This thread as it is only for me to post summaries for my Italy aar. They are meant to summarize the past events and years of the Italy aar. If you like to post replies to this thread, please do so on the main italy aar thread. Thanks and enjoy.

WHAT IS THE ITALY AAR??
This aar is completely different from any other aar when it first started may 2nd. It was the intent to start this as not just an after action report but instead, play it as a role playing game and report the actions afterwards. Thus a hybrid RPG/AAR for the first time was spawned with this Italy aar. Not only do i play and write, but readers get involved and literally effect the course of the game i play. This idea since it started , has evolved into an incredible success of interaction and interesting fun. But it isnt complete, without the readers participation with the writer. Thus its a team effort unlike all the aars before it.

Simply put, i play the game and write the aar. The readers voice their opinions of how its going and what they would do in their posts. They are the senate of the italy i play in the game. The Doge is one of the elected senators. He is above all senators and he is the one whome i listen to for all the decisions and actions i make in the game. Thus the game isnt always so easy to play, sorta like real life ok not even close to real life but you get my point i hope. Its all for the fun of role playing the power pins of the time. Best thing is it can be translated into any country in the game and any aar out there.

THE DOGE
The Doge is one of Italies senators (you must be an active senator) who is voted in (by my rules) into position of leader of Italy (the main country of play in this aar) He acts as head over all the senators and the Pope and all decisions that i carry out for Italy. He gives me his agenda and policies for his terms, he informs me of his desires in certain situations as updates come and i carry them out as his advisors would. The Doge is the center piece position of this role playing game and has the MOST effect on the games future. The doge communicates in the aar mainly and also uses private messages to me for other matters he wishes to keep secret. Doges are non historical characters, who hold office max of 10 years or unless voted out by the senate body.

THE POPE
He is elected by me after the old pope dies (historical popes included now) if you put your name in to roleplay the next Pope and are voted in (by my methods) then you are a huge factor in the game as you dictate religious policies around the catholic world, you interact with the pope and senators, you are one step above a senator basically in power in the game. Try to keep your actions original though, no foolishness will be tollerated and private messages is a good thing if you intend to get crazy

THE SENATOR
Senators are a collective of italian nobles from throughout the empire, (any province, no limit to how many senators from any province just pick and play, simple) You as a senator voice your opinion on current national matters and events. as updates of the game flow from me and the Doge and Pope react, you also react and advise the Doge. The biggest power senators have is if they feel the Doge is completely and rediculously a failure and ruining the empire, they can all vote together to oust the Doge in favor of a new one, which will be voted in by me again. Otherwise and most likely, the doge will run his full 10 year term with senatorial advise and then a new senator will be voted in as doge.

THE AMBASSADOR
The newest postion in the italy aar, this role player acts as middleman between Doge of Italy and monarch of their country (played by me or an apointee) so if you are diplomat of poland, you are representing your monarch of poland, it would be wise not to get crazy and make sure you know some of how your monarch feels about italy or i will replace you. You have plenty of leeway so you can have fun but just dont get rediculous. (meaning you cant insult the Doge and try and start a war if italy and your country are allies or something) remember no matter what you do in roleplay, i still control the monarch and game events, but its largely based around everybodies role playing. If i as monarch instruct that countries player ambassador to do a mission, you can role play that mission out. message me if you have any question while playing ambassador, remember you represent a whole other country in this game.

Birth of a Nation 1450s to 1492

1450s and 60s--Wealthy nobles of the Italian states of Milan, Genoa, Tuscany, Modena and Venice sign initially into a protective alliance after the fall of Constantinople to the turks and growing threats from Turkish invasion from the east and from France and Spain from the west and south. The alliance would generate into the Italian League in the 60s and nobles slowly drew up a plan for co-existance and unification that later derived into the plan for a united republic.

1472-- With many nobles split on the idea, none the less the Italian League disolved political borders among the member states and ratified the treaty of Florence/Milan and Venice that set rules for the leagues operation and unification. It also created a loosely held senate that would later become the heart of the republic.

1484-- Treaty of Verona signed by major players in the league that formaly created the Republic of Italy. Much opposition to the treaty was carefully qualled dispite objection to the treaty by Pope Innocent VIII who was payed off not to excommunicate italy. Augustino Barbarigo of Venice heads the senate of the republic.

1488-- Senate votes for leader of the Republic to be named Doge. First election gives Augustino Barbarigo of venice position as first Doge of Italy.

1490-- Unrest in the Republic created by mistrust of a Venetian leader forces the senate to elect a second co-doge Giovanni Galeaz of Milan who would dramatically help gain support of a unified Italy.

1492-- Augustino Barbarigo voluntarily steps down to give sole position of Doge to Giovanni Galeaz of milan. The Republic of Italy is born.

1492-1502 From phony wars to good allies

(ALL UPDATES FOR THESE YEARS ARE ON PAGE 1 OF THE ITALY AAR)

1492 Attempts made to improve relations with Austria -189 to +7 after 500ducats resulted in a failure to gain a royal marriage and alliance. This drained much funds from the treasury and left Italy with no ally during turbulent times when most of europe dispised the new country.

1493 RM cealed with Poland (+25rel) however again Italy was denied access into an alliance. Later Russia offered an alliance which was accepted by italy, however the alliance included Portugal a bitter trade rival to Italy (venice/genoa) None the less Italy was now given some support , even if it was superficial. Russia invaded kazan that year beginning the first of the Phony wars, in which Italy could not hope to participate in or be endangered by. In october the second phony war began as the Teutonic order invaded Russia. Italy went about business as usual.

1494 Doge Giovanni passes away and Augustino Barbarigo is re-elected doge of italy. France, savoy, papal states DOW Austria and Hungary. This would be a pivotal war in the region.

1495 Both the Phony wars ended as Russia makes peace with Kazan and Teutonic Order. Helped by Leonardo da Vinci, the High Renaisance period brings a new era for Italy.

1496 Italy waits patiently for the outcome of the Austro-French war to decide who next to align with.

1497 With the Economy steadily rising and a 200d debt payed off. Italy had a large treasury of 900d it intended to use to ally with either Austria or France after the outcome of their war.

1498 With austria slowling losing ground in the war and Hungary dropping out of the war altogether italy was now paying large sums of money to help france in their war and gain favor with their alliance.

1499 Italy invades Austria in hopes of later gaining an alliance with France. Italy had built up its army and felt Austria was weak enough by now, plus italy had its eyes on Styrian gold mines. Russia or Portugal allies join the war but give no support against Austria-Hungary.

1500 Italy sacks Vienna and the 1st Austro-Italian war ends with Austria giving Italy Styria. Later that year Italy would join yet another Phony war for Russia again on Kazan. Relations with france now +123. However the alliance with Russia was not yet ended though preperations were being made to end that alliance and to join the French alliance.

1501 Third Phony war ends as Kazan is again mauled by Russia. Stability is again raised to +3 after war effects with austria.

1502 New Doge elected after Augustinos term ends. after some confusion of who would be doge, Finally Leonardo Loredan of venice was elected Doge of Italy. He would secure styria from rebels and enter both a RM and a good alliance with France after cancelling the Phony alliance to Russia. Italy was now embarking on its future with France one that would be most beneficial to Italy.

1503 While Italy enjoyed peace at home, her former ally Russia was busy expanding. Russia and Denmark DOW Sweden.

1504-1508 Treaties and Vassals

1504 Russia annexes Kazan but sweden gives her a run for her money. Italy was busy with a plan to encorparate Savoy into her Republic, relations were improved to +166 and a RM made.

1505 Russia again seeks more land by invading the Golden Horde. Italy meanwhile had thoughts of peaceful expansion by continueing to reel in Savoy for vassalation and hiring an explorer by the name of Garda to explore the atlantic ocean and hopefully compete with Spain for the new world.

1506 Savoy becomes a vassal to Italy and France and Russia both exchange maps with Italy giving her much information about the world.

1507 Garda maps land and ocean along the west african coast.

1508 The Pope herralds the treaty of tordesillas just when Italy establishes her first colonial possession, trade post in Nouakchott africa. Doge Leonardo Loredan a peacemaker and visionary passes away and a new Doge is elected. Piero Soderino would lead the fledgling Italy for the next several years.

1509 Explorer Grada leaves with five ships and returns with only one left. Exploration is not going well for Italy.

1510 Savoy is annexed peacefully by Italy. Native in Nouakchott destory the only Italian trade post. In just a months time in october the alliance between France/Italy/papal states expires and emediately Italy invades the papal states who are without an ally. then Italy takes leadership role in a new alliance with France.

1511 War with the Papal states goes fairly well

1512 Rome is taken but the Papal states fights on in a bitter war.

1513 Italy defeats the papal states and annexes them. The Pope is left alone for now however.

(1514-1523 on page 3 of Italy AAR)

1514 While the venice COT declined, debates in the senate rage over how Italy should deal with the papacy and religion. Before that could be settled, France went to war on Austria so italy was forced to join to Pieros dismay.

1515 The reformation takes place in germany. Italy soundly defeats austria but Piero signs a white peace with them and he is ridiculed for it by the senate.

1516 France annexes navarra while Italy faces revolts at home from savoy and papal territories. However Doge Piero has his eyes on naples and invades that year.

1517 A new Doge is elected, Ludovico of milan inherits the war against Naples. Initial success against naples turns to a fiasco in the territory of apulia.

1518 continued military woes plague italy in apulia where the naples fortress refuses to fall.

1519 Ludovico gives little support to the army and while russia annexes the golden horde, Italy still cannot defeat Naples completely.

1520 With more revolts springing up in Italy, Naples is finally taken and annexed to the Republic. Now only spain has the remaining Italian homelands of sicily and sardinia. Ludovico begins to improve relations with Poland and Hungary.

1521 Senator Theobaldo Fournieri is elected Doge. He emediately persicutes orthodox christians in the med islands. this brings many more revolts all accross Italy from savoy to naples to corfu.

1522 Fournieri replaces the old Pope with a new Italian Pope herralding a new age for the papacy. continued revolts plague italy.

1523 Doge fournieri is voted out of power by senate and replaced with Doge Andrea Gritti of venice. he stops persicuting orthodox but the revolts in savoy and naples continue.

1524 With massive revolts in savoy and naples, Gritti beefs up the army. Italy reaches late renaisance period.(PAGE 4)

1525 Though italy is essentially at peace, she fights a virtual civil war with many revolts taking place draining her army. Relations with spain plummet after rumors they are aiding rebels in Italy.(PAGE 4)

1526 Several more revolts rock the country, though marginal improvments are made to infrastructure.(PAGE 4)

1527 Relations with france suffer after a scandal in Doge Grittis court. (PAGE 4)

1528 Roman council begins to take shape, a left wing movement in senate to dissolve the republic and reshape the roman empire. Inflation begins to climb as Italy continues to struggle during its peaceful period.(PAGE 5)

1529 Doge Gritti reduces army spending in favor of filling the treasury.(PAGE 5)

1530 New Doge elected, Allesandro de Medici wins the election under scandal. the government begins to suffer as the senate falls into confusion over Italies future and present circumstances. More trouble comes when France declares war on england and austria. Italy joins in the war but its army is extrememly unprepared. Austrian forces overwhelm Italy and take Milan and istria.(PAGE 5)

1531 France comes to help Italy as massive battles rage. Italy sacks Vienna and the tide of war turns in favor of Italy. War seems to help save the Republic as Italy rallies around the doge and his advisors rather than embracing the Roman council radical ideals. France drops its support of the Roman council and begins supporting the Republicans again.(PAGE 5)

1532 After more bitter war, austria cedes Tyrol, Salzburg and Odenburg to Italy for peace. Italy is not at peace for long though as Spain declares war on Italy dragging yet again austria and now Helvetia in the war against Italy. (PAGE 5)

1533 Austria is beaten back easily while spain goes after french territory. (PAGE 6)

1534 Italy goes after sicily while spain turns up the heat by attacking Italy lands. Austria sues for peace and cedes cornolia to Italy. (PAGE 6)

1535 Italies war machine heats up amid more revolts and war. The war against Spain also increases as Italy controls Madrid and sicily and annexes Helvetia. (PAGE 6)

1536 Spain surrenders giving Sicily to Italy for peace. more revolts continue to plague Italy.(PAGE 6)

As senate participation increases, so would herrald a new era of Doges for Italy and a revival of the Republic.

1537-1551 The glorious war hero Mariani leads Italy

After the wars Italy fought so bravely and victoriously. The mastermind behind the wars success was Mariani and he was elected Doge in 1537

1537 With more revolts in the conquered territories popping up and mariani making sure they were crushed. The colonization of the world became a priority at last. (PAGE 7)

1538 More colonization and revolts and nova scotia was almost lost to natives.(PAGE 7)

1539 Infrastructure of the country is improved as the economy hits new heights thanks to new territories.(PAGE 7)

1540 Italy expands its holdings in north america which pressures the english. (PAGE 7)

1541 More colonial expansion for Italy. revolts tarnish the peaceful prosperity of the growing empire. (PAGE 7)

1542 Turkey nearly doubles in size to Italies displeasure and more revolts weaken italian stability. (PAGE 10)

1543 General Grassi joins italy in hopes to compete with spain in the new world, this while spain has taken over the aztecs and is at war with the inca (PAGE 10)

1544 Italy plans to try and get a piece of south america before spain takes it all. Grassi sent to do the task. Tensions grow with england over north american colonies. (PAGE 10)

1545 Italy declares war on the Inca empire, beginning the race for gold between Italy and Spain. Grassi leads the charge against the Inca. This would lead to overflowing tensions in europe that start the next Spanish-Italian war and then 1st Anglo-Italian war. (PAGE 10)

1546 Grassi loses ground against the Inca. Italy takes control of north america from the english. Austria surrenders to Italy once again. Italian navy proves it is king of the seas over england and spain. (PAGE 10)

1547 Spain surrenders sardinia to Italy for peace. Poland and Hungary invade Italy in a surprise move, Italy is overwhelmed quickly and near total defeat but by shear luck Italy pulls off a victory in magyar and sues for peace.(PAGE 12)

1548 War against england continues with few battles, only struggles in north american colonies and naval battles. Italy drastically improves relations with Poland and Hungary (PAGE 14)

1549 England demands money from Italy for peace but its refused dispite no clear victor in the war. Jean Calvin preaches heresy and helvetia becomes reformist. (PAGE 14)

1550 Massive revolts rock all of Italy as the war against England becomes unpopular and long. Grassi begins to gain ground in south america and the war against the inca heats up.(PAGE 14)

1551 More revolts in Italy severly drain the economy and army and Italy is forced to pay money to england for peace. The only stain on Marianis glorious career.(PAGE 14)

with the end of 1551 elections were held for a new doge so ending the long and glorious reign of Doge Mariani builder of the empire

1552-1561 From pawn to super power, Italy takes the lead

The new elected Doge Misha of umbria had visions of glory for Italy and it would lead the nation to greater heights that no other nation had ever seen.

1552 Italy fuels the war against the inca in hopes of grabbing all the gold they offer. Gen Grassi shows his brilliance against the much larger incan armies.(PAGE 15 AND 16)

1553 Misha incorperates a new budget plan that brings new technology to Italy. Grassi continues sluggishly against the incan. The stakes get higher now as Spain declares war on the incas again and attack from the south. The race for power continues between Spain and Italy.

1554 Italy struggles in south america as unmapped territory and guarilla tactics slow the war down. The Pope takes a hard stand against the new heretics the reformists.(PAGE 19)

1555 Italy finally makes huge strides against the inca and meets up with the spanish there. Italy annexes most of the inca lands after spain takes its piece. Italy fights against treaty of tordesillas and the spanish and the Pope refuses to cooperate with the Italian government. The Medici family opens up the banks of Italy and loans begin to flow to the french. Italies economy increases 50% in just two years after the defeating the inca. Italy and Spain now are equal rivals in the race to rule the new world and in power in Europe.

1556 Revolts in the lowlands plague Spain and Austria while Italy expands further. The scandal of a witches spell leads to the death of both Spain and Austrias leaders throwing europe in conflict yet again.

1557 Spain using the treaty of tordesillas attempts to take Italian lands in south america. Failing to do so, Spain calls on its allies and declares war against Italy and her allies now including Poland and Hungary. Europe is thrust deeper in war later that year when England and her allies declare war on Italy. (PAGE 26 AND 27)

1558 The much improved Italian armies led by the invincible and famous Carolus Rex crush Spain and Austria. Most of spain and portugals posessions in south america are lost thanks to General Storeys rampage of war there. (PAGE 29)

1559 Italy defeats Spain in the war and gains land in iberia and gold in south america. This one act catapults Italy way past Spain in the power bar of the world (italy takes lead in victory points for first time) (PAGE 31 AND 32)

1560 Italy continues war on England and Portugal at an advantage in both of them. Italies allies france/poland/hungary struggle against enemies in the war.(PAGE 34)

1561 White peace is gotten with england and her allies. However Portugal surrenders Tangiers, Oporto and colony curitiba to Italy. On a sad note, the great general Carolus Rex dies after a long service with Italy.(PAGE 35)

with italy now the strongest colonial power in the world, it would not be long before more troubles rear their ugly head, italies adventure was just beginning.

1562-1564 Doge By-Tor Xanadu and expansion

1562 (PAGE 40)
A new Doge was elected in true Italian Republic style. The senators all cast there votes for who would lead the country next (system taken from old venice) and By-Tor was most trusted to lead.

Italy was on a mission to explore as much as possible in the race to colonize the new expansive world. Da Raguso and Captian Crunch did this on land and sea. This while Spain beat up on France and the lowlands of austria, continued to rebel calling themselves Dutch. Italy also emerged as a major merchant player with a monopoly in mexico city.

1563 (PAGE 42 AND 43)
More exploration around the world and Doge By-Tor reforms the army with cavalry. However the highlight of the year was spain using the treaty of tordesillas against Italian colonies and then the sudden assasination of King Felipe of Spain. The new government of spain seemed cooperative with Italy but not much changed except for a land swap between them. Italy would gain key mexican territories and spain get back two iberian territories.

1564 (PAGE 45 AND 47)
With the economy booming, Italy colonized more of north america as did england and france. South america was being fortified due to spanish incursions.
