I conquered the whole peninsula except for Sardinia 'cause they were France's best buddies. Then the Crimean war went really badly for the Sardinians -- Sardinia proper (the island) rebelled, and their military just disappeared. So I attack. I got the unification event and then a few weird things happens.

First my BB shot up to 27. I was bad, but not that bad. Do you get BB from the unification event?

Second I didn't get ownership of the island of Sardinia. The Unification event destroyed Sardinia-Piedmont, but the game immediately recreated them. They got ownership and control of the island of Sardinia. And on the diplomatic front they got a peace treaty with me and an independence guarantee from the French. Has that happened to anybody else?

As far as the "not owning Sardinia"--it's probably because it was occupied by rebels. You annexed Sardinia by event (which is probably why you got so much badboy, BTW), but rebel held Sardinia rebelled and declared independence immediately. Because annexation forms a peace treaty between the combatants, even though one of them no longer exists, you had a peace treaty with Sardinia. (I've seen this happen with ordinary annexations as well)

That explains it.

I want that island, but they've got an independence guarantee from France. Will it ever expire?

After five years, IIRC. Though the French AI might be coded to protect them and renew it.

What years is it? You should help Prussia in 1870 (get into alliance before hand), and then after they take Paris, you are compensated nicely by event... Corsica, Nice, Chambery, Annecy... all become yours. See, they tried to be a greedy land grabber by backing Sardinia-Piedmont... but taking land from them once the unification happened. Now is Italy's chance to get them back, and then some.

As for Sardinia... just go and annex it during the Franco-Prussian war. You'll already be at war with France anyway. Not sure if Sardinia is part of the compensation event, since usually Italy already has it. So, just go and snatch it up, at that time.

Also you should get in on the 1866 action w/ against Austria. Before Prussia takes the 6(?) key provinces that will end the war in their favor, make sure to sue for peace, and at least try to get the 4 cores. Maybe some indemnities, too - if you can. But land is always better, if it has enough national culture POPs.

Then sometime in the mid/late-1870s, Russia will DoW the Ottomans... at which point you get a head start in Libya, maybe even Egypt, etc.....

I went back to a pre-Unification save, liberated Sardinia from the rebels, and satellited them. The new plan is to suck up to France so I can sell them Nice, Chambery, and Annecy for a huge pile of cash and techs.

I hadn't thought of an alliance with Prussia, but it is a logical choice. It's 1862 so I've got a little time. I'd prefer to satellite the Austrians. It's so much simpler than dealing with the list of provinces in the diplomacy screen.

I've got a nice foothold in Africa. I have Tunisia already, and the Egyptians only have their capital left. The Ethiopians are next on the list. Maybe Algeria too.

The Ottomans won't be pushovers. They're still civilized, and AFAIK have not lost a single province. To anybody. My Navy sucks, and I can't build it up too quickly because there's no Artillery on the world market.

That's the trouble with being Italy. The whole country is vulnerable to attack from the sea. It's very easy to not notice 10,000 enemy troops besieging capital because you are busy coordinating a 15-division assault on their capital.
