I looked up the exploit link on Reddit. bbqftw did it using Ainu as the vassal. You can't use a japanese subject because they will then make Kyoto their capital and you can't ask for it back. For me to use it , I will need to vassalize Ainu first, and then grant them a link to Kyoto . Since I am already at war with Hosokawa and Ando , this is a big hassle.

So I will resist the dark side , not through sheer willpower, but through laziness ;)
It's like that famous quote from Star Wars Ep. 3, when Palpatine and Anakin were talking about the powers of the dark side.

Palpatine - "Learn to use the Dark Side of the [game mechanics] and you will be able to save your [run] from certain [amounts of low development provinces]."

Anakin - "Yeah, but that'd be annoying, getting a new light saber color and all that. I think I'm good resisting that temptation."

1630': Two versus One

I left the last chapter with Atlantis waging war on Ottomans and Russia. The opening phase of that war saw several naval battles around the Aegean that ended with the Ottoman fleet dispersed and in hiding. With the sea lanes secured, I decided to take the offensive by transferring the army from Greece to the Batlic. I manage to land in INgermanland and amazingly I am not challenged until I take Pskov :
U98gEbx.png

The Ottomans threaten my northern army, but mysteriously withdraw. Maybe the offensive I started on one of their "tentacles" drew them away :

vcP1OJ8.png

(screenshot of my armies attacking on either side of the Red sea. When Ottomans attack either side, we will shift troops to the other side using transports)
The purpose of occupying Ottoman land was to drive up their war exhaustion and push the WS even higher.
Back on the Northern front, I manage to take Novgorod. And still unchallenged, push to Moskva:
FMGEM46.png

Again, for unknown reasons, the Russians and Ottomans do not relieve the siege of the RUssian city , and Moskva falls in 1633 ( in case they decided to attack, I was ready to peace out the Russians at short notice). Just 10 years after Gyldenpalm's death, my lesser generals have now scored an important success on land.
WIth Moscow's fall, I conclude a separate peace , exiling the Ottoman stacks in the process :):
tQnunZG.png

IN the peace I get reparations and break the alliance between the Turks and the Russians. Hopefully they will end up at war soon.

As for the Ottomans, I am waging a war of war exhaustion with them . I blockade as much of their coast as possible, and keep up the occupation and looting pressure by occupying their eastern tentacels ( Ethiopia, Arabia, Persia) , where movement by sea allows my troops to stay ahead of them .
YCS6oMb.png

(war strategy against the Ottomans - I manage to occupy provinces despite inferior numbers thanks to mobility conferred by sea transports)

My intention was to keep up the war with Ottomans until the truce with Japan expired in 1635 , with the aim of driving their WE as high as possible. I know by that point that they have taken several loans, and the war was hurting them. But when suddenly their treasury jumps from 1.2 K to 2.1 K , I knew they had just taken a fresh loan, and I decide to take that money for myself in the peace:
QOOmU2h.png

(Peace with Ottomans. Not a crushing defeat, but they still end up weaker for next time - inset shows their debt ballooning to 9000 ducats as they borrow to embrace Global Trade)

This war marks a milestone, as I took on a big land opponent and won. I didn't gain much land, but more importantly , I prevented the rival great powers from further growth.
Soon after the long truce in Japan is out, and I declare on Ando:
2gOLcoo.png

(DOW on Ando. Ando was beating Hosokawa in a japanese civil war )

Smashing the low tech Japanese is a piece of cake. My 2/1/2 king is made a general and he smashes the Japanese with ease:
KfdJlAu.png

To maximize the WS against ANdo, I declare on Hosokawa as well:
QSP45EG.png

This allows a harsh peace to be imposed on the north Japanese:
kuJrTzd.png

In the peace, I try as much as possible to take entire Areas to be stated up later .

Then it is peace with the Southern Japanese, followed by release of one new vassal and feeding of an existing vassal:
bL9qS0H.png

Again I use state boundaries to guide the distribution of provinces. I stay away from Kyushu island which has a different culture.

With Japan conquered, I move the armies slightly south and overrun Ternate, who had colonized the South part of the Philippines:
rxrefQH.png

(quick war against animist Ternate)
Because Ternate's land is all colonies, I do not suffer over-extension and so annexing them is straightforward. This brings us to 1640, and my army is poised to declare on another animist nation in Moluccas:
KdH56ea.png

(imminent targets of expansion in INdonesia - plan is to start with animists, then Hindus, and finish with Sunnis who would likely put Ottomans in Coalition )

While I eye expansion in INdonesia, I am also laying groundwork for resumption of war in Europe:
Mo6JvCr.png

Screenshot shows potential vassalization options in the Baltic that can allow me to achieve For Odin without breaking the Islands-only rule except at the very end. Once I take Gotland from Sweden, I can fabricate on Livonian order and vassalize them in one war (have to beat their PLC ally first, but that is doable). Or I can force Lubeck to spit out Denmark from Shleswig, then DOW them in 5 years and vassalize them. Once force converted, I can reconquer their cores from Sweden and Norway with low AE . My only concern is they would convert away from Norse once they have a lot of CHristian land ( or do vassals never convert away from their overlord's religion?) Or I can revive the Teutonic Order. Again, because I cannot annex-convert-release , will need to force vassalize and force convert .
I think Denmark is the best way to go. Although at the moment I am building spy network in Livonian.

As for the Islands in the Pacific, I have colonized Hawai and good chunks of Australia and New Zealand already.
MYXr8uX.png

This is the current political world map with GP standings:
jSAMT7h.jpg

Of the goals I set out at the beginning of the run, this is the order I think they will end up getting achieved:

Become #1 GP
Finish the island quest
Become unrivalled power
Complete FOr Odin

Yes. Ottomans paid for the upgrade of my fleet , which was quite $$$$$$

heh, are you seriously suggesting you check the ledger for such an 'oppurtunity'?

i hadn't suspected you to micro/minmax that!

It showed up in the peace negotiations panel- suddenly I could ask for a lot more money, so I checked their debt to confirm where it came from. Generally I don't bother with the money part. BUt this was a different war. The aim was to hurt Ottomans , not just take land. I figured taking money hurts them more than taking some worthless islands.

no, they do not. DDRJake asked devs to fix that, and it got fixed. Vassals never use national decisions to go change religions.

I was hoping you would answer this question, and I like the reply !

AI , it seems they could easily beat you.
For my next run/AAR, I should move up to Hard or VH.

1640's: Molucca Malacca

After winning an Ottoman war and the second Japanese war in the last decade, I was poised to start conquering Indonesia in earnest. Buton is the next victim:
rSFMtKw.png

(annexation of Buton - note very slow progress of spy in Tidore)

I was aiming for Tidore next. But they started counter-espionage on me and it was taking my spy forever to fabricate a claim. So I switch gears to Europe, and declare on Lubeck who holds a Danish core in Schleswig:
rsk6nY7.png

(DOW on Lubeck to liberate Denmark - inset shows my second Ability of the age, 5% admin efficiency, just in time for fully coring Japanese provinces)

It is an easy war where we defeat Lubeck and their North German allies. I don't bother sieging Hamburg and Bremen for more money, but prefer to quickly conclude the peace ,so that I can start on the For Odin project as soon as possible:
hFcqEvm.png

(Denmark being released out of Lubeck )

Since I need to wait out the truce with Denmark, then DOW them to vassalize them, then force convert and then start to feed them Swedish and Norwegian land, I figured I might start now. And I not happy to see that after the peace, my truce with Denmark is 15 years:mad:!!!. I thought you got a 5 year truce with released nations. When did it change?
CVL9UK1.png

(screenshot showing Denmark truce going to 15 years).

I next try to ally Denmark and then break alliance to shorten the truce, but no luck. It remains till 1658, and therefore till the next chapter.

Back to Asia. I get a mission to wipe Makassar from the map, and I go ahead and do just that:
yYtCGTv.png

(brief war with Makassar, marred by the Comet event)

I follow with an attack on Sunda, who held the last big island in the Moluccas node:
uKvv8Ki.png

Another quick war, another land grab and another comet!:mad:

In the peace, I take the western part of Java island which holds a center of trade, and this gives me my 6th merchant. And a new coalition of Tidore and England.

Having secured the Moluccas node, I move on to the Malacca node and attack Brunei:
0ZNRswT.png

(DOW on Brunei, as we eclipse PLC as a rival . Nice!)

While I war Brunei, the other super-powers start wars of their own , I guess to keep up in the rankings ;):
XNEvHxb.png

(declarations of war from Ming, PLC and Ottomans)

It seems the Ottomans have recovered enough from my last war, that they are resuming expansion, despite having still 4600 ducats in debt.

My war with Brunei is easy, but I have to wait till cores from Sunda finish, before annexing more land:
13PGDgC.png

(Preace with Brunei+Sulu)
I go for maximum land . This will trigger a coalition, but with the largest powers in war now, I am protected for some time still.

And that brings us to 1650, when Manufactories spawned in Bohemia:
CBQZKc9.png

(screenshot of Manufactories progress, and GP rankings. we are only 16Dev behind Ottos)

I should be set to adopt Manufactories soon since I built several all over my realm ( including Caribbean and Japan) . If I embrace it before Ottomans , I would probably get ahead of them just based on that, if not conquest.

Only potential cloud on the horizon is the coalition coming back ( Ottomans will likely join as soon as they peace out Oman). If I go ahead with my plan to vassalize and force convert Denmark, then the coalition may grow to include Sweden. This may being some more excitement to what is starting to become an predictable run.

If I get no more Comets, then you must be right ;)

On a more serious note, I wonder what massive privateering in all nodes would do to the game. Since privateering wastes 60% of the pirate nation's trade, it is effectively a way to remove money out of the game. I am going to use the new ships to privateer in all the lucrative nodes ( Bordeaux, Ivory Coast, Zanzibar, Aden , Sevilla, Panama , Sind, Ceylon etc) where I do not have a substantial presence yet.

It's remarkable to see your progress. And how you fight the war vs everyone :) I have started similar run as Knights and I am spending my time making sure I don't offend anyone important, I am not in shape to fight any kind of coalitions. How do you manage to raid so successfully? It seems that most of the nodes are well protected from raiding due to everyone hunting for pirates...

I encountered pirate hunting only around Vijaynagar. Could be you are playing on a harder level?
Also having privateers in the node , whether the fleet doing the raiding or another one, will improve efficiency. Also being only one Norse means i can raid everyone. Knights have only Egypt and Ottos to raid until uou get a foothold farther west, right?

I'm on VH. Doesn't AI hunt pirates on lower levels? Or they don't have enough fleet for that? I've expanded and I can raid quite a lot, but Ottomans hunt pirates in all their nodes and in places like India, SE Asia and Baltics it seems like there's always someone hunting for pirates. It's possibly to occasionally get into gap when nobody does, but I didn't find any way of making the game alert me about that opportunity.

Of course I am right (always will :p)! Though that is an impressing fleet already you've got there, but I guess you can never have too many ships if you want to guard all the islands in the world.

They do hunt on normal difficulty. But not all the time. I'm sure you do these tricks, but i will detail my approach for other readers who may end up trying a raiding nation :
1)when my raiding fleet arrives in a sea tile, i hover the mouse over raid icon to check efficiency
2)if all provinces are at 75% or higher , will raid.
3)if not, set the raiding fleet on privateer in the node with low efficiency
4)wait for month tick. Check raiding efficiency on the node. If high enough, move the fleet back to sea tile. You should arrive before end of month. Then raid
5)if efficiency still low , bring another fleet to privateer as well.

For this to work, you need lots of light ships . While galleys can raid, they cant privateer (have to check whether a single light ship in a galley fleet makes all the galleys' guns count towardd pirate efficiency )

The funny thing is that the fleet is financially self supporting. Privateering pretty much pays for the maintenance of the entire fleet.

Spoiler has a current game picture ( 1659), which shows that I am protecting trade in Channel, while an independent Netherlands funnels trade there ( just like parats predicted). But merchants in SEA are starting to bring in good moolah.

(correction: picture has army maintenance highlighted instead of fleet maintenance by mistake. they happen to be about the same at the moment anyways)

Don't you funnel trade to your home node?
There isnt any red mark for steering activity in north sea or lübeck.

It also seems your whole trade setup is sub optimal.

No, I am not steering to London. I think I am better off collecting in NOrth Sea and Lubeck because I cannot secure an overwhelming portion of CHannel ( due to Netherlands' competition). I collect what I can in Lubeck/North Sea , and the rest gets steered by Netherlands anyways. Then I get another shot at it in Channel.

I once posted on this in the main form. It turns out it is rarely advantageous to steer.
