No, it is not possible to sort the mechs in the mechbay.
The inability to do this is baffling; It is one of the most basic types of expected UI interaction, both for aesthetical and practical reasons.
When you get up to 18 slots of which you need to choose 4 and are told of the benefits of having multiple mechs of the same type differently equipped for different tasks, any user would expect to be able to rearrange the mechs to his own system rather than be assigned a fixed slot based on state of the mechbay upon creation.
I asked about this in the recent AMA and why we couldn't just drag and drop mechs in the mechlab to sort them as we wanted to, something that I'd have thought would be a fairly simple interaction to code, and the answer was a truly baffling:

3) Specifically drag and drop "isn't working because REASONS" as our UI Engineer said. I suspect unity does not make it easy, so I dunno how that'll land.
Well, that's what you get when you ask a designer a question that's technical.
I fully expect HBS to add this expected UI functionality at some time, as it is basic and one of a fairly large number of minor UI oversights that don't matter much individually but all add up, either in a patch one of these days or with a sequel/DLC. It is just too bloody stupid without.
