicar of God.

They finally arrived to what seemed to be the Papal Library. The soldier made a gesture with the head and the messenger entered. Pope Carlo I was sitting next to the window, reading what seemed to be the Decameron, by Boccaccio. Even since his times as an ordinary priest, more than twenty years ago, he had been a fervent reader. His real name prior to his election as Pope had been Mario Griffini. He’s physical appearance resembled more that of a soldier than one of a Church man, he was often nicknamed “The General” because of this and the insistence of always leading personally the Papal armies. He had succeeded Pope Gregory XII seven years before after the sudden dead of the latter.

He didn’t notice at first the newcomer, so the messenger approached. His Holiness finally realized someone was standing in his library and raising his head, he looked the messenger.

“What is the business that brings you hear, son?” he said rather coldly.

“I bring notices from Cardinal Canciani” responded the messenger.

At the mention of the Cardinal’s name, Pope Carlo stood up almost automatically. He approached quickly with interest, the coldness suddenly vanished.

“What are the most recent news from Milan? Is there any development in the war against Genoa?”

The messenger handed the Pope the message he had been carrying for almost a week. The General took the paper from his hands and quickly tore the envelope. He read with anxiousness muttering some phrases to himself.

“So you are not stopping dear Visconti” he said after a while. “I have already warned him, it’s time to take some more serious actions.” He took a quill and a paper from his desk and scribbled something. He put it in an envelope and sealed it with the wax of a candle and put the Papal seal from his ring. He finally handed it to the puzzled messenger. “Please give this to Cardinal Canciani, please make sure no one else finds, this is of vital importance for the survival of a free Italy. Go now! There is no time to loose.”

After the messenger had exited the room, the Pope called one of his assistants. “Umberto! Come here now!”

“Did you call me your Holiness?” Umberto was one of the most loyal assistants of the Pope, he had been in his service for almost thirty years.

“Yes, I need you to gather the Council, I must discuss some important matters with them, specially ending the war with Naples as soon as possible, there are some things that require more attention right now.”

“What should I tell them?”

“Just say that I need to talk with them to discuss among other things, the excommunication of Filipo Visconti, Duke of Milan and Ernesto Ranieri, King of Savoy. Tell them is urgent.”

...I'm beginning to see what exactly the Bulls will be doing in the future. :D I really can't wait.

This update really wettens the appetite, I can't wait for more :D

That priest should never have become Pope if he dares excommunicate Ranieri!

I say the Papacy has been soiled with the secular needs of greedy men. We should fix this at once! ;)

And the Bulls?! What kind of name is that! Should we get some spanish "Matadores" into the Savoyard army? :p

Laugh while you can, Ranieri. Eventually, it might be you hanging from that wall. ;)

If anyone would do, Carlo I would be the kind of Pope I could see getting in touch with the 'Bulls' sooner or later. Then vengence will be taken upon the Savoyans and Lombardians...

I caught that while reading :D

Anyways good update! I wonder what will happen now. Too many variables so that things turn out all right.
