Playing as GER, I have taken Moscow and isolated Sverdlovsk, the new capital. SOV has about 35 divisions (now out of supply). Would it not be better to leave Sverdlovsk alone as that splits their IC (in Sverdlovsk) from the resources needed to fuel it (to the East)?

Or am I missing something?

Unlikely to be. A nation's IC is considered to be entirely in its capital for the purpose of being supplied with resources and many nations, especially Russia, will have enormous stockplies with which to run those industries for months even if all resource income were to be cut off.

Isolating a capital does have the benefit of forcing all of the nations troops out of supply unless they can find another supply source, like an ally, but most better players consider that a ridiculous exploit and do not use it, and it can create an undefeatable monster stack if you do that to Moscow.

So, all in all, no, there is very little benefit to isolating a capital.

The only advantage to keeping a capital isolated is that all new units must deploy there. This can allow you to prevent them from deploying elsewhere and causing you trouble.

It does NOT put other units out of supply. This was addressed long ago. Any block of 7? provinces will be supplied by the capital whether connected or not.

But if you have already taken their 1st capital, then you will have taken their stockpile, no?

IIRC when you take a countries capital, without annexing you get 50% of their national stockpile. There is a chance I am wrong, please correct me if I am.

It will make all other units out of supplies. Try it yourself.

1. Its an exploit. As cheesy as it gets.
2. Most capitals include large parts of enemy IC and the stockpile might be valueable for you.
3. Some capitals are cities and it might not be nice to see him deploy all his new units into urban terrain and let them dig in there. Not only does this make futur attacks difficult, but it also forces a rather large force of your own to stay behind.

The trick is not to allow the AI to have any troop in their capital. When it is isolated, you must destroy all of the troops in that province by attacking it. When victory is achieved (and the isolated troops were destroyed), cancel the move order such that the capital will still belong to the AI opponent.

Leave a few troops behind to kill any newly placed troops. So everytime the AI places anything on that province, gang them up using your garrison. Don't forget to cancel attack after you have won.

This is a big exploit though so use it if you want to ruin your game!
