Ordinarily it's not possible to appoint or replace a general commanding an army in hostile territory. Ordinarily this is not a problem, but when a general commanding an army besieging a fortress dies the inability to replace them is rather frustrating. I think that the death of a general leading an army in hostile territory should create a brief period in which a new general can be appointed to lead that army. This is mainly a convenience feature, since it's almost always possible to detach a unit, move it into a nearby controlled province, appoint a general, and then send it to rejoin the siege.
