I have been looking for a fun start that lets me jump right into the economics of the game without having to worry about imminent crisis just after clicking play... (I do not play for difficulty, I only care about having fun; i get enough difficulty out of course work, heh... Stem student...)

I remember before attempting to play britain and they had an actual colony in canada, as well as several valuable subject nations that were not protectorates... I load up the same britain now, and they are severely overextended. Their only subject nations are all protectorates in india...

What happened?

Actually, I played a custom game recently; imported Prydain from CK2. Apparently, the imported games only work on previous versions. How were the colonies changed?

Cause with Prydain, a colonial nation formed in Brazil after I managed to establish just a few colonies.

I have common sense, but no other DLCs.

Conquest of Paradise was the DLC that CN's were introduced with, but you don't actually require it for the Colonial Nations, my mistake. This was a LONG time ago however.

Anyway your issue is more with the balance of the game in later start games, right? Well they're all out of balance now, as new mechanics and content is added, all other starting dates aren't rebalanced to accommodate these changes.

What you describe is a bug that tends to happen if you move the start date both backwards and forwards. If you go directly to the start date you want you should have colonial subjects.
If you played the game before protectorates was added England had vassals instead in India but it's wad that they are all protectorates now though :)

Things seem to work out fine with Hearts of Iron IV, which doesn't allow for custom start dates.

There are two aspects to the problem.

One, which can fairly readily be fixed when it is noticed and reported, is that there are likely to be more errors of detail in later dates than in the main start date.

The other, which involves crawling-horror debugging, is that moving the date backwards screws everything up. Imperial election results become nonsense.

Until such time as effort is available to resolve the second, it would probably make sense to remove the "step backwards" buttons from the start date selector, and reject clicking on a bookmark earlier than the current date.

Moving backwards has not worked without issue for at-least as long as I've worked here (a bit more than 2 years) unfortunately and that's a bug that is both tricky and of very low priority due to how few actually play the later start dates. As far as I know it's not something we don't want to fix but it is of lower priority than just about any other code bug if going by the number of people impacted (I can't give numbers on how many play the non 1444.11.11 starts but as we've said before that it is very, very low).

Fixing errors in the setup of the later start dates on the other hand is something we do as they are reported. It's not the highest priority but it does get done (getting reports for such bugs however is very, very rare). I personally like the ability to pick any date a lot (even if I also end up playing the earliest possible start more or less always).
We also do frequently do update later start dates for new mechanics (you will for instance find base institution spread in later starts) or map expansions but their balancing is more or less entirely based around the 1444 start date that all but a handful people actually use :)

You might want to add a warning in the UI when people move the date back. There's a lot of confusion about this all the time...

"Moving backwards breaks stuff" is an inherited flaw of EU3, as far as I know...

Can you share why you cant share the data?

There are no non-steam versions of EU4 but it data is collected regardless of if you play with steam running or not.
