Italian unification(The austrian question)

I've been playing as Sardinia-Piedmont, with the determination to unite Italy. I didn't know there was an actual event for it, but all the better since I inherited the navy of the Two Sicilies. How do you get around Austria though? The alliance with the french doesn't do much good since they don't have access. I managed to get Zurich from the swiss in a peace deal and traded it to the French. They marched right into Austria and spread like a plague. Eventually though they settled with Austria and left me out to dry. I tried decisive battles with the Austrians, surrounding them and even drew them into my own territory to eliminate them. Even so there was never more than 20% in my favor at the peace negotiation. I suppose I could draw them further into italy to form a bulge and surround individual forces. Any hints on winning the northern provinces from Austria?

I just remained amiable with the Austrians and bought all their Italian land in exchange for some North African provinces i conquered, naval techs, and cash. Im currently playing this game actually, its quite fun. Just slaughtered the French at Marseilles!

Austria does tend to be hard to beat, what with their large armies and over-powered economy. I wrote an event which gives Italy the Austrian provinces when the new nation is formed. It's kinda cheap, but it works almost every time.

When I've seen Italy formed France always goes through S-P and takes the Austrian land for them. Normally only 2 or 3 provinces per war, but it's better than nothing.

As you've noticed you need help from other nations to beat Austria.

If you can't get that, perhaps taking some North African nations will give you the necessary manpower.

- And as always take the shortest route to the capitol (then satelite Austria as that will give you all the needed provinces AND a peaceful Austria)
