Was the fall of the Byzantine Empire essential for the Renaissance to have happened? With the fall, Greek scholars and such fled to parts of Italy with knowledge of antiquity, etc.

The Renaissance was based more on Roman models than Greek ones. Any Italian of the Middle Ages grew up surrounded by evidence of Roman greatness (roads, aqueducts, buildings), and didn't need Greek scholars around to remind him. That being said, the sudden influx of Greek manuscripts after the fall of Constantinople did provide Italy with added creative energy and models, and so did add to the spendour of the Renaissance.
do you mean without Greeks that moved to Italy after the fall of Constantinople or the Greek heritage as a whole?
