Dead Doge,
A quick look at the map tells us two things. First off, that the people of Napels are still under the yoke of the evil and decedant Spaniards, who should be considered our number one enemy. The second thing that can be discerned is that Austria is a growing power in Central Europa, and also hostile to the goals of our fair government and people.

There for, it is the segestion of this humble senator to begin the construction of a strong alliance which would allow us to better counter the aims of both these nations. Our money could best be spent to attempt to turn the hearts of either the Polish or the Hungarians to our side, to better depfend against Austrian agression. Also, at the same time, we should strive to join either Portugal or England to our side. If such an alliance could be created, we would be able to threaten mainland Spain with our French allies, as well as their New World colonies with the Portuegees or English. The addition of eithe Hungary or Poland is self explanitary, and would also act as a buffer against the Infidel Turks who still lurk in the Balkans.

This will, of course, drain our coffers, and so I beleive that exploration should be continued, but at a slower pace than many of the other nations. Our armies, although defeating the Pope in the last war, could have faired better, and it is my opinion that more money should be put into this vventure. Expecially if we one day hope to liberate the people of Napels or those fair Italians still under the Austrian yoke.

In closeing my proposal is to turn our resources to diplomacy and the military, to attempt to suround our enemies and tbe able to exploit it. Although exploration and colonization is important, we must first become the masters of our own home before we can expand into others.

Senator Daniel of Ravenna

Respectfully agree with Senator Daniel.

We may yearn for the unity of Italy, but the rest of Europe have no reason to do so. At present, all save for France hate us. If we make war on Naples, and Spain joins Naples, they will fall upon us like wolves. To say nothing of the Turks.

We must have allies if we are to survive. France can balance Spain. Hungary can balance Austria. Hungary and Poland together would be even better. It will take time and money to make them view us with affection, but that muat be spent.

Also: the Portuguese are great explorers. How much do we think it would take by way of financial persuasion to turn them into sufficntly firm friends for them to show us their maps?

Well senators, seems most of you stayed home for this meeting. Bummer, I thank senator Daniel for his interest in improving the Republic, (helping in my aar also) If there are no objections by tomorrow upon the close of this senate meeting, Italy will embark on the wise policy of mending wounds it has caused in europe. Naples will have to wait and Italy will solidify its hold on savoy, styria and papacy states. expect revolts and maybe invasion, but we will be prepared.

If there is money left over, we will continue our explorations, however it appears no senators in this meeting care to voice support for continued exploration. perhaps we should scrap the idea as portugal and spain have a monopoly on the ocean?

speak senators of what to do next, doors close early tomorrow.

Doge Piero Soderino

With your leave, mighty Doge:

Might I suggest that Senator Roberto has spent too much time of late drinking drinking warm beer with the suspect ambassador from England (indeed, my spies in our capital have assured me of this . . .).

Pay our noble Republic's hard earned gold to an ally of our most hated enemy SPAIN? That would be madness! Why fund an enemy's armies, navies and explorations? We might as well pay the assassin who slits our own throat? Besides, it is my experience that the Portuguese will never voluntarily exchange maps with another nation until such time as that nation's own discoveries rival theirs. This is unlikely to occur in the near future.

Better to exchange discoveries with nations such as Oman, Persia, and the Mameluks. They are more likely to deal with us.

Senator Roberto's drunken ramblings, however, have served as the seedling of a more sinister possibility within my (admittedly ambitious and deceitful) mind. Why incur the time and expense of our own explorations, when the Portuguese's efforts of many years are simply there for the taking? The Portuguese armies are notoriously weak (some say that Oporto's sugary, fortifed wines have led to an epidemic of gout among their infantrymen) and given their alliance with Spain, their central provinces are likely under-defended.

Besides, the Portuguese are a smelly, verminous and barely-civilized race. Need I remind you of the egregious behavior of the Portuguese ambassador during Senator Carolus Rex's last ridotto (my spies in Milan inform me that the ambassador even had the audacity to relieve himself on a statue of your Highness' late father . . .)?

In my humble estimation, a simultaneous, two pronged amphibious assault on the Portuguese capital and Tangiers would accomplish two highly desirable outcomes for us. Firstly, by seizing Tangiers, we will have established an ideally located naval base - being on the shores of both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean - for our exploration efforts. Secondly, if we seize the Portuguese capital - we will have seized their maps of the world as well. Furthermore, the capture of their capital would seriously incline them to our way of thinking in any peace negotiations. We would, of course, demand Tangiers.

True, the inhabitants of Tangiers are heathens and prone to rebellion. But, our republic has cruelly scotched rebellions before. Indeed, with enough of these foiled rebellions (perhaps subtly assured by lowering our tolerance threshold for the despised Mohamaddans to zero), I would wager that the population of Tangiers would soon be lowered to the point where a team of Rome's crack Jesuit missionaries could soon convert the local populace to the one true Church.

Yes, Portugal is an ally of Spain. That could easily mean war with Europe's most powerful nation. But, other than her loathed vassal, Naples, Spain shares no common borders with us. Thus, it is unlikely that she would send any troops our way. I would argue that it is more likely that our French allies will feel the brunt of Spain's wrath. As for a war with Naples, well, why delay the inevitable . . .

If we declare war with our two armadas off the coasts of Tangiers and mainland Portugal, the war should be swift and successful.

If, however, your Excellency is concerned over the instability that might result from a declaration of war against a member of the same faith - we could probably incite the blundering Portugese to make this declaration of war for us, by initiating a trade embargo against them perhaps coupled with a sharply worded diplomatic letter or two that expresses our Republic's dismay at the licentious behavior of the Portugese Queen in the arms of the Spanish ambassador (which my spies in Portugal also assure me of . . .).

If this modest plan is to be acted upon, however, might I also suggest that steps be taken to secure the good graces of the Morrocan Caliphate and possibly invite them into our alliance. Their forces are many, and all assistance against the Spanish threat should be explored . . . even among the Heathens.

Accordingly, I call for a few years of peace during which time we prepare our twin armadas of destruction - then war on those arrogant knaves from Portugal!

Oh, my liege. Might, I make one other tiny suggestion. We have among us in Styria several excellent practitioners of the art of torture. We would gladly offer their services to those of our former generals who foolishly attacked balanced Papal forces in our last campaign without the benefit of cavalry support.

Long live the Doge! Long live the Republic!

Acting Senator Meerschaum of Styria

(Sadly, our former Senator is suffering from a rather severe case of poisoning . . . er, . . . I mean food poisoning that came on shortly after attending Senator Carolus Rex's recent Ridotto in Milan. Rest assured that we have spared no expense on his treatment back home in Styria. Indeed, he is receiving the attentions of my personal Barber, Lupo "the Careless" Callebresi.)

My dear fellow senators,

I pray you will excuse my absence from the former meetings but urgent and grave problems concerning our family interests required my continued presence in Sienna.

I must say I am delighted with the outcome of our war with His Sanctity the Holy Father : for too long now has He interfered in wordly affairs as witnessed with this so-called treaty of Tordesillas. I would suggest we encourage Him to step down and let into his office a more spritually-minded successor. One of my nephews joined the Franciscans a number of years ago, not being business-inclined, and he has risen into their ranks to a position of some responsability; he is not so much interested in politics but rather cares for the well-being of his fellow men's souls so he would be well suited to such a task.
Indeed it was he suggested a use for all these emigrants flocking to our docks : our islands in the Mediterranean are mainly peopled by these heretics who consider themselves the only true Christians and he considers - and I agree - that it is a disgrace for us to harbor these Orthodox among us. So why not increase their taxes (game-wise : lower tolerance towards Orthodox Christians); If they should revolt, then crush these ignorant peasants; when enough of them are dead we should be able to replace them with true Catholic italians (game-wise : when population gets below 5000 send a settler and convert them). Although in the short term it may lose us some taxes, in the future it should spare us a lot of grief as our nation will be united in its beliefs.

On the foreign front I think we should be really careful. As our spies and diplomats noted, everybody hates us except the French. I expect the latter do not so much love us as they like to have a target for Austrians should war erupt there, as the Emperor is more likely to try and assault Milano and Venezia than french provinces. I agree eventually we will have to liberate the Neopolitans and Sicilians from the spanish yoke but I think it would be wise to wait and see if we cannot get the Hungarian King to recognize our sovereignty : it would absolutely not do to have the emperor absorb them into his empire the way he did with the Bohemians. I also think it would be wise not to enter into military adventurism as some of our new provinces may well still be restless (which provinces are national italian provinces and so not susceptible to revolt when they are annexed ?). Ithink war will come to us without any intervention on our part : the french are too restless to stay at peace too long and we can then take the opportunity to strike.

Apart from that, I would suggest we should perhaps try and see whether we cannot improve our armies somewhat. Although our siege engineers proved their worth during our recent conflicts, the same does not hold true for the rest of our troops and we should be careful not to let the Emperor's soldiers to become too much better equipped with the new weapons than ours (after all he does not have to worry about a navy as he has no access to the sea). And by the way, how does our navy compare to that of our rivals (Spain, Portugal, England, France, Turkey, Mameluks), not only in terms of number but of quality ? I have not heard of any naval battles yet, so I am a bit wary.

So speaks Senator Theobaldo Fournieri of Sienna to his peers.

Doge Piero Soderino

Praise the lord for our mighty victory against the false Pope! Regarding the advice of the most sagitagious Acting Senator Meerschaum of Styria. I am hesitant to point out that this young Senator while displaying one of the most original minds in the senate has still to learn the art of being patient. This humble senator has reached his venerable old age by waiting and watching for the right moment to plunge the dagger home or pass the wine goblet. To rashly enter a war with the Portuguese while it is allied to Spain, a country who has a predacious nature, is questionable to anyone with any imagination. It is also questionable to assume that the French will follow us into this war. They are our best of friends but they are after all French! :p If they don't declare war what then. We against the might of Spain? We cast our fate on the storm ridden seas of fate in the hope that the French will be there with a lifeboat? Madness! The Portages are no fools they will not declare war on us so we need to let this plan die it's own quick death.

Senator Theobaldo Fournieri of Sienna mentions a nephew of his that would be a candidate for that most holy position of Pope. I would like to also declare his worthyness for this important position. He is a fine figure of a man with just that right religious zeal that will put the fear of God in the heart of all who oppose us. (He is also willing to follow where we lead!!!)

Senator Roberto makes an excellent suggestion about the need for more allies. We need to look east for our next ally. Might I point to Poland as a possible canident? Large, powerful and on the opposite side of Austria. Any war that finds France and us in a war with Austria and it allies will be fought on our territory. With Poland the battle ground could shift to Austria itself. I suppose Hungry is a possibility but how close are they diplomatically to Austria??

While this diplomatic plan is proceeding it is still of great necessity to continue the economic expansion of our great nation. This would also include exploration. As money allows we should continue to go where others fear to go. I have heard rumors of lands so rich that everyone wears silk. Lands so abundant in spices that the they use them in the food they serve to their pigs! My father who was a wise and rich man once said to me "Go west young man and seek your fortune". Well I thought that he meant the west side of the Adige river. We were young what did we know?

Don't forget our goal is a united ITALY. It is too easy to forget that all we do is to increase our chances at obtaining our goal! And if we can make a profit at the same time so much the better.

I see my time for speaking before this august body has ended so I would like to end by saying that we have all been forgetting about an enemy that has so far not reared it's ugly head. I of course mean Turkey. As long as they are in the Mediterranean we will be at risk. Beware!

"The Senator from Verona sits down to the shouts of approval from the senate."

PS I hope that the most goriest Doge Piero Soderino has not forgotten the promise that his saintly predecessor made to the great city of Verona about the possibility of a refinery being built in the not too distant future. We have selected a site which we were going to name the Loredan Memorial Industrial Park. However renaming it should present no problem. I kind of like the sound of Soderino Industrial Park. It kind of rolls of the tongue in a most agreeable way.

With regards The Senator from Verona

I must thank my wise and elder fellow from Verona for his support in my nephew's endeavour. Indeed in aiming to convert the Orthodox heretics our goal is to provide a better support for our state against the heathen Turks.
In return Iheartily approve of his suggestion to approach the representatives of the mighty king of Poland. Not only would such an ally be eminently wothwhile against the Emperor in Austria but it would be quite helpful in case of aggression from Turkey.

Theobaldo Fournieri sits down after this short intervention.

In the Italian capital of Venice, Jan 14 1514 the doors to the Sala del Collegio opened and the council of ten emerged with new visions for Italy. The senate meeting was complete, smiles and greetings abound as the Doge and his senators walked outside to the Piazzetta where a celebration was beginning for the victories of Italy. The traditional Pope and his religious domination was no more. Rome was going to be rebuilt, this time it would be built Italiano.

Never before has the people of Italy known such victory, prosperity and peace. The popularity of the new republic grew greater still and the walls of division in the peninsula began to crumble.

and now the rest of the story.............

SUMMARY OF 1514--1523

After the senate meeting in Venice and the enthusiasm that was created by it. Doge Piero set out plans for solidifying the unity of Italy and keeping the peace. Though riots and revolts occured in styria, savoy and old papacy territories, this was not a big challenge to the ever increasing power of the Italian army.

What did become a problem for Piero right away was the death of the mighty Venetian COT. this caused critisizm against him, so he focused on a policy of exploration. That policy would be curtailed however in 1515 when france declares war on Austria and England and Italy is forced to join (piero would not dare renig on his french friends).
Piero did not want the war, but fight he did and he did a good job of keeping austria advances at bay and out of Italy. Austrian armies were crushed in less than a year and sued for peace, which Piero gave readily.

With the war behind him, another tragidy hit Piero, his money spent on Gradas expedition to the atlantic was lost when Gradas fleet vanished in storms, only a few ships made it back with scetchy maps.

Piero defied senate pressures to improve relations with poland and hungary, Senator Theobaldo Fournieri of sienna lobbied so hard against Pieros current policies that Piero feared he would be kicked out of power. This led to his invasion of Naples in 1516.

Piero finished out his 8 year term in 1517 with stability at zero. It took Ludovico of Milan, a staunch supporter of annexing naples to bring back stability and defeat naples. That victory in naples took Ludovico so long he was austed from power and a new Doge elected

the senate had rallied behind the policies of Theobaldo Fournieri of Sienna. He was elected Doge in 1521 and emediately began persecution of orthodox christians in the island posessions.

Fournieris rule was short and riddled with revolts but he did do a good job of cleaning out the treasury and improved relations with many nations greatly. He also took the revolutionary step of eliminating the traditional papacy in rome and replacing it with the HOLY ITALIAN PAPACY, led by his first appointed pope his nephew (name not know :^)

1523 Doge Andrea Gritti ends the orthodox persocutions and sets a policy of improving relations with others and combating national revolts that began to plague italy and drain the economy.

Here is a detailed report and screenshots, enjoy....

senators please meet in Rome for the rest of the week and debate what Italy should do next with Doge Andrea Gritti.

1514 ECONOMY 49.7 TREASURY 1103 STAB +3
Piero took pressure from all around Italy because he was doing nothing to stablize the failing COT in Venice. This COT was the life blood of the Italian trade empire. So Piero financed an expanded expedition by Garda to follow in the footsteps of the Portugese.

Garda set out to the atlantic with 7 ships and much enthusiasm for Italian glory. everyone thought garda would surpass the exploits of the portugese and spanish but ooooh were they wrong. Atleast for a year garda would sail around the south atlantic, lost. It wouldnt be until november 1515 that the crushing news of his demise would reach Venice and Piero, thankfully after the war in Italy. Italian hopes for exploration and rekindling of the Italian trade empire would be lost for many years to come. It was a sad time for Italian rich nobles and merchants, mainly from Venice.

July 1514 Crimea annexes Georgia and that long war ended.

Italy army reached a tech level of 5 , which would help them in the next few days when in August France declared war on Austria and England joined Austria. This was a war of royal families and it made Piero and many nobles in Italy just sick with disgust. Why fight a war over whos family has more diamonds than the other when they should be fighting for diamonds and land. It was rumored that a ball with French and Austrian nobles went strangely bad a few months ago, leading to squables and eventually insults to the crowns and families. As royal pride must be protected, so war was declared.

None the less, Piero was again pressured to stay out of the war and get rid of the foolish french allies. However Piero had money tied into the french nobles and could not personally afford to lose their trust. So he drew Italy into the war against Austria and england. Senators Theobaldo Fournieri and Storey and Daniel McCollum aggressively ridicueled Doge Piero for entering the war however Senator Meerschaum supported the war as did Carolus Rex of Milan.

1515 ECONOMY 54.2 TREASURY 1311 STAB +3

Feb Hansa and Brandenburg end their war on even terms.

April-- Italies first army of 25/8/4 easily defeat numerous attacks in styria by a total of 25,000 austrian men. After the defeat of the austrian army, Italy layed siege to Vienna.

July-- Some german guy started the reformation of religion, saying it is by faith that men are saved. The weakened pope in rome did little of anything to stop this. Italy led by religious leaders renounced this idea of reformation and began to change the papacy in rome with more strict Italian catholic ideas. Spanish cardinals were cast out of rome.

Also in july a massive revolt sprang up in Savoy they would take over the Italian fortress and raise the flag of Savoy but for only a little while as their revolt would be crushed later that that year.

In Styria in July (busy month) a 55,000 man Italian reserve army was attacked by a regrouped 30,000 man austrian force. The battle was incredibly bloody, austrian soldiers were impailed and hung up on poles for retreating austrians to see, this was done by men of the Meerschaum regiment. that day 20,000 austrians parished and a well disciplined Italian army lost only 3000 men. This victory and the horrible tales spread by defeated austrian soldiers plus the battering of Vienna by Italian troops. Forced Austria to sue for peace. Piero quicly accepted the end of the war however he was emediately redicueled for it because the austrian army was crushed and austria lay naked for Italy to take. None the less , Italy was at peace again and could focus on troubles at home.
france thanked Piero for crushing the austrians for them.

October-- Piero in an attempt to plese his Senator Storey of verona begins building a refinery in mantua.

November-- Styria fortress made to lvl 2 and then Romagna revolts just as Savoy is brought under control. within a month the romagna revolt is obliterated, prisoners sent to styria for torture and nationalistic cleansing.

December-- Russia, Crimia, pskov and moldavia enter war against the golden horde, poland and astrahkan.

January-- The Italian flag is rehoisted atop the fortress of Savoy. The short lived liberation movement there did little to hurt unification with Italy.

July-- France annexes Navarra in their war against England and Austria, (forgot to say earlier that navarra was also in the war ) so now navarra is not in the war and is a part of France :)

August-- Mamelukes give Judea to turkey for peace in their long war.

September-- Piero under increased pressure from senators to act in matters of state such as the orthodox christians in cyprus , corfu, cyclades and crete. Also to restart the italian explorations and Piero also rejected senator Fournieris idea of reforming the papacy.

By October Doge Piero had very few supporters, he had let the chance of conquest in austria slip by. He let huge opportunities for exploration fade away. He refused to tackle religious issues in rome or the mediterranean. he also refused to break from the french alliance and work to ally with Poland.

Fearing he was near to being ousted from power. Piero took action and his friend the general of the HOly army in rome, invaded the kingdom of Naples, who is a vassal of spain. This didnt go over well at all in Italy, the senate, in spain or in naples. Infact the only support Piero got from this invasion was from the french nobles who delighted in seeing spanish supporters taken down. Piero was fast becoming a vassal of france himself and it meant trouble. Luckily the Italian republic was set up that no man could hold the position of doge for more than eight years. So at years end he was relieved of his position and the senate elected a new Doge to continue Pieros war on naples.

Though Piero was fast becoming too pro-french, he did help to further the Italian unity cause. He just began to outlive his usefullness and others eagerly wanted power in the growing power of Italy. Italy if it were to take Naples surely would become a great power in europe.

1517 Economy 53.4d Treasury 705d Stab 0

The senate was intensely split in the elections that december. However it would be the charisma and influence of Ludovico of Milan who would win the position of Doge of Italy.

The siege of Naples began on november 23, 1516 by the holy army. Naples mighty fortress would fall three months later in feb23, a lightning quick siege and one that obliterated the naples army but not their peoples will to fight.
July--The holy army would then carefully begin sieging Apulia. Fear of attrition bogged the army down. Furthermore neopolitan resistance severely hampered the siege until september that year. (((i couldnt even start the siege until sept because two white flag naples armies went back and forth from naples to apulia, so i couldnt move all my troops down to apulia, this is caused as most of you know because when there is a battle all my troop movement is lost, so i start over only to be in battle again by the two little defeated naples units, sheesh what a pain)))

May-- Poland annexes Pskov in their war against russia and allies.

July--Agricultural revolution in Italy gives +1 tax

Sept-- naples resistance is destroyed, all the dirty rats are sent to Styria for torture at Meershchaums hands, muahahaha.
The refinery for senator storey is completed in Verona, it begins to pump out some mighty fine brew that helps lift trade expansion for Italy. Way to go senator!

Apulia holds on agianst the awesome siege power of the holy army.

1518 Economy 55d Treasury 900d Stab +1

The siege in Apulia continues, draging on and on. Ludovico promises naples will be a part of Italy by end of the year....

July-- Revolt in emilia which is easily crushed another revolt that just slows progress and costs lives.

ENCYCOPEDIA PUBLISHING OF CURRENT WARS....
FRANCE IS AT WAR WITH ENGLAND AND AUSTRIA
RUSSIA AND CRIMEA ARE AT WAR AGAINST GOLDEN HORDE AND ASRAKHAN
ITALY IS AT WAR AGAINST NAPLES

NOv-- just after the encyclopedia of current wars is published, to the publishers disgust a new war begins as Persia invades Russia and Crimea.

Doge Ludovico is pressured for not ending the war in naples by years end. He is at a loss as to why the mighty army cant break through the apulia fortress. perhaps because he has forced his commanders to keep attrition to minimum there by having too few men to do the job.

1519 Economy 55.6d Treasury 1020d Stab +2

March-- revolt in nice that is crushed by september
also in march Russia annexes the golden horde and ends that war.

December Hansa and the Order declare war on Poland who is now without allies. Ludovico is pressured to break alliance with france in favor of supporting and beginning relations with poland. However he balks at the chance and Poland allies with hungary instead.

Senators and nobles become fed up with Ludovicos crack war in naples, all year he let foolish leadership continue to siege apulia and get no results. Now he was being told by senators to either finish the job or step down from power or we will force you out of power. It was becoming an extemely tense time in Italy. Ludovico however had that last bit of charm and political pull to get himself out of trouble and last into next year. He said just as the revolt in nice was easily and quickly crushed so the final steps will be taken in apulia and naples will be ours.

1520 Economy 53.7d Treasury 1000d Stab +3
The first part of the year Ludovico vigourously poured resources into apulia army to end the siege. Apulia finally fell to Italian control in March and Italy breathed a sigh of releaf, as did Ludovico.

Naples was formally annexed and its navy of 6 ships sent to admiral grimani in venice. Fortresses in Italy were upgraded as well after the war.

Sept-- a revolt in savoy is put down by 33,000 italians.

Senator Fournieri in an act of aggression in the council of ten, convinced Ludovico , no he basically forced Ludovico to begin improving relations with Poland and Hungary and others. Senators were tired of Ludovico and saw him increasingly as a threat to the stability of the Republic. So it was in classic Italian style that Ludovico was given the cerimonial boot by the council of ten in Venice by the end of 1520. they no longer trusted the man and his charm did him little good now.

Theobaldo Fournieri had won the support of the senate at this point. He had some radical ideas but none the less charged forward to power.

1521 Economy 59.1 Treasury 837 Stab +3
Theobaldo Fournieri was elected Doge of Italy and he continued his policiy of mixing it up with poland and hungary. He also began to improve relations with england, and even turkey.

Jan-- Fournieri put into place the persecution of all orthodox christians in corfu, cyprus, crete and cyclades in hopes of making them catholic. it wasnt the most popular idea among the senators but it was worth a shot.

March-- corfu revolts, again, and again , and then again.

That year riots and revolts sprang up all over the islands. luckily only corfu had orginized revolts that were slow to take control of the island, giving Italy time to deal with them.

August --- crimea cedes kouban and kalmuk to persia for peace, persia was becoming the little powerhouse downunder.

Sept-- revolt in naples crushed

Senator Andra Gritti begins to speak against the policies of Fournieri mainly the persecution of orthodox. Another power struggle begins in the senate.

1522 Economy 59.3 Treasury 1017 Stab +3 taxes collected 217d

March-- ragusa becomes vassal of hungary
may-- emilia revolts but is crushed easily, the italian army split into three groups, the 1st army, savoy army and holy army each of about 30,000 men supported by about 50 cannon are becomming powerful forces.

July-- Fournieri abolishes the traditional papacy in rome and replaces it with his own Holy Italian Papacy led by his appointed pope , Pope Nephew (dont know name :) ) Pope Nephew begins to further persicute orthodox christians and completely banishes german reformists from Italian soil as well as hipociritical spanish and portugese catholics.

The holy italian papacy would try to emerge as a strengthened catholic church of europe, however poor relations between italy and other nations severly hampers the new churches efforts.

Due to the problems Pope Nephew had because of bad relations Italy had. Doge Fournieri nearly emptied the treasury in reestablishing good and normal relations with many countries.

Poland +133 turkey -61 england -26 and others improved also, but still Italy was the badest of all the boys and it would take much more time and effort to normalize relations in europe.

Fournieri would spend the last days of his term beating off another revolt in Emilia which he did without hassles.

In december the senate voted again to elect a new doge due to splits in the council of ten of Italy.

1523 Economy 58.2 treasury 477 Stab +3
Andrea Gritti was voted as new doge and emediately he stops the persicusion of orthodox christians then sends his fleet and army to stop the revolts in corfu.

Once that was completed he reduced spending on the military in favor of beefing up the trade and economy.

This however would begin to haunt his first years of power as a new revolt in Naples went from small to huge in just the year of 1523. Italy literally lost control of Naples due to this revolt which Gritti was slow to react to. Infact he didnt even send an army to stop it because he was in the process of reforming the army.

Though Corfu was retaken and the rest of Italy was at peace. Gritti was under assault by opponents in senate on his handling of Naples. Gritti responded in excuse like fashion by signing a non aggression treaty in Vienna with other nations to improve Italies relations with all other countries (+10 with all random event) he used this proactive event to help him during the naples crisis.

The whole year of 1523 was spent dealing with corfu and the Vienna treaty while Naples went ablaze and Spain was beginning to rear its ugly head in the region once again.

********* thats the end of another 10 year period. i encourage anyone to get involved and tell me what ideas for the next 10 years. i do listen to what senators have to say and sorta put it all together with my own ideas. the game is great fun so far, help me make it even better. BE A SENATOR NOW and have a chance at being the next doge :)

Fellow Senators! I stand here today in Rome, ROME, the birth place and rightful capital of our great nation of Italy. We have come a long way in these years since many of our fathers first signed the treaty which united us. I myself remember the signing well, despite my young age at the time.

A look at the mmost recent maps will show that nearly all of mainland Italy has been liberated from the foreign opressors, which had kept us divided all of these years. We are beginning to take on likeness of our fathers, the Great Romans.

The likeness is staggering, perhapse to much so that other nations have begun to see the same! For, one of the main differances which deivdes us from the ancients is that, while the mighty Roman lion could stand on its own and defeat nearly all who stood in its way, we can not.

Italy is not Rome, at least not yet. Our mighty armies do not yet strike fear into the hearts of all who opposse us, nor do we control the Mediteranian as if it were our own private lake. In fact, as recent reports have shown, the Mediteranian trade has begun to dwindle in recent years. Our life blood is bleeding out into the seas!!!

We must come to grips with what we really are. No reincarnation of the great Empire at its hight, but instead a medium strength power who has managed to unite this fractured penninsula in an amazingly short time using guile and luck. In the process we have made enemies of many great nations, such as the Spanish. We have yet to openly defeat a great nation with the help of an ally, let alone by our selves. With this in mind I give my full support into creating a strong Anti-Austrian and Anti- Spanish coalition! We must, at all costs, gain the Polish as allies and perhaps even the Magyar nation. At the risk is sounding to pro-French in this senate, I would also propose to return them to our fold as well, perhas even the English, though I loathe to say it.

Also, we as a nation, must coem to grips with the fact that we may be running low on resourses, including the capital we so desperatly need! The trade in Venice is beginnign to die, as I previously mentioned, and I do not see a time when it shall return to its former glory. My main oposition to the Franco-Austrian war of several years ago was not siding with the French as some ahve been lead to beleive, but instead the squandering of resources as the Doge refused to capitalize on our victories and liberate Tyrol or other Austrian lands from the Hapsburg Emperor! My friends, we do not HAVE enough to waste.

We must also begin our explorations once again. I knwo that in the past I have spoken with caution as to their effectivness, but now that mainland Italy has been unified, I beleive it would be wise to begin investing in this venture. We have all heard the stories of the fabulous wealth in this new world that the evil Spanish have uncovered? Why should they be the only ones to capitalize on these discoveries? I saw we go out and grab the hrose be the reigns and build up a colonial empire that shall rival the Spanish, giving us the wealth we so desperatly need!!

I believe that I must bring up the topic of our ailing military. Many of us may have been intoxicated by our recent victories, to the extent of over looking the fact that our militaries preformance is sloppy if best. It is surly good enough to sweep up rebel scum, or defend mountian passes, but it seems to be good for little else. I poitn to how the Naplese army was able to pin us down for so long, in thel asr wa,r despite them being in near cosntant retreat and our military having an overwelming advantage in size! We are not Russia, we can not flood an enemy with our young and talented men and hope to push back resistence like a wave.

In closing I would like to point our my sincere approval for the ascension of Pope Nephew the First. I have had the pleasure to meet the boy in the past, and he is surly a deeply intelgent and gift man. The purging of the Churhc of Spanish and French elements has also greatly improved its efficency and, dare I say it, the spiritual purity of it itself. I have also heard of the purging of many German elements from the Papacy, which startles me greatly. I have taken the liberty to reading some of the works to come out of Germany lately and, although many are pure trie, some contain interesting ideas. If I may I would like to submit several such works to the Senate and Doge at our next meeting to show you the enlightenment of these brilliant men. Perhaps it would be to ou advantage for our blessed Pope to impliment a few of these segestions. It may even open us up to an alliance witrh several German states to encircle and crush Austria once and for all, should they see the Great Italian Papacy adapting their ideals.

The senator from Ravenna takes his seat.
