Develop and protect our territories (.:) our : well we're supposed to be Senate members!)

Thats the whole point , it is our Italy. i rule the game, but the senate has a huge impact on my actions in the game. Just as the doge had to also follow pressures from the nobles of the senate in venice and genoa back then in their republic. So please, play the part of the nobles in Italian senate.

Do the nobles want their money spent on explorations?
do the nobles want their money spent on diplomatic annexing of savoy?
do we stay allied to france? or switch to more advantageous ally?
do we attack the pope soon and gain italian soil but risk our necks?
do we risk war at all? or do we expand peacably?

all these questions that come up in any game are at my hands now. i want to see what its like when i dont make the decision, instead you all make the desicion basically and i carry them out. then we see how well i carry it out and the impact, and then we move on, almost like they had to do in real world hehe.

So please, play the part of senate, talk to me, let me know what to do next. ask for details i will give it, you have screenshots of my domaine and allies are listed above, you have story of events past. you have my questions from the doges palace to you the senator how to spend funds and where to go next in the game.

Senate is now in session!!!!

by the way to answer those questions of exploration if italy knows of other lands. the answer right now is NO. Italy has no maps other than that of europe. So we have to explore the ocean and land to start colonizing. I set up a slush fund to feed money into which will pay for explorer or conquistador (250d each) when we want one. So we can explore at any time, just whether or not to spend all the money on it.

also due to the arsenal in venice we get one settler a year so we have six right now, and one each year for now. not bad for italy.

might be a touch into the game for this, but when I needed maps as Venice, I'd get my good buddy Persia to exchange Persian knowledge of the East, then would trade that with good buddy France or England's knowledge of a few American provinces, and would set up a sugar colony in the Caribbean or establish a toehold on the U.S. east coast. It'll serve La Serenissima well.
(It's interesting to note that I've never had a central or south american colony in any of my GCs...hmmm.)

oh, BTW...my senate vote...

Annex Savoy peacefully...once that's consolidated, pick a fight with Spain. France should keep them occupied enough for you to snatch up Italia Meridionale, and in the peace agreement pick up Naples and either Apulia or a part of Sicily (whatever His Excellency would prefer, but this senator insists that populous Naples be liberated from the Spanish yoke). Then the Pope will be flanked.

-Senator Mariani of Ravenna (and Madison, Wisconsin)

Don Loredan, my advice is at follows.

Do not precipitate a war among the major powers. Instead, let us wait, wait for the day when either the French tire of being the protectors of the Pope, or His Holiness himself does not honor the alliance when the French launch one of their inevitable wars. Then is the time to strike and return the capital of the Italian people to Rome! In the meantime let us increase our trade and industries, for is not gold the very sinew of war?

In the meantime we should surely engage one of these adventurers to see if the Indies can be reached by sailing around Africa or by the Western route. We already allowed that good Genoese, Colombo, to slip from our grasp - and see what he has done for Spain! The gold of that vassal of Cathay - Aztecia - already flows to Cadiz rather than to us; let us not be shut out entirely.

Lastly, perhaps we should see if it possible to seize a few provinces in north Africa - Tunis or Cyranaica, say - if they are not allied to strong powers. These could provide us a base for future endeovors. After, did not the real glory of Rome begin after the capture of Carthage?

So respecfully says Magnus, Senator of the Italian Republic.

great italian senators, it seems the vote is split.

***No senators lobby for a major war, i concur with that***

***to build peacably, building economy and or annexing savoy by diplomacy
senators Magnus
Mariani
Fournier
Misha
tend to lean in that direction, hmmm i ponder that option****

****opinions on exploration in foot steps of spanish and portugese****
senators Magnus/mariani/khan
have expressed desire to focus in that direction also

*****small war on a minor nation to gain territory*****
senator Magnus has suggested war on an african country to gain african land. hmmm im not sure about that senator, what about the other senators?

**** senator MARIANI has expressed the goal of taking naples and eventually taking out the papal states possibly****

The meeting of senators is open for one more day, please vote on the course our country will take in the next 10 years before the next senate meets in Florence.

thanks all for participating, hope to see more of this.

Don Loredan

This senator votes for the annexation of Savoy. If your intent on uniting Italy you will have to be patient. You have a tricky situation being in the same alliance with the Pope. This alliance isn't big enough for the two of us. As you know as long as they are allied with France you can't touch them. If they leave the alliance it makes your goal reachable. If you leave the alliance it's too great a risk to hope that France will be distracted long enough for you to conquer all of the Pope's provinces. I think you need to wait and see which way the wind is blowing before you decide what to do after you annex or at least vassal Savoy. The problem with picking a fight with Spain as Senator Mariani of Ravenna( there are rumors that he is in the pay of the Pope) ;) suggests is that the Pope may be the one to grab Naples being closer than we are. Senator Magnus as wise as he is reputed to be makes a questionable suggestion when he points to Africa as a possible expansions route. Keeps your eyes on the goal. A united Italy! Africa could be a great drain on resources and could prove to be an endless cycle of revolts and any move which increases our contact with the infidel is to be avoided.

Hail Warspite,

Very nice AAR. I like the twist you put on the game. Very well thought out plan as far as incorporating senators. This interactive thing is pretty cool. May I add a suggestion from "Senator Xanadu"

Since I believe "our" maps show as afar as just off the coast of Aden & Persia may I suggest that we find our own "silk road" to the Orient without having to cross any of our ememies borders. I think it is time to establish our own fate, and lift ourselves to world leader status. We need to colonize the Orient for there is a greater benefit to our land if we develope others.

Great Senator Xanadu , wisdom flows from your lips sir. I also have a desire to begin glorifying italy by explorations, spain and portugal should not have a monopoly on such affairs. Also our venetian cot is sliding into decline no thanks to iberian explorations.

I am greatly pressured however to act upon the votes of senators and unless votes change by tomorrow, we will begin the process of politically annexing savoy while keeping peace and keeping our allies of france.

Exploration will begin only if there are funds available to hire an explorer. we will also try to gain maps from persia and our friends the mamelukes and maybe portugal our old allies.

the senate meeting ends tomorrow afternoon, please place your votes for the policy of the next 10 years by then. thank you gentlemen.

It would be my advice to stay close to France for the time being. They are one of the strongest powers in Europe, and act as a good buffer against both the threats of Spain and Austria, as well as giving you a chance to strike at Naples and perhapse Sicily. At the same time spend money on annexing Savoy peacefully, building up the tax base in Italy, and sending explorers to these far off lands discovered by Framnce and Spain. Perhapse it owudl be best to trade for the maps of a an eastern nation such as Persia, or even Russia, and then trading to France. I see the mediteranian trade tapering out over the years, you must expand to bring wealth to our nation!

SENATOR BEL'RICK
Formerly of Zeeland

I propose that we immediatly send a letter claiming ancestory of the Papal States.
Then going on the advise of our military advisers we send a DoW to a weak state that we have a CB on.
Call upon our allies in our hour of need *chuckles from the back row*
Then with all predictability PS will dishonour the alliance.

Perfect excuse for the immediate invasion of the popes stomping ground.
Spain is too strong for us at this time yet i feel strongly that the yokes of oppression must be lifted off our Italian mainland brothers!

WAR WITH PAPAL STATES!

Senator Bel'rick sits down to murmurs from his fellow senators

I want to play the senator from florence.

Who besides the greedy iberians in this world really like the pope anymore? I say the italians of the papacy are held hostage under this so called holy mans dictatorship. Now that Italy is united , lets claim the whole of Italy and get rid of the stench of hypocracy (the pope) that should be our first goal, right?

explore too , because we can get lots of money

the senator of florence has put his two ducats worth in.

March- Russia annexes kazan after winning the war there.

August--250ducats are payed to savoy and negotiations with their nobles begin in an italian move to win savoy to vassalization. Savoy relations once poor with italy, now became good +3 so far after 250d

Sep another 250d are payed to savoy this brings relations with their nobles to very good, +166 and a royal marriage is solidified also in october however in november savoy rejects Italys offer to be vassals.

Doge Leonardo finances an explorer for 250ducats, he is Garda and emediately is given a fleet of 4 ships to go to west africa.

Italy continues to put money into the nobles of Savoy but they continue to resist the offer of vassal to Italy, Leonardo and the senators are obviously growing impatient as more than 800ducats have been spent on these ungrateful people. Leonardo sends letters to his senators in the republic, that if savoy does not become vassals soon he will invade them even if they are allies.

August Russia with her allies invade the golden horde that war is long but fruitless for russia.

Italy gives Savoy some breathing room, and negotiates with France to exchange maps, French and Italian relations are blossoming and maps are exchanged giving Italy knowledge of the persians. So succesful was that exchange that Italy does the same exchange with Russia, also a friend. Now Italy has maps of the uzbeks and central asia.

April SUCCESS IN SAVOY The prince of savoy with his nobles agree to become vassals of Italy, celebrations are held in Milano at the estate of Senator Carolus Rex, attended also by senators MANGNUS/MARIANI/MISHA AND GENGHIS KHAN, however it seems the senator COROLUS REX gets extremely intoxicated during the Ridotto and is rumored to have taken an austrian flag and burned it screaming for war while he did so.... needless to say Doge Leonardo did not take the news too well. austrian merchants in venice rioted by the Piazzetta in protest of this action.

HOwever the vassalage went smoothly and Italy began plans for more exploration of the atlantic and africa.

A peaceful year that saw explorer Garda discovering the west african land of Nouakchott but Italy balked on the chance to colonize it as it was filled with angry natives.

The world was at peace since 1504 and Italy was becoming anxious especially in August when the Pope announced the treaty of tordesillas that allowed spain and portugal to attack at will any land outside of europe. This was a disgrace to Italy and Doge Leonardo sent letters to his senators that he intended to strike a blow to either the iberians or the pope himself. He would plan his move though.

Efforts were being made to fully annex Savoy however it seemed impossible at this point.

in november a trade post was established in Nouakchott but fear from merchants that pressure from the spanish or portugese could lead to open warfare. Italy was prepared for it with her ally france who also was ready for a piece of spain.

Leonardo Loredan the magnificent and noble Doge of Italy passed away before the end of the year. elections were held for a new doge.

1509 Economy 49.5d Treasury 702d Stab +3
Doge Piero Soderino was elected he was a master of diplomacy and also well versed in matters of military and admin. so he set out to do some things Leonardo never finished.

First in March Piero sent another trader to Nouakchott, he intended to build a strong trade base there.

August an exhausted Garda returned to corsica with only 1 ship left he had lost 5 ships in exploring. yet he had advanced Italian maps much. He wasnt finished either.

The rest of 1509 was peaceful except for Piero drawing out plans to eventually politically annex Savoy and prepare for the expiration of the franco-Italian alliance, hence, he had a surprise in store for the Pope and his alter boys. :D

Doge Piero and senator Storey met secretly in Verona for preperations of action to take against the Pope in 1510 after the alliance expires.

1510 Economy 49.9 Treasury 856d Stab +3

Piero and his incredible ability of dipomacy is able to convince the nobles of savoy that being a part of the Italian empire , is far healthier than being a vassal of the Italian empire. So in January of 1510 Savoy is officially annexed with Italy. her army of 94,000men pass into Italian hands and her navy also goes to Italy.

Italy military in 1510
Army 90,000 infantry 20,000 cavalry 150cannons no general
Navy 60/43/8 split into two fleets of admiral Grimani of Venice and admiral Lomellini in Genoa.

May disaster strikes the Italian trade post in Nouakchott, natives not only whiped out a 4000 man army but destroyed the post as well. Italy loses its hold in africa. this loss alerts Piero to the readiness of his army, how can his army of men beat trained men of the Papacy if they cant beat naked natives.

August senator Carolus Rex upon news of Austria annexing Bohemia demands that Piero declare war on Austria while the alliance is still alive with France. Piero politely sends a letter back to the good senator and says "the time is not right friend"

SEptember a massive revolt begins in styria. 53000 rebels storm the walls of the Italian strongholds. Out of the gates of the castle comes 45,000 screaming Italian soldiers. A massive pitch battle ensues for 15 days and by months end the field is littered with dead men, blood and guts everywhere, The remaining 30,000 italians take rebel prisoners and make them slaves to clean up the mess.

OCTOBER The franco-Italian alliance expires, Italy emediately sends a diplomat to the Pope declaring WAR. The pope is naked and has no military ally, now is the time to fight cries Piero.

One day after Italy declares war on the Papacy, Italy and France seal an alliance. Just the two of them each with their own goals. Italy wants the Papacy and Naples later. France wants ..... well i dont know what they want :)

April 3 Papal army takes Romagna
April 26 Italian Army retakes Florence sooooo close:)

The Papal army of 30,000 marches to Milan and lays siege to it. Senator Carolus rex is trapped and sends a letter to Piero that he will be lost if Italy doesnt force the Pope to peace soon. Piero is alarmed and personally joins the italian army in romagna to siege it. that may milan is under siege by the pope and romagna is under siege by Italy, the second race begins, who will get who first???? Carolus Rex wants to know:p

August Turkey wallachia and the hafsids invade Mamelukes and hedjaz, that war rages fiercely.

September Italian forces take romagna by storm and the banner of romagna and the pope is taken to the popes genaral in Milan who is then forced to surrender. The papal states are formally annexed that fall and the Pope is allowed to practice his witch craft in a small cathedral in rome.

Carolus Rex holds a second huge Ridotto in Milan, nobles from savoy, venice france and everywhere else join in the celebration, no nobles from spain arrive however. Italy has control over the Papacy and emediately Doge Piero is given power of the Pope himself forcing Pope Drakken to kneel to him. :D (just a joke)

Italy also inherited the popes 30,000 man army and two good refineries. also 14 ships are added to the Italian mighty fleet, now the second largest in the world behind the turks.

Relations with the French ally improve to +108 however the rest of the continent place scorn on Italy for what it has done. All of the hre states and austria, poland, spain, england and others are sending letters of disgust, hatred, preperations of war to Italy for their conquest of the holy Rome. Piero calls upon his Senators to meet in Rome instead of Florence his speech to the senators follows.

GREAT SENATORS, IT IS NOT BY MY WILL THAT WE HAVE TAKEN THIS COURSE, BUT BY YOUR WISDOM AND GLORY THAT ITALY HAS EMBARKED A COURSE OF UNITY FOR ALL ITALIAN PEOPLE.
WE HAVE BEGUN OUR EXPLORATIONS, BUT FOR SURE MORE MUST FOLLOW WE ARE JUST BEGINNING. WE HAVE GREAT WEALTH AND A HEALTHY ECONOMY TO HIRE MORE EXPLORERS TO SEEK OUT LANDS AND COLONIZE. LETS TEACH THE SPANISH THE ITALIAN PRIDE.
NAPLES HOLDS FIRM TO HER ALLIANCE TO SPAIN, BOTH THE NEOPOLITAN CROWN AND SPANISH CROWN HATE ITALY SO WHY NOT HATE THEM TOO AND SEEK TO FREE THE PEOPLE OF NAPLES FROM THEIR SCOURGE. SICILY TOO CAN BE GIVEN TRUE LEADERS AND TRUE LOVE IN A UNITED ITALY.
ITALY HAS EMERGED, WE ARE A GREAT POWER NOW, WHAT WILL BE OUR NEXT STEP SENATORS OF THE EMPIRE? PEACE , PROSPERITY, UNIFICATION, COLONIZATION, WAR, DIPLOMACY????????????

I hope you like the aar so far, please let me know what you want the doge (me) to do next for our Italy.

I hope i carried out most of my senators wishes in this last ten years, honestly i had no idea i would be this successful, i got lucky with savoy annexation and didnt even know the alliance was ending, what a surprise

hope to hear from you , ill take a two day break to hear what senators and well wishers have to say about Italy.

im having a blast playing this scenario out, especially with yalls help. however i seek not only senatorial guidance in strategy, but readers advice on how to make the aar easier to read, more enjoyable, is it too long? too short? not enough detail? too much? etc etc, i want to tweak the aar story to your liking, any tips?

thanks

:) vostok, honestly i am not sure if that was mine or not, i have written several reviews in different websights and have been actively campaigning for europa universalis in my area and internet. Heck i even had a chance to tell about it on a radio program. So i am very happy when others come to see how special this game is, the history, knowledge , enjoyment and community that surrounds it. I hope you find it as great a game as i did and still do. Enjoy my friend :)
