Is this an old event which just got restored, or is it a joke?

Got this ship "Greased Lightning" from an event in 3.3 beta 2, and it feels like an old event which happened back in 1.x or so.

But the name "Greased Lightning" means very fast, and when you compare the event ship's speed to the speed of an equivalent ship I had in the early game:

generic early ship.jpg

... the "Greased Lightning" ship looks kinda pathetic.

Is this because ships got faster since the event was written, or is it supposed to be some kind of dad joke about how the event ship was built wrong on purpose?

Idk if it's just not been updated but it definitely is a classic event. I think I've had Greased Lightnings often enough even a few patches ago.

Never really paid any attention to the quality of event ships though. ALthough the other day I noticed the nanite one can jump drive so that's really handy if you get it early.

I have not seen that anomaly event in a long while. I've gotten the salvaged cruiser and dark wanderer though.

Not a new event, just a very rare one since it can only spawn on a few habitable planets.
No changes to the event in 3.3 as far as I can see.

Keep in mind that what's slow to you must not necessarily be slow to the original owners. It's a corvette, so it's a fast ship in relative terms, and would seem fast for anyone on the tech level to build it.

The name itself may be a reference to the car from the musical Grease.

Some event ships have upgraded scanners and they become very useful in finding other empires and space monsters, the later being important so you don't lose the leader.

I had assumed the speed was a dad joke.

I love the jokes in this game.
And I love that they have them set to be rare enough that you're not bombarded with them in a mood-killing way.

I thought it was a reference to it's best role in attacking starbases. Two plasma weapons and a PD can be quite helpful in shutting down the minor outposts without getting hit, and speed up the overall offensive via not having to go find a starbase to reverse armor/hull attrition.

That's my generic Corvette design, the Greased Lightning ship has two T1 kinetic weapons.

I used to big into plasma, but then I tried out the mining laser and howee is it surprisingly viable. Basically even with tier 2 plasma, at a cheaper tech, and easily right around the time for a destroyer rather than a corvette build. (Or at least was, until power projection was a thing.) Had a fun game where I just had Tiyanki Energy Syphons/Mining laser/PD destroyers, and went surprisingly far into the mid-game before I gave way to Battleship spam.

Not optimal, but no regrets. Mining laser hull damage is sweet.

Yeah when I get those they're solid. But I didn't have them yet in this early game.

And that's a bit of a different topic from the "Greased Lightning" dad-joke.
