I haven't tried Italy yet, but during my first game as Germany it occured to me that if Italy WERE to join the Allies just as I was launching my invasion of Poland in 1939 - I'd be totally screwed. I was just wondering if this is even possible, when playing as Italy. I mean granted, you're supposed to be disillusioned and bitter at the Allies (and Fascist) in this era, but this seems like the quickest way to potentially 'winning' the game.
-Go annex Austria & most of southern Germany (heck maybe Hungary & Czech /Slovakia also... heck if you're really good maybe you could take most of the Reich for yourself), then go with your friends and gang-bang Japan into submission - they wouldn't stand a chance. Then tech-trade your way into turning your Allied cohort into something advanced which would give the USSR something to fear - assuming you wanted to go that route and be the last alliance standing. Then I guess you could systematically take the Balkans (Germany's ex-sphere of influence), and basically be the 'DoW specialist' for your alliance. Maybe eventually leave the Allies once the Commintern is beaten, and then really 'go for broke'.
It probably doesn't work this way, as I'm sure someone will explain. But anyway... A nice 3-front war in 1939, with the Italians suddenly coming up the middle... that would be nasty. Then again, it just occurred to me that I may be overestimating the Italian Army... hmm.
