Just asking if this is a result we should expect normally. I was sailing with my austrian fleet when got attacked by this massive 23 ottomans (not brit ) transports plus 1st line ship. I thought I had cut them to pieces but then to my surprise ...DEFEAT, I lost 2 ships and retreated.

Must rank among the greatest naval embarrassments! Did they have a spectacular admiral while your fleet was leaderless?

IIRC Austria has no naval commanders, which is a massive "penalty", making it close to impossible to win naval battles.

Yes, this. Even 1-1-1 commander would be much better than none.

No commander no victory, because according to this game having no commander makes your soldiers shoot at each other, and your sailors jump overboard.

I had as the Prussians 2 1st line, 1 2nd line and 3 Frigates with my one Admiral against a leaderless Russian Fleet of 2 Ships of the line, and 6 Transports. I lost because all my damage went to the Transports, and all his went to my Ship of the line. I came out with only my Frigates, and he came out with his Ships of the Line and a couple of transport.

So it appears Transports can "Soak Off" your damage.

Next time try and take some screenshots. It would be nice to know how the naval combat in this game is calculated and why I can't seem to come out of a fight without losing Ships of the Line while all of my Frigates are untouched. This just does not seem correct because screens should be taking the damage first in most case, if I am not mistaken. They are more maneuverable and should be trying to allow the Ships of the Line more time to line up their shots while keeping out of the enemies' line-of-fire as much as possible. Frigates should harass the enemy and formate with the Ships of the Line.

As far as that huge fleeet of Ottoman transports, I have been assuming that most of those are actually galleys rather than transports. I have not actually tried playing the Ottomans or building galleys to confirm this. I suspect that galleys are being tallied as transports rather than as light warships. If this is not the case and the ottomans are really building that many transports, something is seriously wrong with the part of the Ottoman AI in charge of production.

Austria has no hope of building any viable navy. Without even a bad commander, just about anyone else will defeat them.

Also, Austrian national ideas give massive manpower. Just walk to Istanbul if you have to.

This. All fleet they should build: some transports for islands invasions and frigates for sneaking to blockade those islands for assault start.

I had no general because I cannot recruit any admiral as Austria. You can say every justification (beach, no general bonus, few naval ideas) but this still sounds ridicolous to me. How can I take Rodhos and Ciprus with such a debuff in battle. This should be another way to balance power, like making build time much longer for austria if we want to portray that they were unskilled with naval warfare but NO WAY 1st line ships would loose against transports.

I second this "this" :)

I do add a ship of the line here and there just to make sure my couple of transports are not sunk by a lonely enemy ship, but I do not have any illusions about ability of my so-called "navy" to fight any major power's fleets.
