Well it might depend on the size of the galaxy you decide to play with. I don't see how anyone would want to conquer 1000 star systems. But I think the sector system is supposed to help with creating a truly epic sized empire.

I don't see why people are jumping to negative conclusions. Of course galactic conquest of a sort(possibly many sorts) will be possible. It will be difficult though compared to more modest goals. This is a game after all. The challenge is important.

For instance, it will probably be a lot easier to form a federation with other civs that eventually controls the galaxy. Harder than that will be an Empire that uses integration/slaves/robots to conquer the galaxy. Even harder will be a purebred species conquest of everything that annihilates everything else. At least that is what I assume.

Some sort of zerg/tyranid species will simply not be in the game at release(at least not playable). But its a great idea for a dlc.

I might be wrong, but didn't they say at one point that there were no "end-date"? You could contunie playing after winning? Then you can continue eating all the faces of the galaxy.

Listening to some of the videos this week it seems that it the game is designed so that at some point your empire does not get any bigger and becomes fractured by factions.

Now, is this avoidable? I want to play as maybe an all consuming hive mind or a xenophobic militant race who want to purge all races from the galaxy and bring their planets into their empire cult.
One of the reasons I stopped playing CK2 was changes to vassal limits and opinions. I know it is not for everyone, but the reason I love EUIV is because I can take over the entire world and just get stronger. I like to snowball, I like to endlessly expand, I like to be the one big fish in the pond at the end.

If I buy this game will I be able to do it with my playstyle, or will there always be limits on myself expanding past a certain number of systems? I don't want to have to mod the game simply to play a race of insects that are unstoppably eating their way across the galaxy.

Well, the question isn't if it's possible to conquer the Galaxy, the question is; are you able and smart enough to get it done? Nothing is impossible, but somethings are just extremely difficult to acchieve.

If you're question is: Is this a game where this is something I can easely acchieve, then hopefully and most certainly the answer is NO!!!!!

both victory conditions we were revealed so far included conquering and purging everybody else

pretty sure you can conquer all galaxy
honestly why would you not
sure there will be some rebellion risk the further away you are from your capital but did a simple rebellion ever stopped world conquerors before ?
nope
not to mention no time limit makes it perfect for galaxy conquest and purge of all those who dare to oppose you

So if I want to play a race that simply wants to eat the faces of every living thing in the galaxy as part of an all-consuming hive mind then I'll likely not be able to do it in this game and I might suddenly get to 60% of the galaxy and not be able to eat any more? If I have a population that forms into a faction that diverges in the slightest from my militaristic conquerors then I want to purge them, their family, their planet.
I quite like the idea of terraforming everything also, and even if it takes a bazillion resources to terraform Pluto into a thriving jungle planet (resources that would be better spent elsewhere) I'd like to be able to do that eventually.

I feel like the designers have made their decisions about what way they want this game to go and, unfortunately, it doesn't suit my individual playstyle. I'm sure lots of people will have a great amount of fun with this game and it will be very successful for Paradox, but unless I can wipe out every sentient species other than my own in a great purge then it won't be my kind of game.

well every other sci-fi 4x game out there has the snowball fast and hard to conquer all of the galaxy game. if u dont like stellaris then dont play it. I rly will enjoy playing stellaris since i hate all of these things which u like. I finally will be able to play smaller empires and still be effective without the need of endless expansion.

You are incredibly rude, that really is not necessary. I know this is the internet, but there is never reason to disrespect people.

The reason I am saying it is not my kind of game is because of the fact that it even though it is possible to do the conquests there are design decisions there making it not fun. I enjoy conquests being fun. If the philosophy of the games I like to play are "Grow big and smash. Get bigger and smash harder." then it is not the same as "Grow big and smash. Get bigger and become unstable, but continue smashing if you enjoy frustration". That is what I am taking away from peoples comments. Am I truly wrong in reading it that way?
I have read the answers and listened, but you completely fail to see what I enjoy. It is my fault for not explaining correctly, I am sorry.

Like in any other Paradox game, you will almost certainly be able to blob into grotesque proportions. In no single Paradox game did they make it impossible to have a supersized, super stable empire. Will you need to min/max to do this effectively? Why, naturally, yes.

Wait for release and watch lets play. But there is a Vicotry Condtion "Concquer it All" so you shpud be able to do it. But, I wont be easy, because you will have facions on your Empire try to split of. So you will probably fight as many civil wars as you fight enemy until you have conquered it all.

And the..... and Extragalatic Enemy attacks you. One how wants the same then you,.... purge it all.

It is my fault for not explaining correctly, I am sorry.

in taht case... TW series shoud suite you more... Conquest with a lot of fun in Tactics and Strategy. But rahter simple inner Politics (i dont mean this negative, iam a TW Fanboy and played them all. They are just different)

your choice... but 75% of the answears told you taht it will be possible to do waht you wont.....
But they didn't say "it will be easy and you will trounce your way to galaxy domination every time you hit new game without breaking a sweat".
(Not that anyone could say that, even if they wanted to, what with all the not playing the game yet.)

Everyone's definition of fun, and if the OP is not going to get what he wants, not playing is a valid choice.

I have same feeling, too. I asked similar questions in relation to Administrative Sectors - why i'm forced to use them - if i want to have a rather small Empire (like 30 planets versus 100+ Empires everyone are so crazy about) and play something as hive mind with one central mind like Queen or something else that allow you direct control but over strictly limited number of planets. But it turned out there is no way around Administrative Sectors.

For a game that supposed to give a player a lot of different player-styles, actual number of way you can play seems pretty limited (at this point, maybe everything changes with later videos about mid-late games). I hope, i'm wrong about it.

First, it is necessary to make sectors mandatory in order to get around the typical 4x problem. In space 4x's, it becomes tedious to manage a large empire late game. So the solution is automation, but other 4x's have done automation before too, but it's always a problem because it's not optimal. You could micromanage the planets better than you could automate them, so you feel penalized for automating them. Forcing automation is both realistic (you do not directly control whether each planet in the entire galaxy builds a mine or a farm) and necessary to get around this.

Second, you can do what you described with the hive mind thing. Direct democracy right now ups the core worlds limit from 5 to 9. So you could go up to 9 in vanilla. I think you underestimate how large a 30 planet empire is. Habitable worlds aren't in every single sector, so having 30 planets means that your empire would spread across probably 100 star systems, which is 10% of a 1000 star galaxy. 9 habitable planets would be a sizable empire. Also importantly direct democracy's modifier ndicates that the entire thing is moddable.

Especially going off the gameplay video's we've seen so far. In the weekend video, he explored what? 4-5 systems and found nothing even slightly habitable for himself. Admittedly, Quill18 got luckier and found one 2 systems away, but it's still definitely a thing where getting a 50-60 planet empire will not be any stretch be easy without employing either genetic modifications or slave-species.

And the easier you do that, the easier it is to conquer the galaxy. Plus, worse come to worse, you could set yourself an RP thing of, "Only Continental world's are good enough for my continental empire.", only settle the PERFECT worlds, burn the rest, and keep one planet of each race as a zoo.

Actually... that sounds like alot of fun ahah.
