Limit it to 6 settlers/year, b/c that's all you can get anyway.

Maybe to England, tho I still think that England wouldn't have as much of a motive as Spain, who's my number one suspect, or Austria, tho I don't think it was Austria, not enough evidence.

Yes to Spanish assassins

Yes to humiliation

After reading the hansa clue, i have to agree with the above. Granted its not all cut and dry but given the evidence i think this is as good a guess as any. Im like forster, puzzles and riddles and mysteries are not my cup of tea. Now reading a good story, that i can handle:)

I like warspites idea of purchasing settlers, i think before he said we could purchase explorers and stuff but dont need them now. I would say to limit the amount of settlers, bump the price for each to about 100ducats. As it is, we never have much money laying around as it is. we are always buying something in this aar.

In my games i never have enough money, always trying to advance this or buy that. i think we need more gold:D

best of luck Xanadu on your weekend off, dont pull your hair out too much over this aar, might be too much like a real leader:D

**Doge By-Tor leaves the silent sanctuary of his office to address his fellow brothers on his final decision on who the perpatrators were in the most evil act of murder against Italys most beloved man. He spent many hours with the Senators debating who was involved , but even then he had to spend time alone after the discussions to sort out the facts from rumors. He knows his decision is final. He prays that he had come to the right conclusion. Not only does he have to voice his findings, but also give his address to the Senate...which he still is quite nervous about. Total silence falls in the Senate Hall when he enters. He knows the Senators are quite anxious to here what he has to say both about the murder , and his agenda**

Hai..ai..lll...
(clears throat , and takes a deep breath)

Greetings dear Senators, Generals , and statesmen,

I come before you today to speak of two very important topics concerning our beloved country. As the scandal of the murder of the holy Carolus Rex has sent Italy into sorrow , and remorse I belive thru the wisdom of this most reliable , and intelligent Senate we have found our Devils. Though it seems quite a few countries were involved some way or another the countries of England , and Spain were the ones who masterminded , and followed thru with this evil plot. I believe Queen Elizabeth of England was the person responsible for paying for , and arranging all events connected to this vile act. I also think Spain was resposible for accepting the money in exchange for offering there assasins' service. Spain is the one who physically murdered General Carolus Rex.
This is my final and official statement about this murder. What we can do about this is very little at this time , but I give you my word given the right opportunity I will personally see to it that they both feel the absolute force the Italy.
Now onto my address to the Senate. For there are many ,many areas that I must cover in my agenda , and I hope I do not miss any. But if I do please feel free to ask me anything after the speech. First off our military.
I believe in a strong army. They are the ones who hold the ground. They are the ones who can force our enemies to submit. Therefore we must discover new technologies , and new tactics. We also need to increase the number of our ranks. As it was brought to my attention we have no cavalry! (Sorry Senator I forgot which of you said this ) This will not do at all. I must see immediate recruiting of our cavalry thru out our Empire. (game term: all armies around the world should start getting cavalry into the ranks) If my father realized this I'm sure he would turn in his grave. This is priority #1. I must admit I am biased on not supporting the navy. For like my father I don't not like the sea , and would rather spend the time and money on more important things. Besides we have establies ourselves in both North & South Vesspucci. Which brings me to my next subject...Colonization.
I think our first goal is to establish self-supporting provinces in all our gold provinces (game term: get gold colonies above 700 population). From there lets get all non-Eoropean provinces some protective walls so they can defend themselves in times of war (game term: get at least level 1 fortress in said colonies..from there build better def. in the more rich provinces until we cant go no higher due to land tech). As far as where to send settlers I say lets work aour way down the east coast of North Vesspucci. The are a lot of people want to smoke that disgustion plant. Not to mention the furs will help keep our armies warm during the winter. Asia will be our next goal , but I don't think we will be ready while I am Doge. Although I am not saying it absolutely not happen.
Religion..
I detest the heretic muslims. They refuse to see the light , but accept the darkness of falsehood. I decree that absoltely no tolerance towards muslims should be implemented. The other Catholic religions should at least be tolerated.
(Warspite..I already posted my policy earlier on this. I know you have seen it so that should work :))
Wars..
Although Spain , and England are resposible for the murder of Carolus Rex , but we cannot act on it now. Although our people will stand behind us we just emerged from a very long , and deadly war with both of them. Their time will come , and I say when it does we torch their TP's , and rightfully acquire the North & South Vesspucci colonies (hopefully geting a couple of colonies from each in peace agreeements). It would be very had for us to take them both out totally (game term: total annex) , but we could let them suffer a long and miserable existance by always being ready to save there people province , by province over time.
Allies/Vassals
I think we sure keep our current allies happy. They have been there for us many times before. We own this to them. I do think however we should improve the relations with some small bordering German states (Like Gandalf sugested..Lorraine,Baden,Bavaria). In time I hope we would have improved our relations enouogh to offer , and recieve their vasalage. (game terms: A military alliance with these smaller staes would be nessicary , but those little guys can pack a punch :))

Finally as this statement should be the first to get addressed above all others suggested we should make good on our promise to Senator Storey to rebuild his refinery. Not to mention from what my father had told me he has a knack for brewing up the best wine there is anywhere. Also we should contruct a memorial (game terms: fine art academy) in our capital to give our respect , and love to our fallen brother General Saint Carouls Rex..AMEN. Both of these should be started within the next 3 years.(Could we make him a Saint?..that would be cool :))

I am sure there are other topics that needs to be discussed, but I am extremly tired , and drained of energy due too the importance of the matters of todays speech.

Thank you all for your support , and insight...God bless

**Doge By-Tor unlocks his knees once again to leave for his bedchamber.....what a long day**

--Out OF Character--
Ok now that I am about to nervously click on the post reply button I must say that some other points that I brough up are no more than 3 pages ago. So if there is anything else you need Warspite it could be there. I hope this is enough to get you (and everybody else) thru the weekend.

*Senator Sharur Medaken follows the State of the Union address by walking up to the podium, little black book in hand. After surveying the scene, he takes a deep breath and begins to speak.*

"Esteemed Doge By-Tor, I would like to start by congratulating you on an excellent address. Hopefully we will all hear more of your speaking prowess in the future. I concur with much of what you said, and have only a couple of things to add and differ with.
First of all: the fortresses. I believe that it would be to our benefit to concentrate on massive fortresses in Italy proper, and not in either recently acquired lands (game note: we don't want to fight nationalistic rebels and then have to assault lvl 3 or 4 fortresses if they control the province), or in our colonies (game note: no one will assault those with massive armies any time soon), although I wouldn't mind a mighty fortress in Nova Illyria...
Secondly: colonization. I agree completely with our Doge on the subject of colonizing the east coast of North Vespucci. We have already established one city there, Nova Illyria, and by establishing a large group of colonies there, we will have a strong base in both North and South Vespucci from which to expand (game note: not only are is the US east coast the best place to colonize in North Vespucci if you're not Spain, but it will be a great way to restrict English expansion). Also, I think that funding trading posts in the Indian subcontinent, Indochina, and Indonesia will be a great boon to our country's trad power, especially if we gain a monopoly on trade in Venice to exploit them.
Finally, religion. I agree that we must have no tolerance for those Muslim heathens. I also agree that we must have tolerance not only for our Catholic brothers, but also for our misguided Lutheran and Orthodox friends. However, what if any new sects come to Christianity? We have warned the people against heresy such as Luther's, so more of it should not be tolerated (game note: I believe the only province of ours that will go reformed is Helvetia, and it has a low population). Thank you for your time, Senators.

*Sharur steps down from the podium, looks out the window and the sun, and, shocked, runs out of the chamber.*

Senator Gandalf of Messina rises to speak

Noble Doge and fellow Senators, I can hardly believe my ears. Is it true that we are proposing to do nothing in retribution for the murder of Italy's greatest hero, Generalissimus Carolus Rex? Our wise Doge has indicated that we shall not forget our outrage, and truly we shall not; but think, it will be at least five years, and perhaps many more, until another war with Spain and England arise in which we can seek to extract payment for their crimes. This is too long. We must not allow the memory of Carolus Rex to grow cold in his grave before avenging ourselves.

Now, please, do not misunderstand me brothers. I do not yet counsel war. There are other ways of exacting revenge than through outright force. No, I propose that we tear apart their realms in secret and from within. Among fair Italia's many assets are included men who are skilled at the arts of subterfuge, espionage, and stirring up revolutions. Gandalf glances quickly in Senator Forster the Sicilian's direction. I say let us make good use of these "Family" men to stir up rebellion in the realms of Spain and England. In Spain we may focus on those lands surrounding the city of Barcelona where Catalon, not Spanish, is the primary language. Perhaps if our efforts are sufficient we may even aid in the creation a new state, Catalunya, within the very borders of Spain. And within England? Well, let us see if we can persuade our Catholic brothers in Eire to reject the protestant heresy which the English monarchs have adopted so as to expedite their constant divorces, remarriages, and beheadings with greater ease. I for one would rejoice to see a free, Catholic Ireland, and my joy would be made full knowing the pain and torment it would bring to the murderous bitch Queen of England.

(In game terms: I think if we choose fund several of Don Forster's men to stir up rebellion in these territories long enough for them to possibly declare independence - you go ahead and set the price for this Warspite - then Warspite could go in and raise the revolt risk in these territories manually. If we pay enough money he could set them high enough so that Catalunya and Eire are nearly certain to secede.)

I pray that you, my fellow senators, will see the wisdom of revenging ourselves upon Spain and England in these subtle, "backdoor" ways that will both avoid outright war (and the problem of raising our BadBoy any higher than it already is) and yet will set a fatal dagger at the throats of our enemies, severely weakening them in any future conflicts we may have. I ask you to support me in this and join me in requesting our beloved Doge ByTor to make this a part of his official policy.

Thats a great idea and along the lines of what i mean by game flexibility beyond the program. I will certainly figure out a cost for inciting unrest in another country though such an undertaking should be expensive. How about a collective opinion on the cost of such a measure stated above by gandalf. great idea thanks gandalf

Well that was a great speech if i ever saw one Doge By-Tor. Do not worry, that was perfect enough for me to start on a new update of the aar and get rolling through the years again. Just a couple of notes

One reason this is awesome is how high every doges expectations are when they start out, build this, improve that etc etc. Unfortunately there are limited funds and just like in real life the best layed plans usually go up in unfunded smoke or nations go in debt. All i need By-Tor is a priority list from you because we cant do all those things right away, So just a priority list of your agenda above in simple format would help when you get back, ill still start out the aar again though.

The trial of the Carolus Rex murder is about to end, i will post the results of the Doges answers above when i get back tonight. Ill explain or justify why we would have lost 500ducats (in my mind:) ) or why we would have gained 100ducats. Will be a nice little descriptive of the trial as a whole.

Ok we are nearing 1000 posts, i have no idea if the thread allows for that many, so if the thread is suddenly wiped out or goes to 0 posts or something castatrophic happens, ill just keep going. Lets hope patric has it all worked out so that we can go to 10,000 posts if we want.

Talk to you all after work.

Another reason this is so interesting is your editing of game files for the aar purposes. I dont think that has been done before and it does make things rather interesting. then again the interactive aar and editing thing you started has made me look at this game in a different light. I look forward to the future of this aar like you said by having the ability to alter the aar not only by game terms but also by our own terms, within reason as you explained before. I hope we can liberate hungarian lands from austrian rule and give it back to hungary using this method, also i hope we can buy and excellerate our settler colonization.

Great speech Xanadu, i look forward to your rule, ill help anyway i can:)

senator Chevy Driver steps up to speak

Dear senators....... Friends and our magnificent leader and Doge By-Tor Xanadu

First i wish to address our current situation on Carolus Rex. If the guilty parties are found out, shall we not seek to mend our differences with them? Has not enough blood been shed at the hands of hatred and jealousy? Shouldnt we follow the example of my father (mosquito) and seek peace at last with our neighbors? Have we not enough money in our coffers to gloat and be puffed up with pride, lets not be like the romans who wanted war and conquest, let us be as the italians who seek to live among our neighbors and not ontop of them. When we have peace now, we can acheive great wealth and prosperity and still expand our lands in colonization, war against powerful neighbors will only lead italy deeper into dispair and others will hate us. I call on our Doge By-Tor to seek after lasting peace with all nations.

On the issue of muslims. We have muslims among us now mind you. The people of Tangiers are surely to rebel against our new rule over them if we persicute them. I beg of our great new leader, By-Tor. Do not distance italy from our link to the atlantic, we need tangiers as a healthy vassal to put our ships into on the way to the new worlds. If we persicute muslims they most certainly will persicute us. Let us show the world we are prepared to be leaders of men and not of war.

I am for peace with all muslim nations. You may ask, how could such a loyal catholic man be at peace with heathen muslims? Well i tell you friends, how can a man of christ be against any man. For he who casts stones must be prepared to have stones cast upon him. Let us seek peace and friendship with the muslims and then god will show them the greatness of his chosen people in italy and they will turn from their ways surely.

Ok i have said much, ponder on what i have said, and let me know what you think while im in my new office in Rome. I intend to approach the Pope with current concerns also. I am considering service under the Pope as a cardinal and i ask for blessings from my friends and the Doge.

May our God shine on you brethren

Chevy steps down from the podium and slips and falls, cracking his head on a chair he begins to bleed all over the floor. In shock and amazement senators scramble to help the great peacemaker. It is senator Storey who comes to the rescue bringing spices from south amerigo, a powder he pulls from his sleeve storey sprinkles on the wound on chevys head and has chevy sniff some and suddenly the wound stops bleeding and chevy feels no pain, with a huge smile the injured chevy springs up like a new man and skips to his office singing along the way. suddenly other senators flock to storey, they call him the medicin man and he is showered with money for his new powder.:D

THE CAROLUS REX TRIAL

The last day of the trial was absolutely perfect weather in Rome. Senators and diplomats, bankers and lawyers and scholars and judges filed into the large court of Doge By-Tor. The fresh ornamental paintings on the walls and cielings just finished by Michelangelo was simply breathtaking.

With diplomats from all other countries also present, the last bits of evidence was noted. Senators gave their final opinions to the Doge and the room was rarely out of control with discussion or arguement thanks to By-Tors loud booming voice that would shut off any confusion.

As the sun began to set on the long day and By-Tor made careful calculation of all the evidence before him. He finally stood before the court and made his findings final.

The diplomat of england shuddered with the sound of By-Tor calling his Queen the guilty monarch responsible for hiring the assassin. He stormed out of the court.

The diplomat of spain also followed with the palatinat diplomat as By-Tor charged Spain as the country who provided a worthy assassin for the job.

By-Tor then commanded that messages of war be sent to Spain and England but after about two weeks time By-Tor was given news that Spain was pleading for peace and offering to help pay for the investigation costs and give a tribute. Queen elizabeth also when faced with another war knew she had been caught and offered peace and reperations for the crime.

Though both monarchs did not openly admit guilt, their offering of money was proof enough and so the 500ducat bill for the investigation was payed for and an extra 100 ducats in tribute given to Italy.

WEll done By-Tor and the senate , you solved the mystery of Carolus Rex murder. was an interesting little plot while xanadu got his political game plan in order.

And now the rest of the story

I too will be gone for four days, starting Monday., this time for work. Try not too add too many pages this time, PLEEEASE!

Sen Forster rises:

That we would allow the perpertrators of this deed to walk freely is a crime against our greatest hero. If we can not yet fight those responsible, then we should use all the economic means that we have available. Let us at least embargo the English bitch and her Spanish dogs. Let us incite the natives by providing weapons and spread false rumors so that the natives living where these so-called civilized nations have trading posts and colonies. Let us give money to those who are at war with them. When we decide to finally fight, let it be on our terms.

Doge, you can not slight the navy. Without it, we can not move troops, and we are always open to invasion or interruption of our supplies and trade. We must be able to defeat our enemies at sea as well as on land. Do not let your dislike of the sea leave us open to disaster.

Sen Forster sits.

RED LION INN, ROME

Forster sat dressed like a commoner (to disguise his identity), with two of his loyal men just outside the front door of the inn. It was a beautiful sunny day. Forster wanted to just take in some sun and relax after a brutally boring murder trial of which he slept through half of. He never was big into that mystery nonsence not to mention politics of Rome. He just wanted his piece of the pie and so at his normal spot at the inn, he chatted with his best men in their native sicilian tongue that no one around them could understand.

Commoners walked by oblivious to the senator. Forster had his wine from home atop a barral next to the table, along with his pipe and a log. The view of the commoners district and Pio cannal was nice from the inn and he relaxed with not a care in the world.

That was until his messanger from sicily, Guido came to his table with his normal hobble and bent over with a bad hunch back.

Guido "mr master mr master" he said hurridly in sicilian

Forster "what... what are you doing in rome guido, whats going on in Palermo?"

guido "sir i have a message from the family, this is urgent i come without letter but instead i have it hidden in my brain , see"

Forster "guido cut the bull, whats going on"

guido "he he master, a diplomat from spain came to the family ear (family messanger and spy) in the pub in Palermo, the ear was given a letter and instructions to take it to the family. and so the letter was from Duke Fernando in madrid. He is offering a gift to the family if they do what he asks."

Forster " well get to it man, what did the letter say"

guido "H he said. He wants King Felipe of spain to be assassinated by the year 1565 before the king marries into the austrian crown and before the king gets an heir to the throne. With Felipe dead it will be Duke Fernando in charge of the regency and he would rule the country. He is tired of spanish odds with Italy and he has family in sicily also that want an end to hostility with Italy. He offers the family, if the job is done right. He offers to you the governance of malta however it would remain a spanish territory yet be the property of the family. He suggests this might further unite spain and italy as his hope is for future peace with Italy. "

Forster grimaced at the news, his men anxiously waiting for forsters decision. He turned back to guido, who was drooling on forsters shoe while hunched over.

Guido get your saliva drippen flapper away from me, now go back to my estate here in Rome, i will meet your there tonight and give you instructions and an answer to give to this Duke Fernando in madrid.

Guido " y y y y y y ya ya ya yes mr master , right away he he he...

your move forster ;)
