Italy and the Road to War

I have been filling my time waiting for this game by a WW2 documentary binge of epic proportions.

If I remember correctly, Italy will be the nation used for its tutorial of HoI4.

I found this recently, and I must say it was worth the watch!

This documentary features small interview clips of Vittorio and Edda Mussolini, details of the 1934 clash between Italy and Germany over Austria, and a ticker-tape parade for The Balbinater in the United States (yes, truly).

What Mussolini says about Germans in a public speech at minute 21:55 was very shocking.

Check it out if you intend to play Italy, it will put you in the mood.....

Yeah I intend to play an alt-history version of Italy. The "alt" party will be a Mussolini that doesn't ally with Germany because he listens to Ciano and realizes Hitler is Italy's doom.

And the first battle ground will be Austria.

I have not joined the Axis however GB declared on me in '38 which for some odd reason enticed Poland to attack me in Hungary! Then while fighting Greece in Greece, they did an amphibious landing north of Albania and I then had to do an about face and contain the threat. GB & France decimated my navy and removed me ever so gently out of Africa.

After Bulgaria onto N. Africa via Turkeys defeat then onto Spain via Portugal!

The non historical start point could easily see event trees for Italian or French player to try to recover the 1935 French Italian pact. Or Britain not pursuing embargoes. No Eden goof ups and Italy stays out of the war and Anchluss means war in '38.

I stopped playing HOI3. BICE was good, but the UK is not properly balanced and its overpowered.

I've tried it twice in HOI3.
First try I decided to go my own way. Took Yugoslavia, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey. Then as Germany was winning the war against the USSR I invaded the Soviets and took the Caucasus. Then I went back and took Spain by sea/air and then Portugal last.

Second try was way more interesting. I focused on building up a bit faster. So then when Germany declared war on Poland I declared war on France. Germany never attacked Belgium or the Netherlands so I took Paris and all of France. Then I moved into the Balkans, took Yugo, Romania, Greece, Hungary, and Bulgaria. Not Turkey. Instead I switched and took Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. By that time Germany was losing to the USSR so I just held my line along the Czech Border and invaded Germany from Netherlands, France and Austria. I took Berlin in less than a month and conquered both Germany and Poland before the Soviets advanced as far as Poland. From there I took Spain and Portugal, the Baltics, Sweden, and Turkey and was free to focus 100% on Britain and build a navy....but then I stopped because the UK land forces were too strong because of poor balance in BICE so I just stopped.

In HOI4 I'll try both, but I wont wait until 1939. Instead I'll do what Daniel did and try to take Austria and Czechoslovakia fast and create my own faction with a select few allies. Can't wait.
