The way battles are portrayed in isolated island provinces in Hoi2 highlights, for me, the most pressing issue to be addressed in Hoi3.

Clearing Islands of an entrenched defender is an affair that historically took weeks, or even months, but in Hoi2, these battles often last no more than a few hours.

Suggested Solution?

Island battles should consist of two phases. One initial combat phase for the landing that would last a few hours, followed by a second combat phase modified to last weeks or months depending on factors such as troop ratios, supply, ability to reinforce and bombardments.

It seems doable, personally.

By the way, I believe the same thing should be done for major cities.

Hmmm....the battles should definately take longer.
But it should consider also Blitzkrieg attacks, so fast conquer must be also possible.
Maybe the more divisions are in battle and the more even or tied is the battle, the much longer it should take. (Starfire mod tried to compensate this a little bit)
Also event and terrain traits, weather a.s.o can influence this

i hope HOI3 is something similar to it.

The problem IMO in HoI2 was that units lost their org but strenght was quite good - many battles ended because off strenght and with almost none or low causlaties. Org should be harder to reduce and strenght should fall faster.
There were many mods making battles longer - i just hope paradox will use their experience.

My main probel is that I always found Island hopping slightly tedious, how you could fix this I have no idea, perhaps make Naval warfare more exciting, maybe countries could "Own" naval territories or something, I don't know...

The main problem is that the island hopping campaign was primarily air, naval, and tacitical level ground combat. None of which HoI2 does that well; or in the case of tactical level combat, does at all.

The naval thread has a lot of good ideas for making the Pacific War much better Naval wise, but it's going to be very hard for HoI to simulate a campaign where individual infantry battalions and fighter squadons can be very important.

maybe amphibiuos assault could change?
like u make assault and ure forces land and are on beaches but the enemy is still on the area. and fight continues. and not like now - when u are in prov it means that u have won or being defeated.
I would like to see stages of battles like in CK

I'm not sure what you mean by "most the game takes place in Europe", but in most of my HoI2 games, more of the game takes place in the Pacific Theater than is does in Europe. And the European theater is generally much more simplistic than the Pacific theater - and has been done much better in both HoI1 and 2 - so it would seem to make sense that one of the most glaring needs would be to improve the Pacific War.

The fact that probbly the most important feature of the Pacific War - naval aviation - isn't even IN HoI2 should make that obvious.

Removing some port facilites from all provinces and teaching the AI to handle this would be a good idea making certain coastal provinces more attractive than others would be nice.

The problem with island hopping is that it's not usefull or necessary in HoI/HoI2. You can load your troops onto ships in Los Angeles and then sail to mainland Japan and take a province there. Why bother with the stinking islands, unless you are out of range?
