I have two options basically and i need help in deciding.

1. give illyria and money to turkey for peace, lose the war but stop most of the revolting.

2. keep fighting turkey to a white peace at least and continue to fight increasingly horendous revolts and just grit and bear it until we either draw or beat turkey.

I dont know what to do, suggestions?

Yours faithfully, Giovanni

Considering that our RPG actions often affect the game if Warspite edits the game files, howabout a third option:

3. Sign the Freedom Coalition's Constitution to put an end to the revolts and then focus on beating Turkey back out of Illyria

Howabout it Warspite? Is this a possibility?

Giuseppe leaned back and stretched his back. Hours of reading reports had caused his back to spasm. An old riding injury that would stay with him for the rest of his life. Before him stood a messenger from the Sultan himself waiting for the letter that Giuseppe was writing.

My Lord and Master your most humble servant sends you words that will warm your heart.

My latest plan for weakening the Italian forces both in the field and in their Capital are going according to plan. I have just received word that the fake letter that Antonia Maria received has done it's task. It has caused a division between my brother senator Alessander and Vincent Corniglia of Messi that will be a long time healing if ever. The letter is obviously a fake to them but the fools don't know the half of it. With the watermark of the Kantakouzenos family of Crete so blatantly used it will of course be discounted as a fake. With the nonsense in the letter of me working with my brother it will be clear to all that it is a fake. But what the idiots don't realize is that I DID send the letter. The greatest part of the forgery is actual true. No one will be able to bring themselves to believe that I indeed did sent it. The irony is just too too delicious. This feeling of success must be savored like a fine wine. But more to the point the seeds of doubt have been sown my Master. Although everyone will try to go on as before there will always be that nagging doubt in the backs of their minds as to who really did send it. Is Alessander the cad and traitor in the letter? Did the Kantakouzenos of Crete really have a hand in it and just get sloppy or did Vincent Corniglia is a jealous rage forge the letter to destroy his only real rival for the hand of the beautiful Antonia? If I am right there will be blood on the floor before this sad tale has played itself out. I do enjoy my work for you master and hope that the other plots I have started will bear more fruit for our cause.

(OOC)
I'm stuck doing jury duty next week so I might not be posting for a week or two but I had to go out with a bang. If this twist messes up anyone's story line just ignore it and continue in the direction you want. I just couldn't help myself. It seemed the perfect spot for Giuseppe to rear his head again and Torment Alesander.

A letter received in Constantinople

Dear Mustafa,

May this missive find you well and may Allah smile upon all your endeavors.

I am extremely pleased with the way you have insinuated yourself into the councils of Giuseppe Storia. I am also very impressed with the way you managed to subtly influence his plot to discredit his brother in a way helpful to my cause. He may think himself clever by managing to procure some of my family's stationery; little does he know that your "grueling quest" to pilfer it was in reality as simple as me handing it to you! The confusion and plotting among the Senators that will be the inevitable result of this little incident will bring more power into my family, and will of course mean greater rewards to our faithful servants. It is a pity that those idiotic decendents of mine in Rome botched parts of the plan; but as they are not privy to my thoughts, I must expect their actions to be periodically utterly useless to me. I will ensure that they know my displeasure at their failure, though...

Please keep up the good work, and I will contact you as necessary. If you continue to do well, I am thinking about sending you my great-granddaughter Anna to serve as your second wife.

Yours in submission to the Will of Allah,

Mdme. Kantekouzenos

OOC: I'm just taking back the plot that Storey grabbed from me. :D

I want to thank him for setting up Giuseppe as a front man for Grandmama's plot. :p

"Doge Gronchi, if I may make a recommendation, stall the Turks to a white peace and then come down hard on the rebellions. Without a war to occupy our forces and to upset the peasantry, the rebels will be overwhelmed and lose heart quickly, and are unlikely to gain any additional support. I am sure that we can forge a white peace with Turkey, if we are able to send General Rex's and my combined commands around Sicily and Naples by sea and land in Constantinople. We have nothing to fear from their navy as it is, so it should be rather painless. Afterwards, the combined might of Rex and I, plus McCollum's Republican Guard, should be enough to destroy all of the rebels without calling for any more reserves.

Good luck, your highness, in whatever path you choose. I know that I was quick to come down hard on you early in your term, but you have proven yourself a capable leader, given a little time and experience. You are leading this nation through the toughest times it has endured in its history, a tough task indeed, but you have the chance to bring it out more powerful and glorious than ever. Again, good luck."

warspite, if you have time, could you update the summary thread (I don't really care too much about the chronological summaries, but the alliances, tech levels, army sizes and leaders, etc., is kind of out of date)?

I love this post Sharur, because it shows how far removed you guys are from the computer game aspect of this scenario, and have little idea of true reality just like in real life in those days. You get bits and pieces of info and have an idea of what could or might happen, but because someone else controls the strings, fate is never really known. Hmmmmm, keep roleplaying guys, it has much greater potential if you play along.:)

1577 JUNE-JULY

JUNE

1st, Rebels in Tyrol increase in number to a total of 18,000 men and they also gain control of the state, raising the rebel scum flag.

4th, GREx and Sharur land in Sardinia and their combined army of 25/8/30 engage 8000 algerians. After a brief battle the muslims are routed and begin withdrawing by the beaches. However the Italians keep attacking the Algerians and after Admiral Quirini intercepted the Algerian ships off the Sardinian coast sinking all 8 enemy warships. Then the Italians made light work of the remaining algerian troops on the beaches. The algerian assault in Sardinia was a disaster for them. Italy won a big victory.

5th, 100,000 men commanded by Pizani Rex and Mustapha march toward Donal in Illyria. Donal recieves much needed reserves building his army to 35,000 men.

18th, Hungary takes control of wallachia , which is a big victory for the christians in the war. There was a long way to go though.

JULY

Hungary accepts peace with WAllachia for 133ducats. What was worse for Italy besides losing its allies in the fight agains Turkey, was revolts sprout up in other states. Illyria, Corsica and Messina and also a small revolt in Arica south america. Rome army of 17,000 men are sent to messina.

2nd, Gen Donal engages rebels in Illyria and slaughters all 12,000 of them. However the rumble of turkish marching steps could be felt and it wouldnt be long before Donal was under assault by Pizani again.

3rd, Doge raises 14,000 cavalry for war. again manpower limits army building.

5th, Italy again wins a small naval battle in cyclades but the main turkish fleet was still building, the main battle was yet to be fought at sea.

20th, REbels defeat Italian forces in Tyrol, Astorio was once again victorious.

21st In Nice Italian troops defeat rebels finally
25th, In Arica Italy again wins a battle against rebels however to the north in Ayacucho The 23,000 rebels beat back the Italian armies and routed them.

On the 30th the flood gates of the turkish army opened up on Donal in Illyria, the battle had begun. First 5000 turks, then an army of 26,000 then another 25,000 men joined and stay tuned for the results of this crucial battle on the front lines....

Not you Sharur but to some degree your character in the Italy AAR is blind to events going on around him. Thats why i like this so much, you get the chance to live out a character, who doesnt have all the information and cant fully grasp whats going on, just like kings and queens in the 16th century, at the mercy of what little news they got. You know what i mean partner:) Its playing EU on a whole new level.

In a private conversation with the Doge...

M'lord, I appreciate the wisdom you show in calling for the opinion of the Senate in these current matters. As you know, we still have before us the question of whether to work together with the common people for peace, or whether to do as has always been done, and simply crush them and their cries for justice with the strength of the sword. Now, we risk losing a war and actually sacrificing Christian lands to the Turkish infidel (an unthinkable possibility!) because of our unwillingness to swallow our pride and actually negotiate with the Freedom Coalition. Your excellency, I would ask you to consider who the true enemy is here; our own fellow Italian citizens, or the Turkish infidel? Which would it be better to come to terms with? Doge Gronchi, if you don't mind me saying, I think our best option is to approve the Constitution and bring peace within Italy so that we can focus our military efforts on subduing the Turks rather than our own people.

Before the Senate...

My fellow Senators, we have deliberated long enough. The Freedom Coalition awaits our answer, and the Turks will not restrain their armies while we ponder whether to approve this Constitution. You have seen the evidence; many other nations in Europe, long before ourselves, have seen the wisdom of creating a means to hear the concerns of their common citizens in the halls of government. (OOC: at least England and France that I know of, and I'm sure there are others). Sirs, has not Italy been at the forefront of this emerging period of cultural and political rebirth, of -if I may coin the term- Renaissance. Shall we now then decide to take a giant step backwards into the ages of darkness which have preceded us; or shall we step forward into an age of Enlightenment, where all men have a voice within their society, and where we, the ruling class, have the wisdom and humility to learn from our fellow men? I leave the choice to you; but choose we must for time is short. Will we accept this Constitution and create for Italy a General Assembly of Citizens, or will we resort once again to crushing the common man with a flood of blood, toil, tears and sweat?

OOC: Okay, so who gets the final say on this? Does the Doge or does the Senate? If it's the Doge then I guess Jeep should let us and Warspite know what he wants to do. If it's the Senate then I guess Warspite needs to give us the final decision of how the NPC's voted. Of course I guess the best option is for us to voice our opinions, Warspite to give the NPC percentages, and the Doge to make the final decision. At any rate, lets do it soon so we can get down to kicking some Turkish butt! :D

1577 AUGUST-OCTOBER

AUGUST

A new revolt against the government in Rome springs up in Tucuman the gold producing state. The governor there declares himself chief of the Tucuman nation and stops the flow of gold to Italy. He has a 23,000 man army to back his new country up.

BATTLE OF ILLYRIA, July30-Sept23,
Donal felt he was now prepared for the onslaught of Turkish attackers. The only thing he was lacking was cavalry but they werent of much use in the hills anyways. The turks had Donal outnumbered 3/2 and used every bit of that advantage. Donal drew first blood by completely obliterating a 5000 man muslim force in less than two days before the other muslims even arrived. Then Pizani arrived with fresh troops with Mustapha behind him. They combined to flank Donal and with firepower and even shock charges, Donal could not keep up with the turkish onslaught. On one day alone Donal lost 4000 men and he was constantly giving ground to avoid further losses. Finally after nearly two months of battle, Donals men could not take anymore and Italy retreated to Istria to the north. The turks began sieging Illyria rather than chase Donal, a mistake they would learn to regret later. Both sides took massive losses. Donal lost no less than 21,000 men compared with Turkeys 19,000 losses. Turkey could have easily chased Donal further north to crush the Italian line but Mustapha outranked Pizani and forced him to stay and siege Illyria. Pizani was furious but obeyed the orders.

6th Astorio in Tyrol having just defeated once again the forces of Italy, declares the free state of Tyrol and himself to be Doge of the free states.

7th Doge Giovanni in an effort to crush the rebellions raises another 10,000 men from the peasant pool, but it only angers the people more it seems to see their sons sent off to fight.

The crisis deepens to drastic levels as stability drops further (0) Doge Giovanni is now calling on the senate to help him fully to end the crisis. The senate begins to finalize a formal constitution which Giovanni and now long time opponent Chevy Driver say they will approve of.

27th A fresh Italian army of 15,000 men attacks Astorios rebel army in Tyrol and finally defeats the rebel king pin. Astorio escapes to helvetia and his followers in Tyrol try to hold the fortress against Italy. the siege begins there.

30th Rebels in Corsica are defeated by G REx and Sharurs combined army.

SEPTEMBER
A revolt in Tangiers of 11,000 rebels closes off Italies last open port to the atlantic ocean.

Poland sends forces to help crush the free state rebels in Tyrol.

8th, In Guayaquil south america, 22,000 italians crush a small rebel force and begin sieging the rebel outpost there.

15th, Doge Giovanni sends his friend Colonel Alenstri to fight rebels in messina. However Alenstri fails to win an advantage and is beaten back by the rock solid sicilian rebels. losses are light on both sides of the 17,000 man armies.

BATTLE OF AEGEAN SEA, Sept 19th-Dec30th,
The turkish fleet made its main appearance in the aegean sea in september with a total of 11/45/1 while Italy had its fleet of 17/60/0. In order to stop the turks from invading crete the Italians engaged the turks in the aegean sea and a very long series of battles generated. At first Italy lost 10 ships and was forced to regroup, later however they managed to give Turkey a solid fight and by november and december the Turks were on the run losing a combined 15 ships. By the end of the Year, Italy was in control of the seas once again but all that could change later as more muslim fleets entered the fray. The first Aegean battle was won by Italy, there was sure to be a second later.

OCTOBER
The revolt in Ayacucho intensifies, now 31,000 rebels held the state and the Italian governor stepped down and gave the control over to rebels who quickly began stopping the gold supply to Italy.

2nd, In responce to news of more losses in south america, Doge giovanni raises 10,000 men there to crush the revolts.

23rd, Victory in south america comes when an Italian army of 12,000 defeated the Tucuman army of 17,000 rebels. Then they began moving deep into the hills laying siege to the rebels strongholds.

27th, Donal gets much needed reinforcements in Istria, His army goes from 12,000 men to 30/14/27, now he has cavalry and guns to back his attacks up. His elite shock tactics could now be used fully against the enemy.

28th, Ayacucho rebels were attacked by 16,000 Italians, the 31,000 rebels routed the Italians but at a cost of 25,000 men. The rebel army was essentially crushed and Italy lost only 3000 men. That Italian army would march right back for more in November and retake the state for Italy before the end of the year.

In Rome, the NPC senate approves 60/40 for a limited constitution to help give commoners some freedoms. they just want the revolts to end as riots in every state deteriorate nobility wealth.

(basically its up to you guys now, and yes the Doge has final say on if constitution is passed or not, considering before the new law he is the law.)

July 11, 1577

The past few months had seen Vincent and Antonia together often, planning the details of their wedding. Vincent was a man of simple tastes, thus he submitted easily to Antonia's suggestions and desires when it came to the more elaborate nuances of their wedding. He was soon lost in a bevy of flowers, art decor, guest lists, banquet menus, etc., etc, ad infinitum, ad nauseum... He didn't care; it gave him an excuse to be near Antonia and that was all that mattered. Truth be told, Vincent admired her ability to manage, organize, plan, and negotiate all the subtle social courtesies required for such an event. She was a genius at such things. Vincent was glad he had chosen to marry such an intelligent and take charge kind of woman. He needed that. Vincent had always been the kind to invest more energy in his professional ambitions and his intimate friendships than in his own personal affairs. Perhaps with Antonia in his life now he could begin to rely on her to look out for such things. He smiled as he thought about the possibility of starting a family of his own with her.

For her part, Antonia was satisfied with her choice. Vincent was a good man, a handsome man, and she knew that he would be a good provider and father to Edmundo. Truth be told, she admired Vincent. He was ambitious and influential, qualities she greatly desired in a man, but he was also sensitive and thoughtful too. There was something mysterious to him, something behind his deep, dark brown eyes that she couldn't quite grasp as her own yet. Perhaps it was a Corniglia thing. She remembered hearing stories about his Great-uncle Gandalf, and how he used to remind people of the Mad Wizard Merlin at times with his grey beard and deep dark eyes. Vincent had some of that same wild look at times too. She sighed in contentment and smiled affectionately at him as she caught sight of him tumbling with Edmundo on the floor.

..........................................

Meanwhile, a thousand and more miles away, in a dark castle in the heart of Poland, Veronika, Queen of Poland-Lithuania and Princess of Bohemia, was giving birth to twins. Twins who would bear the likeness and genealogy of the Corniglias, but who would be raised as a Prince and Princess of the Poles and Lithuanians. If Veronika's husband, King Stefan Batory, realized that it had been less than nine months since the consummation of their marriage, he was discreet and perhaps caring enough to not make mention of it to her. In fact he did not even object when Veronika insisted on naming the son Viktor, a northern European variation of Vincent. The boy would grow up with the beauty and paleness of his mother, but with the same deep, haunting eyes of his father. The girl she named, Tatsiana, out of respect for her husband the King. It had been the name of his mother, a Belorussian duchess. She would grow up to be even more of a beauty than her mother, and perhaps to break even more hearts.

Of course, Vincent knew of none of this as he continued to make plans for his wedding to the Lady Antonia Maria of Trani.

Sharur walks up to the podium with a distressed look on his face.

"Senators, it seems that, despite the recent victories of General Rex and I in Sardinia, and the victories over the rebels in Nice and the Vespuccis, Doge Gronchi and a majority of you have decided in favor of giving rights to this Freedom Coalition. Even Senator Chevy Driver, who was until a few days ago adamant in his opposition, has agreed. So, without further ado, I also pledge my support to Senator Corniglia's newest draft of the Constitution, and I pray that we are not making a grave mistake."
