Is it possible to have a good game as Italy in the Allies? Using your navy to blockade the Germans, helping to defend France whilst keeping a strong border at Austria, saying no to aiding the nationalists.

Even if you lose Europe, you still can fall back on your african colonies to operate from until D-day.

So, is it plausible or maybe events will conflict with eachover and just cause random crashes?

Anyone ever tried it?

The closest to that that I have done is as Italy in the 1914 mod where I took over almost all of France. I can't think of any major reason why it would crash although I wouldn't be surprised if it did crash.

crash - probably not.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't much of a world war 2 if you did. (assuming you and/or the allies don't just destroy Germany right away)

Possible, but a likely bit too easy in my opinion. There wouldn't really be an African front to bother the British, and Italy is narrow enough that it wouldn't be too hard for you to hold the Germans from the north.

See if you can find a way to offset the weakness that you'd be giving the Axis by turning one of their allies into one of the Allies. Maybe try it against a German-Soviet "Unholy Alliance" or something.

Agreed. German AI would have trouble managing Italy, and don't forget the Allies would land a fair number of expeditionary forces in Italy in order to wage war that isn't happening in Africa. Heck, even the fall of AI France could be dubious with Italy in human hands.

Italy would not need any fleet, even airpower wouldn't be particularly important. CAS supporting infantry and limited motorized units could help lead offensives, while militia and infantry could be used for border defense. Of course, when Italy joined the Allies would be open to very gamey tactics: since Italy taking Southern Germany provides an excellent defensive posture.

In any event, only a German-Soviet Alliance would be a fair balance for a traitorous Italy.

I've played as an Allied Italy. It's kind of fun destroying Germany and drastically increasing your IC as a result...but then it becomes a question of what to do next. You can rampage through the Balkans, but that might start a war with the USSR that you really don't want yet. You aren't strong enough to backstab the Allies either. I decided to join the war against Japan, but that was a lot of long range transporting and severe naval losses for not much territorial gain.
