First, I just think that Victoria just flat out requires more knowledge of history to play that zombie shooters or any other kinds of
games.

Perhaps it's unintentional, but this is exactly the type of elitism which nauseates me.

Victoria requires nothing other than a subjective taste and desire to play a more complicated game than pressing WASD. It's nothing to do with historic knowledge, requires no IQ boost and it takes no more (just a different) skill to play.

Taste and choice is not determined by intelligence, no matter how much we may wish it were to be.

No you didn't say it was right to go that direction, but you mentioned the increased revenue might make it possible. I fear that's true and that greater revenue from smaller sales might temporarily make the shrinking market cancel out.

However, I see less and less of Paradox as a prescence anywhere but this site and occasional articles on wargamer.com Without recognition, and without new blood then it's hard to see how new customers are going to materialize.

Perhaps the stink caused by China and a new HOI game might do the trick, provided it's well received.

If this is the way people percieved my previous comment, then I apologize. :eek:o I certainly didn't want to come off sounding elitist, and I certainly didn't want to nauseate anyone. But as to the intelligence thing--it's just my opinion. No offense intended. :)

Still, though, I see an intelligence that's quite remarkable in the people who play this game. Note that I never said that people who play other kinds of games aren't just as intelligent. The people who make mods to Doom and Quake and Grand Theft Auto and everything else have to have the same skill as the people who make mods to Paradox games (probably more so, because Paradox makes it easy). But they look for different kinds of things. There's nothing wrong with zombie shooting, and there's nothing wrong with saying that most people who play this game successfully know more about history than the average person. It's just the truth. It isn't meant to be insulting.

I just meant that most people have enough of serious think in school or at work, and that they come to games for a certain release. Paradox games especially--and strategy games in general--just don't appeal to that kind of crowd as much simply because they require such concentration.

That's very right. For example, a few times in the past month, when I got back from work, I really felt like playing Victoria but didn't do it in the end because I felt tired and didn't want to concentrate on POPs needs, revolts, wars, income, taxes, etc, etc.
Even if I love it, Victoria isn't the best way to put your feet up and relax !

Darkrenown says in another post that FPS aren't all bad. True ! Actually, I try to alternate the kind of games I play : One strategy or RTS game for a month, then a FPS for a few weeks, then get back to strategy game or role-playing game (Baldur's Gate type), etc, etc.

I'm also playing splinter cell2 and I just finished ninja gaiden (that game is really hard). Pity there's no good RPGs out at the moment :(

Well for one you have a mature audience, combined with a niche market many of whom are fanatical about war and history. That's bound to generate a lot of good posts and useful dialog about the games and the offshoot conversations.

Note that I never said that people who play other kinds of games aren't just as intelligent.
Ok, it just sounded a little too much like it. I've seen it a lot of places: "my game/music/tv/art/clothes/exotic cookery is better than yours, therefore it makes me special because I like it" :p

there's nothing wrong with saying that most people who play this game successfully know more about history than the average person. It's just the truth. It isn't meant to be insulting.
Right but history is not a requisite to enjoy or play the game. I despise Tolkien SciFi and fantasy, but I enjoy some of the games based around those genres.

I'm, sure most of the people here have a better than average knowledge of history, but that's probably what draws them to the game.

Judging from the many posts on this forum, it seems that distribution of Victoria was quite lacking. Even people who were actively searching for it had trouble finding it, which means there would have been relatively few purchases made by people who didn't already know about the game.

there's no doubt that there is truth to this. In N.A. at least, Victoria wasn't distributed in the huge numbers that EU and HOI was.

Also, though, I noticed, that Paradox did one HUGE marketing error with this game. Calling it Victoria. Because it begins with a "V", I noticed that it is shelved in alphabetical order down on the bottom shelf, far from eye-sight of the casual shopper who's not looking for it.

When I first spotted Europa Universalis three years ago, I wasn't looking for it but it caught my eye, due to its placement on the middle shelves. I would never notice Victoria if I wasn't looking for it.
