Started a new game as Italy and want to take part in the Spanish Civil War for the intervention point and rewards if the Nationalists win. The only problem is that when I do this, I'm forced to trade 50 supplies to them for nothing until 1939.

This is really detrimental since Italy doesn't have enough IC as it is and the military badly needs to be upgraded. Is there anyway around this trade? If not is supporting the Nationalists worth it?

I discovered the same problem as you. I simply realized it wasn't worth supporting the nationalists, I mean what huge benefit do you get out of it? Just leave it, Spain is useless anyone in WW2

"Spain is useless in WW2"

...besides taking Gibraltar.

What CrazyMike described sounds exaclty like the analysis I quoted in that thread about the Duce's ingame stats.

The question is: do you want to play a game historically correct? If yes, you should support Nationalists. Instead, if you want to do the best as leader of Italy, you shouldn't support Nationalist, because you can't waste all that supply with the army in desperately need of upgrading. Think of yourself and prepare the italian army properly. In my game I did so. I even decided to stay out of the insane war broke out with the Hitler's invasion of Poland. I stayed at the window and look at what happened, and while Europe was in flames, around 1942, I used my little forces to extend italian's "lebensraum" in the Balkans and I even decided to attack republicans that was still at war against nationalist.
Really I think that (as it was) the power of Ussr and Allies is overwhelming and for Italy chaining herself with Nazi's Germany is a suicide. Better to stay apart and take advantage of the global situation to widen the italian's sphere of influences in Mediterranean area (Greece, Yugoslavia, Spain, also Turkey and even Bulgaria)

I agree that staying out of the Axis is and creating your own empire is a good route if you want to avoid confrontation with the Allies, only downfall is you won't get blueprints or a reliable source of resources through Germany.

However, I think 50 supplies is unrealistic. Italy's involvement in the Spanish Civil war wasn't healthy for their military industry, but it didn't cripple it. 10-20 supplies would be better IMO.

Well, I can't judge for myself, but according to Kennedy it did. In case you haven't read it, here's the link to that thread where I posted an excerpt of Kennedy's work:
