A lot of names in Vicky is accurate to the time period, Reval not Tallinn, German names for places now in Poland, and more. But why is Istanbul not Constantinople? I see that it may be because it is Turkish in game, but didnt the rest of the world call it Constantinople more or less?

The Ottoman government also called it Constantinople (well, Kostantiniyye in Turkish). Istanbul was a popular name for a long time, but it wasn't until Ataturk that it was officially renamed to Istanbul, and the Turkish government began requesting that foreign governments use Istanbul in official documents.

So, it probably should be Constantinople or Kostantiniyye at game start (I'd prefer Constantinople, as it's so well known, similar reasoning is why Guangdong is called Canton), with the name changing to Istanbul if/when the Ottoman dynasty falls.

Well it would make Turkish players going nuts if you make it flatout Constantinople but it is being Istanbul in this timeframe feels weird at the most. I think Kostantiniyye would be a decent compromise

The reasoning may surprise most of you, and it has nothing to do with Turkey nor the Ottomans. The reason is actually because of all the Byzantophiles in the world, many of which love Paradox games. It's because of them that Greece has the option to restore the Byzantine Empire, and it's because of that decision that Constantinople is called Istanbul at the game's start, so that if/when Greece does restore the Byzantine Empire(never by the hands of the AI, only a player if he chooses to go that route with Greece) the city of Istanbul can change its name back to Constantinople to emphasize its Greek origin and the restoration of the Byzantine Empire.

Wow, that is interesting. I guess that could have been Konstantiniyye-->Constantinople as well, but whatever.

Making it Kostantiniyye would have the same effect. And the Turkish player would be able to get the same satisfaction turning it into Istanbul.

Not sure why you're blaming me, as I don't work for Paradox. Regardless, why would a Turkish player want to turn the province into Istanbul? That would mean dismantling the Ottoman Empire which typically means you're in a bad position, unless for some reason you want rebels to break your country to turn Communist/Fascist/Democratic even though HM's government is the best form of government in the game.

The name should be Constantinople. This game uses English names for all provinces (Rome, Leghorn etc.) There are probably exceptions, but why create a new one? If they really wanted to emphasise the greekness of the city after forming the Byzantine Empire, it can rather be renamed to Konstantinoúpoli. A decision for renaming it to Istanbul should be available for Turkey if they have any other government than Monarchy.

I'm not blaming you, I'm just arguing. And, make turning Konstantiniyye into Istanbul an event for a "modernization" of the empire, not just when it collapses into Turkey.

I'm just saying that by that argument about how the game is designed for Byzantophilles, it would be way better and more logical to have it as Konstantiniyye, so I don't think it holds truth very well.

The real issue with this name problem is unchangeable names. Russia takes Outer Manchuria from China, renames the state to Primorye and capital Haishenwai to Vladivostok. But no matter if China reconquers it, the Russian names are permanently fixed and going to stay. Same as Alsace-Lorraine/Elsass-Lothringen thing for France.

Not to mention it breaks saves and any new games. You have to reload to fix it.

Victoria 3 should really not have these stupid and lazy issues.

Actually I might be crazy but I'm pretty sure Alsace-Lorraine can be renamed.

You are correct. France has a decision to rename Elsaß-Lothringen.

Too bad they forgot about every other name on the planet, especially Outer Manchuria. Eurocentricism is strong in this game.

What? You would like events to change the name of every province in the game to suit the name the owner would use? Not happening, too much work for too little gain, and all of that performance loss...

We'll probably get dynamic names ala EUIV whenever Vicky 3 comes.
Don't be so sure about that. Lots of features are left for one game, like the glorious dynamic COUNTRY names in Victoria II. If we could only have something like that in EUIV...

What? You would like events to change the name of every province in the game to suit the name the owner would use? Not happening, too much work for too little gain, and all of that performance loss...

Not every province, only those that get changed by occupation or other events. Outer Manchuria changes into Prymore when Russia spheres Manchuria and selects its decision. If China reconquers the province from Russia it remains as Prymore rather than return to Outer Manchuria. That makes no sense whatsoever and should change. Alsace Lorraine is the same case, but because both nations are European: France and Germany, than Paradox added a decision for France to revert the province from the German name back to the French name. Will Steel, and I agree with him, simply want this option for all provinces that get their name changed if the original owner(at the game's start that is) reconquers those provinces since they still have cores on them.
