I've played a few games since 1.07 and yet to see them do much of anything. Maybe it's just my bad luck?
Is Venice active or not?

In one of my first games, I saw Genoa get kicked out of Genoa after it have expanded a bit into southern Italy. It wound up getting Venice and probably made it its primary but by that time, it had bits and pieces of Italy and some other countries. It was pretty cool. Haven't seen an "initial" Venice do anything though.
The Coastal Invasion CB type is very, very powerful. You'll tend to either see Venice and Genoa carve up Italy or be annexed within a few years.
I find that Venice doesn't do much UNLESS some smaller duchies/counties break away on the Adriatic. Then they expand and start gobbling up bigger chunks. Genoa always expands in my games by chewing through the OPM's in southern Italy, but they can lose it pretty fast to Muslims or the ERE too. I just think that Venice is scared to attack the HRE/ERE/Croatia/Apulia for the close by coastal provinces which Genoa has easier access too (meaning, Genoa can stomp all over Napoli or Capua with the Coastal Invasion CB)
Curiously, I've wondered the same thing. I don't think I've seen Venice expand once in all my recent games. Genoa, though, loves to blob all over the place. Italy to Barcelona, anytime someone rebels on the coast, they invade. Maybe the states that Venice would target are just more stable, or larger? Croatia, for example, usually has large duchies rebel on the coast, same with Greece.
Might be in part too, that Genoa has two counties at the start, Venice has one. So, Genoa rates it's chance of success higher, is willing to gamble more. But that'd be a guess on my part.

I've experienced the same. The biggest I've seen Venice is 3 counties which they picked up from rebelling Italian Counts. I've seen Genoa grow very large in a few of my games. Once they took Sardinia, Corsica, Barcelona, the islands off Spain, and a Duchy in Africa before I started warring with them. I'm not sure how they got an entire Duchy. Can Republics holy war?
I've never seen Venice expand. I do however always eat them for my personal demesne sooner or later

I've seen Venice fight Croatia and like the others said, take pieces of Italy. And even if they don't take much for themselves, they usually seem to defend their catholic neighbours from muslims.
Venice can't really expand if the Holy Roman Empire is in good shape, but the minute they lose control of Italy, Venice will start to push out and dominate.
Everyone not pagan (Zoroastrians aren't pagan) can holy war. I've seen Genoa do it several times in my current campaign.
Genoa actually got Barcelona, Mallorca, three Italian duchies and Duklja in my game. After a while they turned Serbian though, and they are now known as the Republic of Duklja xD.
Do all republics get the coastal CB? Has anyone seen novgorod, pisa, ancona etc. expand like this in later start dates?
Yes, all republics get it. I have seen Pisa expand, but usually the republic title gets revoked and than handed out to a feudal count, destroying the republic forever.
