nice ones, i think before too long we will have a full history book on eu Italy:)

fournier, im glad you said that about control over the pope, i want someone to take that position like mariani has doge. PETRUS might do it so let me see if he plays first, if he doesnt you have pope for now, pope petrus has a life span till 1566 per the dice roll, so the next pope whoever wants it will start then. , far as im concerned the pope can control italy just as much as the doge with his religious clout. lets make it fun aye. so ill talk to you fournier in a day or two if petrus doesnt play pope, thanks

carolus rex i figure you can be the general of any army you want. but i better give that power to mariani, so doge mariani shall place carolus rex in position now, maybe as general of whole army or general of just holy legion.

If you guys dont mind i want more of the control of this thing to be in your hands. I just play the game and do what you want. you guys run the story i run the game. so the doge mariani is exactly that, he says which senators are in what position and as i play the game you will see how it plays out. then when a new doge comes, he is in control and the pope has control too in religious ways you know.

for example, mariani places senator storey as ambassador to improve relations with england, i play the game out and storey is the one i write into aar as improving the relations. if something goes wrong in the game whoevers name was assigned to the position might get slammed, thats the fun of it.

anyways, before i start the next years, tell me what you think senators.

by the way may i humbly but proudly say for all of us participants in this great experiment. POST 200 IS DONE, CAN WE GET 200 MORE :D

i just read through the first few pages of this aar, you have come a long way on this warspite, whats the plan for the future, oh we make that decision right?

i say you started out great with some storytelling in with the aar. so keep that up, i think the idea is spreading so it must be good. i like the idea of the doge and pope having more control over the senators but could be tricky for you to work with. i just hope i dont have to be a losing general again:) but hey thats the fun of this, not everyone is a perfect hero.

mariani will have a hard time leading the country with the little bit of information he has, lets face it. you are playing the game while we watch and read on. but so long as you supply the info of the game, we can make decisions. thats almost realistic because back then leaders didnt have all the information to make the best and wisest decision. and leaders back then went off of gut instincts and pompus pride. it should be interesting to see how mariani and petrus or pope do with barking out orders to you and then you playing it out and feeding us the results. im in as always, lets play and build the story.

later

Vote!

Niccolo Carlotti is sitting at his desk, obviously busy with something. He is writing a letter:

Your Excellency,

It has come to my attention that my vote is required concerning my opinions on the future of the country, so without further delay, I so send them to you:

Policy number ONE = 1

We should move the capital to Roma, as it is the historic capital to the nation. Furthermore, it would make administration easier as this is where the Pope resides, and because of its central position in the country.

Policy number TWO = 3

I think we should forget about Spain and concentrate on the English and Swedish aspect of this strategy. Since our English are our neighbors in the New World, a good understanding with them wouldn't hurt. Sweden is an up and coming power and would make a powerful ally indeed in a few decades.

Policy number THREE = 1

Navies are expensive to maintain. Provided that it is large enough and that we have enough land troops to defend ourselves, I would agree to reduce its size.

Policy number FOUR = 1

If we can afford it, it doesn't hurt to have a great land military. With our reduced navy, it's even more important, as, with a reduced fleet, there probably will be more amphibious attacks in the event of a war.

Policy number FIVE = 2

I wouldn't declare war on Turkey, but if the heathen pigs work up the nerve to declare war on us, I suggest making them pay dearly for it. The move will be viewed with less criticism since we would be fighting a defensive war

As always, I have the strongest faith in your Excellency's leadership.

Yours truly and Viva Italia!

Niccolo Carlotti of Napoli

Niccolo Carlotti of Napoli
Country: Italy
Admin: 5
Military: 4
Diplomacy: 8
Period of Reign: 1533-
Type: Statesman

Niccolo Carlotti was born in 1511 in Napoli, from modest origins. His father, a merchant from Genoa, was rumored to have participated in illegal commercial operations around Europe and North Africa, which would explain why Niccolo got such as good education. His mother was Portuguese and used to work as a barmaid in Lisboa. Throughout his life, he kept contact with his mother's family in Portugal.

Niccolo studied law and foreign policy in Napoli and Florence. He won his position as senator in 1533 when summoned in Venice by Doge Medici on a recommendation from the gouvernor of Napoli. He was known for his religious zeal and moving speeches, as well as for his interest in foreign policy.

Niccolo kept a journal in which one could find interesting details about his personal life.

Besides his other interests, Niccolo had a fondness for languages. He spoke Italian with a slight accent, because he also learned Portuguese as a child. As an adult, he went on to learn Spanish, English and French.

IN THE PALACE QUERTERS OF DOGE MARIANI, JAN 2nd 1542

Doge Mariani sat silently in his wooden, duphrame chair given to him as a gift by the nobles of Modena. He pondered matters of state as the winter of Venice pleasantly slipped by around him. Never had he imagined such power and circumstances that surounded his rule over Italy this day. His thoughts were scattered with the sound of a light knock on the door to his stateroom.

Barrioso, the doges messanger came inside and gave to Mariani a small scroll , stained and muddied with travel.

Mariani--- What is this Barrioso?

Barrioso--- My lord, this comes from a spy of King Francois I who was stationed recently in the hafsid empire. The spy will be returning to france shortly, he wishes to report your comments to his king.

Mariani--- ahhhh Barrioso, i dont have time now, im tired...

Barrioso--- sir sir... this is important he says, he leaves for france tonight, his matters of state are of importance to france, he insisted you give your comment to him for his king.

Mariani put down his wine glass, glancing at the scroll beside him. His eyes twitched with fatigue from hours of writing letters for monarchs of Poland and Hungary. He opened the scroll up carefully and emediately noticed the ever present seal of Suleyman I of the Ottomans. His eyes suddenly opened wide as the scroll opened further, shards of parchment inside with the french spies translations of the muslim writings. the scroll was a letter from the sultan himself to the emperor of the hafsid empire.

Mariani--- how did he....

Barrioso--- sir do not trouble yourself with that , for the spies number is reduced five fold for you to read this... go on please sir, hurry.

Mariani looked at Barrioso, not knowing if he should smack the boy for rushing him or praise him for his bold urgency. the doges stomach turned none the less as the inevitable news bore down on his very soul.

letter from suleyman I of the turks to the sheik of the hafsids
ah great emperor of the western provinces, your rule is glorious as mine. with your loyalty i have been greatly impressed. It is perhaps time for us to finish our conquest of the mamelukes. It is my desire to accept your request to become a part of the Ottoman empire, consider the annexation and glorification done by my hand. Now, your ambitions in Italy, oh friend how our minds work so together. We shall prepare our armies and navies at once for your disposal of ambition. War with Italy is at the fore, Rome shall soon be yours as you have dreamed great sheik of the hafsids

Mariani put down the scroll, taking the last gulp of his full glass of wine he breathed deeply, looking at Barrioso he said......

:) the plot thickens my friend, no pressure here just tell me what you would do in that situation back then as doge. basically you just read that turkey is about to annex the hafsid empire peacably, and the turks plan on attacking italy in the possibly near future. a quick look at the map tells you the turks will have a sizable empire now , just a prelude to the coming next installment and request for more roleplay. gotta love it!

You sure got that right warspite! I haven't enjoyed a strategy game this much since the classics from Koei. Although I'm majoring in computer science and economics, I just love history. Who told me about this game? Our good friend Drakken of the roleplay forum :D We attend the same university.

Keep up the good work everyone! This AAR sure is an interesting read.

that is so ironic, tell drakken if you see him, that this aar is because of him.

I was playing in his rpg forum as venice last month and he ticked me off with his archaic combat rules, so i left that forum and decided to start my own role playing/aar game because i love to write and love role playing. so mr drakken can be proud that he indirectly made this possible :D tell him he is awesome, not because of this aar but because he gives so much of his free time for those in the role playing forum, even though i didnt agree with things he did, he still deserves credit for his dedication to the game.

maybe he should join us and contribute to this, he is one heck of a role player and writer of stories, it would be an honor to have him:)

thank you martin for your comments, inspiration comes not from me but from you all.

Played all of those, mainly on the Nintendo platforms. Gotta love them all, but GK 2 takes the cake. I enjoyed the Uncharted Waters/New Horizons series also, although those are historical rpgs. I heard they're up to the sixth installment in Asia. Amazing. BTW, if you have a chance to get your hands on a copy of Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong, I'm sure you'd love it. It's easily the best historal novel I've ever read. I'll try to go and read your Mameluke AAR now :) And I'll try and see if we can get Drakken over here.

*Senator Robert McCollum rises from his bench and moves to theh ead of the Senate chambers. He is beginning to get a reputation as one of the most frequent speakers in these chambers. "If only they would heed my advice more frequently" he curses to himself. His attempts to garner a party of like minded senatorss, although not an utter failture, was also nto the complete success that he would like. TO Robert, anything less than complete success could be considered a failure. Well, perhaps they would listen to him today. The Seantor was planning to speak on matters of grave importance, and if he could just get enough people to rally behind his Republican plan, and the Republican Plan Party(he was calling it the Republican Party for short), perhaps this Republic would prosper yet*

We here all go by many names. There are those of us here who proudly wear the badges of the Neopoliton, the Savoyian, Sicilian, Genoan and so forth. *there are some anger wispers, some of the newest members to the Senate, fearing an insult, begin to rise from their seats in protest. Senator McCollum waves them down*

I myself am from Ravenna, and would proudly nock down the gates o heaven themselves, should anyoen on the otherside insult that fair and glorious city. But, there is one thing that I am above a Ravenian, something that we all share in common! We are all members of a most noble race which was strode this orb for many thousands of years, suffering through the hard times, and prospering in the good. I would like to declare that this, here, is one of those good times.

And yet! And yet, there are those outside of these chambers who would wish to strip away our rights, to push our faces into the dust of defeat, to see this most nobal experimetn ripped and shredded apart!! My sources in the Doge's chambers have just wisked to be a letter that details an agreement between the Turk and Hasaffid, to merge these two kingdoms and to launch an assault against our god blessed community!

However in his most glorious wisdom, god has seen fit to allow a copy of this letter ot fall into our hands, so that we may deal with those satanic heathens as we see fit. I call on you now to turn defeat into most sweet victory.

Let us act as God's own angels and make a pre-emptive strike against the Turk in their own home. Let it be we who burn their homes, we who defile THEIR evil churches, we who shall drive their horrid legons back into the firey pits of hell from which they were spawned!!

If we make a pre-emptive strike, we may still cathc the Turks and the Hassafid off gaurd. With our shown of strength we shall be able to sweep through the Balkans and liberate our Greek brethen who toil under the horrid yoke of the oppressor. As we do this, the good and Christian people still under occupation by the Sultan shall also rise up in revoly agaisnt their cruel master, and we shall begin to set them free, as well as driving the Turks back from our own boarder!!

My friends, as you know, I have been a strict proponent of peace, as well as colonial expanssion. I have even spoken up ot sya that the onyl war that we shoudl partak in should be one to liberate and civilize the Icans from their Emperor. I still believe in these goals, do not for a second believe anything else. However, I am willing to set these plans on hold until such a time as the Turkish menace has been dealt with. I would even glady create an army from my own estates and march it addectly to the walsl of Constantinople itself! Good senators, if even _I_ have seen this to be the correct path of action, will you not do the same?

*Robert McCollum gets down on his knees and thrusts his hands into the air as is pleading* I beg with you, I PLEADE with you, for the good of the Italian people, let us do war with the Turk and destroy these unholy union before it has even begun. Let no family no Italian family starve due to marauding armies, or for Italian women and children to cower in fear from the decrepid enemy!

In closing I would like to qoute my father who once said that "We shall not walk into the cold dark night". My father was a great man and, although speaking of the war with the Spaniard, knew that we must fight to survive. So I look to YOU to determine the fate of our nation, shall you allow us to walk into that night by our own will, or shall we charge into the day and defeat the night beofre it has decended. It is all up to YOU

*Robert McCollum steps down from the podium to a Senate that is pure silence. Much of the silence is from the shock of the Senators to the pure audacity and power of the plan. Many, however, jsut roll thier eyes at the cheap theatrics. Robert got bakc to his seat and smiled, this was to be cosnidered oneo f the greatest speahces of his carrier*

I had a Dream....

Gentlemen, I rise to speak today to tell you of a dream I had last night. While normally I would not trouble this assemblage with the random meanderings of the unconscious mind, this dream was of a quality that made it seem every bit as real as this world in which we live. It was a dream in which many things were different than in our world - the Italian Republic was not formed in 1492 & Venice stood alone in the world, many nations (such as Brittany & Ragusa) did not exist, & Spain controlled all the Hapsburg realms between France & Germany - yet intuitively I sense that this dream was a prophecy of this our real world.

In this dream of a still divided Italy, I saw Venice slowly become a mighty state, rising to the status of the greatest of the Great Powers by the time the dream ended abruptly less than 100 years in our future. On what path did Venice march to achieve this state you might ask? By steady regular war with the Turk I answer, by keeping the Ottomans penned in, by stalling their advance throughout the Middle East, while steadily making advances of their own.

The key moment in this dream was when the once proud Mameluke Empire was reduced to holding only its base in Egypt. Concerned that these rich provinces would fall into the hands of the Turk - and I assure you that these provinces are indeed populous & rich - the Venetians struck first, annexing these lands for their own. This kept the Turk from the geographic proximity necessary to pressure his North African & Nubian allies into peaceful annexation, while securing to Venice a trade center in Alexandria which swiftly became the richest in the Mediterranean, arrogating to itself the trade of the bulk of the Middle East & the Indian Ocean.

From this Egyptian base, Venice was able to expand at its leisure to the west, south, & east - concentrating on forcing into submission the many allies (both actual & potential) of the Turk in this region. Many of these provinces were sparcely inhabited & through missionary activity were returned once more to the Catholic fold, while the highly populated provinces contributed heavily to the treasury through taxation. As many of these provinces produced extremely valuable goods such as spices & chinaware, which are in high demand in the civilized lands of Europe, the wealth of the Venetian Republic grew enormously. And the peoples of these lands, used as they are to foreign domination, never once raised the banner of rebellion, as the doges of Venetian Republic wisely chose to allow the Moslems their muezzins & mullahs, as long as the Christian minorities were also allowed their God-given rights of worship in those Muslim-majority provinces.

When my dream ended abruptly in 1633, the realm controlled by the Venetian Republic controlled virtually everything between the capitols of Algiers & the Persian Empire. It extended from the Alps in the north to the wellsprings of the Nile in the south. Colonial cities in North America & South Africa extended the reach of the realm. Despite this tremendous expansion, the powers of Europe never once objected that Venice had grown too powerful or tried to stop its expansion. Instead they airily dismissed North Africa & the Middle East as merely the "rest of the world", & (if they cared at all) applauded the efforts of the Venetian Republic to roll back the once mighty Turk.

It is clear that if my dream continued that Venice would shortly have stretched from the Pillars of Hercules to the Indus river, an empire to rival that of Alexander the Great or even our Roman forefathers. From there, the expansion of Venice would have been unstoppable, likely conquering all of India from bases in Persia. Expansion in the New World & the Indies was only a matter of time. There is no doubt that the 18th century would have been an era of Venetian hegemony in world affairs.

And yet you ask, why tell us of a dream? We deal in realities here. I answer because this dream points us in the direction of our future expansion. If solitary Venice could achieve so much, certainly the greater wealth & superior leadership of a united Italy could achieve even more. The key is to start now, before the Turk can consolidate his position in the Middle East & North Africa. The Doge Mariani has informed us of the recent communiques between the Sultan & his allies the Hafsids. Clearly we must strike now, before our enemies grow too strong. Seizing a base in Egypt is the key. From there, we can follow the adage of our Roman forebears - divide & conquer. The destiny of the Italian Republic is at hand. Carpe diem - let us seize the day!

PISH POSH DREAMS, how dare the senator misha disgrace the Republic of italy, unified with blood to be solely venecian. Italy is not venice and venice is no more. My house in florence did not pay for Italy in blood in money only for it to be regarded as a glorified venice. further we must not seek to expand into the muslim lands as we know it only leads to more bloodshed and for us and our sons sons because those people will not stop trying to get rid of us. why conquer land already settled by the pagans when we have free land around a new world to claim. Italy has just stepped out of a brutal war in one piece, lets us not risk more war and chances , if turks bring war then let them we defenc but we must not no more attack. i call on the wise doge mariani to resist pressure to start a war when we are in peace and have the luxury of waiting.

what says mariani?

EU MANUAL UPDATE FOR ITALY 1492-1541

In the 15th century the italian people were split up into several duchies and a couple republics. Venice was the dominant country then and continued to grow in strength. Danger loomed however from the powers of the Ottomans, French, and spanish. This led to a cooperative defence among milan, modena, tuscany and Venice , later Milan brought genoa into the fold. This cooperative was weak no thanks to bitter rivalries between italian states. Things progressed however and by the fall of constantinople the northern italian states entered into an alliance of protection that further united them in cause. Key diplomatic moves by venice and milan and other pro-italian figures led to the league of Italy in 1472. Still a touch and go alliance matters improved when venice and genoa settled some old scores and in 1486 nobles from all the states enacted the papers of verona that officially united all the states into one nation. A dual leadership of milan and venice took place but in 1492 venice gave Giovanni of milan privilage of being the first doge of Italy.

Italy developed into a strong republic, led by the Doge and supported by a large senate made up of all the lands of the country. The government was modeled after venice and the capital made venice as well. Italy did not gain favor at all in the world community and worked hard to gain austria as an ally, however that failed and it led to an alliance with Russia in 1493. when russia entered into two wars that Italy could not help fight, the so called phony wars of 1493-1495. Doge augustino with the senate began to side with france. The pivitol Franco-austrian war of 1494-1500 led directly to Italy joining France in alliance in 1499 and emediately invaded austria.

With Italies first victory over austria a year later the fledgling republic broke out into the world scene no longer to be ignored. With france now as a strong ally. Italy went about annexing savoy diplomatically in 1510. While relations with france grew stronger, Italy embarked on a treacherous ambition with the invasion of the papal states in 1510, after the annexation of the pope, Italy had new power and virtually took over the catholic church.

Italy further solidified its power over the region over the next years culminating in the annexation of naples in 1520. Political tensions began to mount however and the republic struggled to find its purpose. Dispite the political upheavals of the 1520s Italy enjoyed times of peace enough to build some structure. It would need its stability when spain invaded leading to the spanish-italian war that included austria and france. Italy would prove herself a new great power by first defeating austria once again, and then with france forcing spain to peace. Italy would gain much territory in those wars of 1530-1536, including 1/3 of austria, all of helvetia and sicily from spian.

Italy had emerged at last as a major power, and the election of war hero Mariani as doge further united the country and led her to a new age of optimism and expansion. By 1541 Italy had established herself as a colonial power and great influence in europe.

Misha of Umbria
Country: Italia
Skill:
Admin: 8
Milit: 7
Diplo: 6
Period of Reign: 1503-?

The statesman known as Misha was not born to greatness. He was born in 1482 in Assisi as the third son of an impoverished noble family of German extraction, which had received lands in Italy for its support of the Hohenstaufen Emperors during their campaigns to pacify Italy. Given the poverty of the familial lands & the lack of connections with the great houses of Italy, young Misha's prospects were not bright. Showing an affinity for languages & mathematics, Misha was early on earmarked for the priesthood. Misha vacillated among which order to enter - the studious Columbans, the powerful Dominicans, & the pious Franciscans - serving novitiates with each.

Meanwhile, the family fortunes were rising. Misha's father displayed an unexpected talent at siegecraft, & was soon the subject of a bidding war among the mutually contentious Italian states. When the Italian Republic was founded in 1484, Misha's father was a leading general in her unified army & became the senator for Umbria. While on campaign to crush the Styrian revolt of 1502, Misha's father & two older brothers - Augustino and Marco - were slain. Misha was called to take his father's place in the Senate.

Young Misha first rose to prominence in the Senate in the "France or Austria" debates of 1503. Misha was the first to propose that entering the French alliance would be useful insofar as it would bring Savoy & Italy more closely together, which could result in the peaceful accession of Savoy into the Italian Republic. Events confirmed Misha's prediction, & the unification of Italy took its next big step forward.

After this first success, Misha took a long journey abroad, ostensibly to establish mercantile connections for the new Italian Republic throughout the Mediterranean. In actuality Misha was a spy in the service of the Republic, using mercantile cover to inform the doge of capabilities of potential adversaries. During this long absence from Italy, the Republic annexed the Papal States & Naples.

Misha returned to the Senate in 1523, lauding the success of reunification thus far, but ruing the cost in decline in relations with foreign powers that Italy had suffered as a result. He also sensed a sentiment among some senators for conversion to the Protestant heresy. Misha became an outspoken champion in the Senate for the proposition that Italy must always be a leading light of Catholicism in the world. He also began to express a belief that after the reunification of Italy was complete, that the Republic should look to North Africa & the Holy Land as a grounds for potential expansion, arguing that spiritual & material gains could most easily be combined in that way.

When war came with the Spanish in 1532, Misha was surprised to be named commander of the Army of Umbria & given the mission to capture Sicily. Although always a fervent exponent of the reunification & the son of a famous general, Misha had never considered himself a man of war. But when the motherland calls, who cannot heed its call? Despite several miscalculations, Misha displayed an unexpected knack for military command, and led the Army of Umbria to ultimate victory, securing the island of Sicily from Spanish control, & repatriating it to the Republic of Italy.

After the war, Misha has continued to be a strong supporter of the policies of the new Doge Mariani d'Abruzzi e Molise. He resists the blandishments of the Imperial Party, arguing that the capitol of the Italian Republic should not be returned to Rome until the reunification of Italy is complete & that Italy should remain a republic. He favors continued exploration & expansion abroad, but argues that the once Catholic lands of North Africa, the Levant, & the Near & Middle East are the natural grounds for Italian expansion in the future. He absolutely rejects any suggestions that Italy should show any tolerance for the heresies that have been growing in northern Europe.

VOTE RESULTS

Well here it is, the senate vote of 1541 is complete, well sorta

the senate voted 6 to 5 in favor of keeping the capital of the republic in venice. CAPITAL STAYS IN VENICE close one though, forcing a new vote in 50 years.

2nd vote, 5 votes for relations with germanic nations, 3 for arab nations and 3 for spain/england, FUNDS WILL BE SPENT TO IMPROVE RELATIONS WITH GERMANIC NATIONS

3rd vote on navy funding and size, we did not get a vote from one senator so the vote is even at 5 for reduced fleet and 5 votes for stayed fleet size. thus the vote goes to doge who voted for keep size of navy, NAVY REMAINS CURRENT SIZE

4th vote on army size, 6 votes for a larger army and 5 votes for a same size army , ARMY SHALL BE INCREASED 33%

5th vote, as expected the vote was unanimous, TAKE ALL THE LAND WE CAN GET IF THERE IS WAR WITH TURKEY

again thank you all for your vote, this session of the maggior consiglio is about to close and a new era about to begin for Italy.

May god be with us always. (senator warspite)
