This is unreal, I checked the aar this morning before going to work. I just got on after coming home from work and find two pages to read. Aaarrghh!

What amazes me even more, we are double the replies over Ariel's aar, but he still has triple the number of views. Doesn't make sense. I love reading Ariel's, but his updates are way too far apart lately. You know, that is beginning to feel that way here too. (hint, hint)

unlike ariel, im here and ready to do an update whenever the recent events (trial) have been finished then ill do the update on the rest of 1566.

I have also thought how is it possible ariels england thread had so many views, when i started this aar he had i think 13000 views if i remmeber right, within a month it jumped to 30,000, either his aar was an extrememly popular read or someone got drunk and pressed the F5 key one too many times.:D

I hope he keeps that aar going, such a great aar unfinished would be a shame.

Well, let's get the damn verdict out, so we can have our civil war and be done with. After all, I always wondered what a Protestant Italy would do with a Catholic Vatican City in its midst.:D

"Vice-General! Vice-General!", a officer yelled as he ran into the General's tent waving a peice of paper.

"What is it Riccoli?"

"We have just recieved a personal message from the Doge!"

The General sighed heavily and rubbed his temples. "I was afraid of this", he said. "Read it to me"

Several minutes later the General sighed again. "God damn bravado, I knew I shouldn't have spoken so harshly....DAMMIT"

"Sir, what do you want me to do?"

Lomardi thought for several minutes before replying. "Allright, first go track down that messanger who gave you this letter. No one else saw you take it, right? Good. Go track him down, and give him this", The General took out a sack of gold coins. "Tell him to go back to Rome, rough hismelf up a bit, and tell the Doge he'd been robbed and couldn't deliver the letter. If he does this, and doens't speak about it for a years time, well past this crisis, i shall give him two more sacks of gold. I know these messangers, poor guys the entire lot of them, he'll take the offer and he won't speak. If he does....well we'll take care of him before that"

Riccoili looked at the General with a new bit of fear "sir, your devious"

"Don't remind me..I must have picked soemthing up from those damn politician generals the Spanish always had, terrible fighters I tell you. I hate politics, but if I havew to sue a few tricks to get our Commander back, then so be it I guess."

Riccoli nodded.

"Oh yes, one more thing. After youve taken care of the messanger, coem back here and I want to have a message of my own delivered to the Doge. It should smooth things over a bit, I hope"

Letter from Vice General V. Lombardi to Doge By-Tor Xanadu

Dear Doge,
Sir, it is with great saddness that I think back to our last meeting. It was with a clouded mind that I spoke to you in such a bravado, and I fvear the damage I may have caused is irreversable. Should you wish to repalce me from my command, I shall surly understand.

And so, I submit to you, my current orders to the Republican Gaurd. As i write this, the Gaurd has made plans to withdraw from the city of Rome. We shall be moving several miles to the South where I shall have them go through a series of miltiary exercizes and training proceduers that I have long sinse wished to execute. This army shall make no attack upon the Senate, nor Rome, nor the Pope himself. You have my word on this, sealed with my honor.

Vice General V. Lombardi

P.S. I have heard rumors that you dispatched a message to me several days ago. Sadly I have yet to recieve this message. However, I can only guess as to the contents of this message and react occordingly. If my current plans do not fit your wishes, please dispatch another message to me so we can clear up these difficulties.

Riccoli rentered the tent several minutes later. "The messanger has been dealt with, and he agreed to our payment of the gold. Just to be sure that he fullfills HIS end of the bargin, I ahve one of our best spies trailing him...if he shoudl try to betray us, he'll be dead the second he makes that decision. More over, he knows this, and shall be msotl oyal to our plans I believe.

Lombardi sighed, he hated this political actions, but what could one do. "Very good, now have this message sent to the Doge. We will be pulling back 5 miles to the south, and a mile to the west"

"But that will still put us on the edge of the city's zone of control, sir"

"Actually it won't. You see, when the Treaty of Rome was signed, the Vatican feared being locked completely within the city of Rome, and bargined for a gate in the walls as well as a corrdore of control linking it to the rest of the Vatican territory. The gate is rarly used, and has gfallen out of favor amongst traders, but is still official. We're going to be moving justo utside the Vatican zone and, should anytihng happen, we'll move through there. I still pray it won't come to that, but we will be prepared. You'll notice I'm goign to be following my letter by the word officer, by the word"

HOLY LEGION ARMY, ROME

messanger "tribune bragadin, tribune, i have news of the republican guard, they are on the move to the south. We are not entirely sure what there plan is but they have picked up camp and are moving."

Bragadin "Very well, relay to the squad leaders we will be forming up, if this italian scum tries to enter the city and disrupt our operations here we will be ready, i will not let this pitiful general Lombardi off the hook, once the Pope has gotten rid of general McCollum i will have complete control over the country with Pius." looks at the befuttled messanger "now GO!"

messanger "y...yes tribune bragadin" stumbles out "I will not fail the empire my lord."

Bragadin (in a room with some of his runners and colonels) "I need several runners, you will take these letters to the specified senators of the republic."

Bragadin handed the letters to the runners and they hurried off to the senators (forster, gandalf, misha,) the letters read

Now is the time to prepare for your dream conquering the holy lands. The Pope has issued a law of crusade against the muslims, I will lead this charge against the heathens, we will conquer them together. But the republic and its senators stand in our way, you know as well as i do the difficulties of politics, that is why the Pope is driven by the only true force, GOD ALMIGHTY. Forget about general Mccollum and the republic, the doge is weak, the pope is rightfully the ruler of all. Join me and the Pope now, we will rule the Roman Empire together and this world will be ours.

BTW, shouldn't you be presenting yourself to the Doge. After all, we in the Senate have no real power.

Ah, OK. The Seym are a democratic bunch, and assumed that the Senate would be the real power in Italy as the Seym is the real power in Poland.

Pan Sierakowski is a bit more Machiavellian than Onufry Zagloba - as is only appropriate in Italy. He's also no friend of Papal power. He'll present himself formally in a couple of days. I'm off to Manchester IRL for a conference.

HOLY LEGION ARMY, ROME

"That fool, what does he take me for? A common traitor? I cannot believe that he actually thinks I would sell out my own country for some rediculous idea of a new Roman Empire. As if I cannot see right through his words. What he means is that he wishes to replace the Italian Republic with a reborn Papal States."

Senator Gandalf was in the inner (and most spy-secure) chamber of his private apartments in Rome. The court was on recess for the remainder of the evening and Gandalf had been relaxing in his study when his grand-nephew Vincent Gandalf brought him the sealed letter from General Bragadin.

"But Uncle," said Vincent, "I remember from reading some of your famous speeches in the Senate that you yourself used to speak about restoring the heritage of Rome. Undoubtably that is why Bragadin thought he could trust you."

Gandalf smiled weakly, "My dear Vincent, you are right. I did at one time speak of restoring the glory of Rome. But you must understand, that was mostly political rhetoric. I have no desire to see our Republic turned into a new Roman Empire. My loyalty has always been to God, Italy, and the Pope. However, if the Pope wishes to destroy Italy and set himself up as the new Roman Emperor (or more likely, set up Bragadin as Imperator while the Pope holds the actual reigns of power), then I say that he is in the service of Satan not of God. Oh, I do pray to God that this letter is of Bragadin's devices only and that the Pope is not involved in his subordinate's plots. And yet... yet... "

"Uncle, what you speak could be called heresy!"

"Nay, Vincent, I do not yet accuse the Pope. As I say, perhaps this is of Bragadin only. And yet, it would make sense when I see how persistent Sarducci is on condemning McCollum. In fact, it even seems that he is willing to let Sharur off the hook if only Sharur would be traitorous enough to give them McCollum in exchange. I all fits together. This trial is all about removing an obstacle (McCollum) in the path of the Pope's crusade. Curse it! We now stand on the brink of civil war because he was not patient enough to allow politics to take their course. We had a powerful contingent in the Senate supporting the Crusade, and I myself was on the track to potential Dogeship. Now we're flying apart at the seams."

"Civil war, uncle? Surely not?"

"Vincent, Vincent... didn't you yourself tell me that you saw the Republican Guard camped outside the city, ready to strike if McCollum is harmed? And now with Bragadin declaring himself willing to set aside the Doge and the Senate... well, we must do what we can to prevent bloodshed.

"What can we do uncle?"

"We must act quickly Vincent. There is no time to lose. I am still a boni veri so I may yet help this trial to end peacefully. Perhaps if I, and Storey, and Dude (heaven help us  ) are wise enough in our judgments we can appease both the Pope and the supporters of McCollum and Sharur. There is still the matter of Pope Clement's renunciation of Benedict's attempts to assert Papal authority over secular authority. If that precedent is addressed perhaps we can prove that McCollum and Sharur are not so heretical as Sarducci is trying to make out.

However, failing that, we must be prepared for the worst. Firstly, Vincent, I want you to take a letter to the Doge immediately. He must be fully informed of the contents of Bragadin's letter. Furthermore, he must reform the Holy Legion immediately. He must rename the Holy Legion to the Army of Pisa, thereby giving the Doge direct rights of command to the army (since By-Tor is from Pisa), and also thereby disolving the Holy Legion and any rights the Pope has to control of it. Bragadin must be asked to step down immediately, and when he refuses (yes, I say when, not if). Then all forces loyal to the Republic must be moved in immediately to force him to back down. The Republican Guard is already in position. I fear no others can get here so quickly, but we must try. I know the Doge is hesitant to do anything to spark civil war, but if Bragadin is serious about replacing the Repulic with the Pope then we may have no choice. My letter to the Doge will say all this. I will write it this instant, seal it, and hand it directly to you Vincent. My best bodyguards will go with you. You must not be detained and no one but the Doge must see this letter. If you are taken destroy the letter immediately.

Secondly, if it comes to outright battle between the Republican Guards and the Holy Legion I fear for the outcome. McCollum's men are good, but without his direct leadership I fear they will be massacred if they are forced to face the military genius of Bragadin on the field. We must do two things. We must remove Bragadin if at all possible, and we must restore McCollum to his command. Of all our generals, McCollum alone has the abilities to match Bragadin's in the field. I will give you another message to take to Don Forster. Tell him to have his men ready to strike. Bragadin must be incapacitated
by any means necessary before it comes to battle. Also, tell him that if the trial goes against McCollum then we must do what we can to free him and get him to his army. If fear that if Sarducci gets his way in this trial then Lombardi may not hold back, and Bragadin will press his chance to strike (to "protect" the Pope and the people of Rome of course). It would be just the excuse he needs to ignite a coup and overthrow the Republic. McCollum must not be harmed and he must be able to face Bragadin in battle if it comes to that. Perhaps our best option is to have Forster's (and my) men stir up trouble in the mob gathered outside upon release of the final verdict (if it happens to go against McCollum). If we can cause enough disturbance then perhaps our men can free Robert in the confusion and get him to his army. Despite my disagreements with Robert on the issue of crusade, I at least am confident that he is an honorable man and one that is unfailingly loyal to the Republic."

"And Uncle, what do we do about the Pope if all this unfolds as you are saying? Will he not then have even more cause to prosecute even more Senators for challenging his authority?"

"Firstly Vincent, we will pray that it does not come to all this. Secondly, and God have mercy on my soul, it may be necessary to follow the example of King Philip IV of France when Pope Benedict tried to assert too much control over the political affairs of France. He "escorted" the Pope to Avignon, where he could keep a closer eye on him. In other words, my good Vincent; we may need to remind the Pope that it is at the good grace of Italy that he has any semblance of independence left at all under the Treaty of Rome, and that if he wishes to push us around then we can easily remove that independence as well. Oh, God help me..."

Gandalf collapses to his knees with his face in his hands...

"Here I am, plotting against the Pope, and yet I always considered myself the most faithful of Catholics. Nevertheless, I follow God first, and if the Pope is indeed in league with Bragadin's rebellion then I have no other conclusion than that he is not of God but of Beelzebub! My dear nephew, above all pray that this is not true. Pray that when the Pope learns of Bragadin's treachery he will as outraged as we, and will be sympathetic to our desperate actions. Truly, I wish Pius no harm, but again my loyalty is also to God and to Italia."

"I will uncle, I will."

(OOC: sorry for the super long post but I had a lot of ideas to get out. Xanadu, Forster, Meerschaum, McCollum, Warspite, go ahead and run with what I've said. This is what I intend to do about the situation but bear in mind that only Xanadu and Forster will know about this plan at the moment. A lot will depend on how the rest of the trial plays out of course.)

A letter home (1)

In the early hours of the evening, after a long day’s travel, the peripatetic ambassador sits in his reasonably comfortable room in an inn, wondering why none overlook the Arno. The bath was satisfactory, the food good, the wine reasonably so. At that thought, the ambassador suffers a twinge of conscience; but if the Padishah can imbibe that drink, so surely can he, especially as the sources of good clean drinking water in Italy appear extremely limited. It has been a pleasant few days, and he has enjoyed his few days' break from his duties, but that will soon change.

“To my darling wives and beloved children, from their devoted husband and father, love and prayers that this finds you in good health and happiness.

We left Rome six days ago, and arrived in a town (village really) called Assisi four days ago, making good time. Though the roads were difficult, the weather has been good. Assisi was a most interesting place, the birthplace of a holy man they call Saint Francis, who reputedly talked with animals. Knowing that such people exist back home too, I cannot be too critical, and in any event, it appears that he was a good man, and kind to many. Assisi itself is in an uninteresting town amid the scrub and trees on a hillside, but has a most remarkable basilica (a sort of mosque for the christians). A number of the interior paintings are by a man called Giotto. The paintings depict human forms, therefore they break Allah’s law, but I must admit that I was moved to wonder whether that restriction might not occasionally be relaxed.

We stayed in Assisi for two days, and I took some marvellous walks in the countryside.

From Assisi, we moved to Florence, another journey of two days. I cannot say much about the city, for we have only recently arrived. However, it appears to be a most grand city, with marvellous architecture and of great wealth. The people here remind me a little of the Galata bankers back home, but money is the lifeblood of this city. I am told that there are some wonderful jewellers here, so expect some gifts with my next message! After staying here for a few days, I had hoped to go to Pisa, the Doge’s home city, and thence back to Rome, but the situation in Rome now really requires my presence as you will see.

Of course, as I travel around Italy, I cannot help but think that, but for the Conqueror’s (may he rest in light!) untimely death in 1481, this might all have been Ottoman territory. However, I must admit that the Italians have flourished under their strange government. I do not know whether to be glad or not – as you know, my task here is merely to preserve the peace – but their present situation appears to be most dire. I am constantly thankful that the Abode of Peace is ruled by the wisdom of our blessed Sultan and the diligence of my uncle, with no contrary authority.

As for why I have to go to Rome: a new ambassador has arrived, from Lehistan. His name is Pia Zadora or something, but my messenger may have mixed up the names. I need to be there before he stirs up any trouble against us. I am extremely surprised that a nation as xenophobic as the Poles has finally drummed up the courage to visit foreign countries. No doubt he arrived complete with a retinue of several hundred cavalry; I am only grateful that he cannot have much money.

Do send me word of any interesting developments back at home, and especially whether my uncle is pleased with my performance. I miss you all terribly, my darling Ayse, Fatma and Gülbahar; and also my beautiful daughters Yasemin, Gülhan, and Hayrünnisa; also of course my strong and handsome boys, Mehmet, Ali, Veli, and Yavuz. I wish you could be all be with me here, but Italy is not a place for modest women, nor would I expose the children to the danger.

I remain, for ever, yours in love, and may Allah preserve you until my return.”

The ambassador folds and seals his letter, and moves onto the next.

A letter home (2)

“To Sokullu Pasha, Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire, from his most humble and devoted servant, Emre, by his favour made pasha, and whose life is spent in ceaseless thanksgiving for his Highness’s many kindnesses. I pray to Allah this letter finds the Abode of Felicity in the throes of joy!

Uncle: A new ambassador has arrived, from Poland, (yes, Poland) which may complicate matters. This could change the mission, so I would be grateful if you would please send me the following:

1. A large troop of janissaries (100 should do);

2. Another large troop of cavalry (at least 50);

3. A military band. These Italians like their diversions, so it can serve a dual purpose;

4. 20,000 gold liras as soon as possible: I cannot support all of these men by myself;

5. Two secretaries.

In the meantime, since we had not discussed this contingency, I shall amend my original instructions, i.e. to preserve the peace with Italy at whatever cost, to include the following:

1. Precedence for His Imperial Majesty’s ambassador over all others. Fortunately, I believe the Pole bears letters of accreditation only from their Sejm, or somone called the Marshal. I cannot believe the Italians will deny me this.

2. An attempt to bring the Poles into our Sphere of Prosperity.

If these conflict in any way with your desires, pray tell me forthwith. Ah, if only we had a system whereby communications between Rome and Constantinople were faster than a round trip of six weeks! At least I am grateful that this new ambassador will need at least six mnonths to communicate with his home!

I end by sending you my prayers for your continued good health, and my due obedience as your nephew and humble servant.

Emre”

The ambassador then asks one of his guards to call an aide.

A letter to the Doge

As his aide enters the room, the Ambassador finishes his last letter of the day. He glances up, and instructs him to deliver these messages to Rome post haste, and that he himself will follow on the next day.

“Your Highness,

As you know, since my arrival in Italy I have behaved with the greatest modesty, as befits the ambassador of the Sultan of Sultans, whom no grandiose gestures can enhance, whose life is blessed by the Almighty, and who is the awe of nations.

However, it has come to my notice that a new ambassador has arrived, from Poland.

I therefore demand, on behalf of my Master, precedence over this ambassador and all others. I shall present myself at Court three days hence, and look forward to your highness’s continued kindness.

I remain, O Doge, Your humble servant and friend.

Emre, Ambassador of Turkey”
