Gyllenheim's expedition was a risky venture that could reap large rewards at best, at worst it would be a complete failure, loss of 3 highly expensive ships and 3,000 of the best men in the army. Not only would our progress in the war be set back, but the public's morale would drop to a level where they might demand peace.
I spent several weeks convincing the Knesset of the possibilities of this expedetion. The left wing liberals, always seeking gains and always wanting to try something new, were as always, quite for it. But, the majority of the seats were held by the coalition of the different, more conservative parties. Finally, after a speech by the great General Netanyahu himself, they agreed.
Scheffer had already pulled his commands together, they were ready to ship out. The ships had been loaded, the officers briefed, everyone was ready.
But then, as if incited by the Turks, the Palestinians rose up. Over 18,000 of them took up weapons in Judea. Netanyahu was nearly killed returning to his army, which was called in. After 4,000 casulaties, the revolt was finally put down without too much collateral damage.
Scheffer's expedition was finally off. He arrived several weeks later after the journey across the seas. He sent scouting parties ashore on the island of Gander and confirmed that local militia garrisioned the fort and that no French regulars were to be found.
His troops marched into town with the band playing, and the French king signed a white peace not long after.
Scheffer was back in command by October of that year, a month which became scary to a point for the Israeli people.
