Hi, Im going to attempt to unify Italy in VIP. I want to know whats the best/fastest way to unify Italy. Does anyone have any good tips or strategies for me? What country is best suited to unify it? In Vanilla I would always use Sardinia Piedmont but now im leaning towards Two Sicillies because I hate having to give Savoy and Nice to France.

ANy help would be appreciated thanks.

I just unified Italy as Two Sicilies in the latest VIP. I did it as follows:
- Conservative government to allow Capitalist-led industrialisation, using huge population reserves in agricultural RGOs like Napoli/Naples.
- War against one of the Italian minors allied with Papal States to secure more South Italian provinces.
- This will help your Prestige, so that you can take the lead in any alliances to avoid premature peace.
- Big military expansion in time for the Lombardian-Venezian revolution.
- Full-hearted support for the Revolution.
- Send armies to defend Venezia so that the defeat chain doesn't start. Lombardia is a lower priority because they normally do quite well and get more support from Sardinia-Piedmont.
- Austria is mountainous so it's tough to invade with 1840s army technology. Occupy the northern Balkans instead, like Slovenia and Croatia.
- Austria is EXTREMELY reluctant to agree peace - its AI prefers total war - but they should accept a white peace eventually. That's all you need. As long as they haven't annexed or satellited one of the revolter Italian states, you unify Italy soon afterwards with Lombardia AND Venezia AND French Savoy...
- ... but you have to fix an error in VIP files first. Replace line 315 in VIP_TwoSicilies.txt with:
Code:
		OR = {
			constitution = { country = SAR type = democracy }
			constitution = { country = SAR type = constitutional_monarchy }
			}
- You have unified Italy as a radical liberal democratic state - probably the only victory for the liberals of 1848, in fact - under the leadership of one of the most reactionary, reluctant participants in the RL unification. Congratulations!

Very interesting thank you. I will try this strategy.

Okay, first, sorry for jumping into this thread and asking my own question. But I figured it would save me having to make an entirely different thread for the same general topic.

My query concerns the revolution against Austria specifically. I have managed to defend Venezia successfully, gaining them a white peace with Austria. However, while I am still defending Lombardia (successfully and with having claimed two Austrian regions) the Austrians still manage to somehow put down the revolutions. Even though they have no land from either, and are at peace with Venezia and have lost ground, the revolution still fails in early January 1848.

What's a man to do to get rid of them pesky Austrians?

For the AI-AI situations you just have to make sure that AUS doesn't control or own any Venetian or Lombardian land (from a brief glance at that event). See AUS 111069 for more details. Not sure why this wouldn;t be the case for you unless AUS has got them too desperate.

They don't occupy any land whatsoever. In fact, Lombardy has control over two Austrian regions, and Venetia are at peace with them.

I have no idea what all the stuff at AUS 111069 means really. I don't dabble with the codes much. It may as well be in moon speak to me.
