  • Europa Universalis IV
Hello there!

I am a really big fan of paradox strategy games and especially the EU series but for some reason I have missed the EU: Rome title until now.

I have watched some videos about it on utube and became tempted to buy the game.

I have one question however: I mainly intend to play with the Romans (as most of us do I assume) but seeing that even from the earliest possible start Rome is already a "great power" in the area I fear that playing against the AI (even on higher difficulty settings) wont pose much of a challange.

Can anyone confirm (or refute) this?

thank you

Once you defeat the Carthagians the only power which can put up a good fight against you are the Seleucids or Roman rebels (if you allow enough important Romans to become unhappy). Personally I'm hoping that if we will ever see Rome 2 it will have earlier start date where you have to unite Italy and there will be more provinces and more states, so there will be more challenge.

The game can be much more challenging if you play for example as one the tribes in Britain or Gaul. But almost all great powers are rather easy to play once you win the initial wars and become number 1 great power.

Thanks for the quick reply.

This is exactly what I was worried about.

I find it strange that the game received numerous patches, an expansion and a gold release and this issue hasnt been adressed at all. Even if not making an earlier start date, they could have at least split rome into multiple factions so the player wouldnt have to start the game as a 9 province monster.

So basically it isnt really worth playing the romans.. Which is a deal breaker for me in an ancient rome themed game..

Romans are worth playing when you're still new to the game. Playing as Romans is like playing EUIV as France, it can be fun but it's not really challenging. Best part of the experience are the civil wars, which can bring real challenge to the Roman game, but once you get good at the game you can usually minimize the risks of civil war spreading to really disastrous proportions.

Does the Epigoni mod work with the latest beta patch? Hell, do any of the Rome mods support the new patch?

I know my mod works, atleast I have not noticed anything during my admittedly brief testing (only got around to downloading the latest beta earlier this week). Considering what it changes the other mods should work pretty much as well as they did with the previous beta but I haven't checked it myself (not saying much for Epigoni as sadly I had problems with it then, and for the other mods I don't have the most recent versions).
