I'm playing it now as a vassal till I get used to all the intregue and castrations, but so far, the muslims and greeks are as powerful as they were before, just depends on how things play out to see who will be the one running amok.

The faction system, in theory, should limit the power of huge blobs though as they have to go back and stop rebellions every so often.

If the AI was a liiiitle bit smarter, the faction system wouldn't stop it from blobbing. The solution is just way too easy - decentralize -> I started as Byz and after the initial war I just made all the kingdoms I could and gave them all away and kept only Thrake for me. After 100 years it got kind of boring so I stopped (for now) but for those 100 years after the decentralization I had exactly 0 factions. None. Nada.

On the other hand the kings in my realm we're constantly getting into wars with rebels .. which I guess stopped them from rebelling against me.

Not exactly. They never go outside of the middle east or north Africa and they win vs crusaders simply because they do better.

There are plenty of instances of them taking over Byzantium, spain and italy, before tearing france into bits.

Edit; with 1.06, haven't seen too much of it yet with 1.07.

Fatimids are relatively easy to hold back as the emperor with certain tactics. After several failed invasions they are too busy fighting among themselves. I don't use mods that tweak Muslims either (I feel they nerf too much).

As a ruler ( i managed to get emperor pretty quickly), the faction system is pretty challenging. Rebel vassals can be pretty scray now on paper

The only problem is that they don't merge their armies together, so if you just manage to have one large stack, you can just pick one small stack at a time, even if they outnumber you 10 to 1 in theory, and win that way. If this get fixed, and they work together, we will have a very good system to prevent crown authority to go too high, and some nice little revolutions.

Oh, and the HRE managed to take half africa, leaving the other half to france again, so muslims are definitly not super imba.

I've only played one game So far. (I played in Ireland)

William the Conqueror won England and Somehow Usurped/was Elected KING OF FRANCE(1084).I'm not noticing any problems with factions in England/France.

HRE has been busy with Faction Independence Wars it wins most of them but that has slowed War against Pagans.

Fatimids are still a Big Blob. A Decadence Revolt just changed Dynasty's. Also won then lost Southern Italy.(To Pope)

Seljuks imploded early and are slowly being eaten by the Fatimids.

Byzies survived Seljuks and have eaten Croatia.

The year is 1117. I don't think it is too imbalanced.Just needs some tweaking.

I think the Byzies are probably a little OP, but we all know what BYZANTINE FANBOYS Paradox are.

I love most of the changes and additions in this patch, but I hate the new Byzantium CB. My preference is to start in the non-byzantine Balkan area, Hungary or Italy and this change has sucked the fun out of it. I just couldn't avoid getting steamrolled early in the game by Byzantium.

But I realize that I am just one player and the game isn't catered to me. A lot of people wanted a stronger Byzantine Empire. I will be using mods that cancel the CB as they become available.

Project Balance (AKA Balansegang) has already updated their mod for 1.07 and took out the CB, so now I have no complaints.

Certainly also possible in 1.06 ... William just have to plot for forging a claim on France while still a vassal (and since the king is a child he have decent chances of having enough that would help) ... add to that that the claim forged is a strong inheritable claim

In 1084, He became King of France. It was Agnatic Elective Law.I tried to find it in history.......Phillip Capet was still alive as Count of Paris and Orleans.

So, I'm guessing it was a Faction type Claim war.

And it happened after a Faction forced change to Elective Monarchy.

The Byzantine claim is really only on Duke level de jure claims (that also works on Kingdom of Italy)
